Short Biography
Director, Producer with a desire to Advance the American TheaterJohn Gould Rubin is a theatrical producer, director and former actor. He is the Artistic Director of The Private Theatre and former Artistic and Executive Director of LAByrinth Theater Company. He produced the original productions of “Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train” and “Our Lady of 121st Street” for LAByrinth, commercially, at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, at The Donmar Warehouse and on the West End in London. He produced the tour of Stephen Dillane’s one-man “Macbeth” at the Almeida Theater in London, at The Sydney Theater in Australia and in New Zealand. Mr. Rubin directed a startling, site-specific production of Hedda Gabbler in a townhouse for 25 people per performance, and a tittilating production of August Strindberg’s sex-farce, “Playing With Fire, ” in The Box, the notorious high-end burlesque house on the lower East side, just returned from developing a radical production of Peer Gynt at The International Ibsen Festival in Oslo and Ximena Escalante’s revolutionary upending of the Electra story, “Electra Despierta”, in both Spanish and English, at CalArts. He is in development for “The Dexter Gordon project, ” a musical for Broadway about the transition from Swing to BeBop jazz, a one-man show about Dick Gregory, “Turn Me Loose, ” “The Black Mann Act, ” a vaudville rendering of the trial of Jack Johnson and a re-investigation of Brecht’s “Drums in the Night.” This winter he will direct “The Seagull” for the Stella Adler professional Lab.Specialties:theatrical producing both commercial and not-for-profit, Directing and the teaching of Acting, Directing, Producing and Collaboration.
