John Conroy is an award-winning cinematographer with many years’ experience in all grades of the camera department.
His feature credits include The Sea, directed by Stephen Brown and the award-winning Parked, from director Darragh Byrne. He lensed Rupert Everett’s directorial debut about Oscar Wilde, The Happy Prince, and Idris Elba directorial debut Yardie. More recently, John lensed the heartfelt comedy feature, The Miracle Club, starring Oscar winners Maggie Smith and Kathy Bates, and Oscar nominee Laura Linney, in addition to the John Carney-directed feature Flora and Son, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
For television, he has shot many acclaimed UK series including The Tunnel, Broadchurch, and Luther, for which he was nominated for a BAFTA Award and an Emmy Award for Best Cinematography. John also shot the acclaimed Sky Atlantic series Fortitude, earning another BAFTA craft award nomination. Additional credits include episodes for both seasons 2 and 3 of the Showtime series Penny Dreadful, earning an ASC Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography nomination, and the Sky 1 and Carnival Film & Television series Jamestown, as well as the limited series Trust Me for BBC and Red Production Company. John shot the entire series of The Name of the Rose, starring John Turturro and Rupert Everett, which aired on BBC and Sundance TV, and the second season of the anthology series The Terror: Infamy for AMC, which garnered him a win at the ASC awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography.
Other recent TV credits include Penny Dreadful: City of Angels for Showtime, Modern Love for Amazon, the latest season of Westworld—for which he earned another ASC Award nomination—and Love & Death, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons for HBO Max.
