When John Elphinstone 8th Lord Elphinstone was born on 28 August 1649, in Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland, his father, Lord Alexander Elphinstone 6th, was 47 and his mother, Lady Lillias Elphinstone, of Stirlingshire, was 35. He married Isobel Maitland about 23 April 1670. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 6 daughters. He died on 24 March 1718, in Elphinstone, Haddingtonshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, at the age of 68.
