Obituary
John Everett Campbell, age 78 of Manistique, MI, passed away at his residence on November 9, 2022. He was born in Tuscola, IL on August 10, 1944, the son of Gerald W. “GW” Campbell and Blanche (Florence) Beck. He graduated from Tuscola Community High School in 1962, and then attended the University of Texas.
John worked as a wallpaper hanger for residential and commercial buildings. John spent most of his childhood in Tuscola living on his dad’s farm. In addition to Illinois John spent time living in England, Hawaii, Texas, and Michigan. John came to Manistique, MI in 2019 after spending more than 10 years in Ann Arbor, MI. He was very committed to his faith and was an active participant in churches wherever he lived and often shared his homemade bread with church members. In Manistique he was a member of the Manistique Bible Church of Thompson, MI.
John was a passionate outdoorsman and hunter, although wildlife rarely had a reason to fear him. In college John fell in love with motorcycles and continued to ride them for his entire life. He was a lifelong learner who loved to deep dive into all topics, especially history and guns. He was an avid reader who never needed to find an excuse for a daily nap. John was also very proud of his Scottish heritage and enjoyed sharing information with his children and grandkids. He could often be found sharing a story while walking his grandkids to school, sharing a bowl of ice cream, or playing a game of chess. Family was most important to him and as such he was always sharing family news through letters, emails, and phone calls to keep the far spread family connected.
John is survived by his sons Chris (Mara) Campbell of Graham, WA, Ian (Carolina) Campbell of Mesquite, TX, Scott (Julie) Campbell of Ann Arbor, MI, Matt (Kellie) Campbell of Manistique, MI; stepdaughter Brandie Doherty of San Marcos, TX; brothers Jerry (Sandy) Campbell of Signal Mountain, TN, Jim Campbell of Urbana, IL; sister Jeanne Campbell of Chatham, IL; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents GW Campbell and Blanche Beck, and his sister Jan Tottman.
