    Saturday 27th April - talkSPORT

Reshmin Chowdhury presented GameDay Exclusive from the London Stadium alongside Stuart Pearce, then Adrian Durham presented GameDay Live from Old Trafford with Perry Groves at Molineux and Alvin Martin at the John Smith's Stadium, then Jamie O'Hara presented the GameDay Phone-In alongside Gabriel Agbonlahor, then Faye Carruthers presented GameDay Exclusive from Villa Park alongside Micky Gray

Fulham v Crystal Palace - Jim Proudfoot
Manchester United v Burnley - Cameron Pope and Adrian Durham
Newcastle United v Sheffield United - Steve Harmison, with Adam Bridge conducting interviews
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Luton Town - Dave Rowe and Perry Groves
Everton v Brentford - Matt Jones
Aston Villa v Chelsea - Joe Shennan and Micky Gray (8pm commentary), with Declan McCarthy producing

    Championship
Huddersfield Town v Birmingham City - Graham Courtney and Alvin Martin
Millwall v Plymouth Argyle - Jake Robson
Norwich City v Swansea City - Ian Beach
Sheffield Wednesday v West Bromwich Albion - Alan Biggs

    League Two
Colchester United v Crewe Alexandra - Sam Ellard
Crawley Town v Grimsby Town - Alex Crook
Gillingham v Doncaster Rovers - Ian Abrahams
Milton Keynes Dons v Sutton United - Laurence Mora

Commentary and updates on the final day of the League One season aired on talkSPORT 2 while talkSPORT concentrated on West Ham United v Liverpool, though it was good to hear updates on multiple matches from the final day of the League Two season during the Around the Grounds service after 2.35pm, with talkSPORT covering as many fourth tier fixtures as Championship games. It was a rarity to hear Jim Proudfoot reporting on a Saturday afternoon given his usual Premier League TV international feed duties. We heard the usual Saturday schedule from 11am, with the evening's live coverage from Villa Park going out between 7.30-10.30pm.

    talkSPORT 2

Olly Clink presented EFL GameDay Live and GameDay Exclusive from St James' Park, then Charlotte Richardson presented Women's Champions League Live from Stamford Bridge, then Mike Sewell presented EFL GameDay Live from the MKM Stadium

    Premier League
Newcastle United v Sheffield United - Adam Bridge and Simon Grayson (3pm commentary)

    Championship
Hull City v Ipswich Town - Mike Sewell and Neil Redfearn (8pm commentary)

    League One
Barnsley v Northampton Town - Graham Beecroft
Derby County v Carlisle United - Ian Danter and Chris Iwelumo (12.30pm commentary)
Lincoln City v Portsmouth - Geoff Peters
Peterborough United v Bolton Wanderers - Mark Wilson

UEFA Women's Champions League Semi-Final Second Leg
Chelsea v Barcelona - Charlotte Richardson and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk (5.30pm commentary)

talkSPORT 2's resident Newcastle United supporter Olly Clink hosted the first two legs of the station's live football commentary quadruple-header from St James' Park from 12noon, with attention turning to the featured Premier League game at 2.40pm after all of the action from League One had been wrapped up, which included regular updates on three important matches away from Derby.

I didn't manage to catch any of the half hour between Newcastle United v Sheffield United and the Chelsea v Barcelona Women's Champions League game, so I'm not sure how long Clink stayed on for after the final whistle was blown in the North-East, although I do know that commentator Charlotte Richardson anchored the half-time and full-time segments from Stamford Bridge.

The UWCL match didn't go to extra time, meaning the Hull City v Ipswich Town commentary could air in full, with Mike Sewell anchoring proceedings from the MKM Stadium between 7.40-10.10pm prior to 50 minutes of live PGA Tour golf with Will Varney. Great to hear Sewell commentating on what proved to be a very exciting Championship fixture. I've always rated his work covering the EFL elsewhere on the dial in previous seasons and he's been a very welcome addition to the talkSPORT team this term.

    BBC Radio WM

BBC Radio WM Sport with Daz Hale from the John Smith's Stadium (2-6pm) and Tom Marlow from Villa Park (7.45-10.10pm)

    Premier League
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Luton Town - Mike Taylor
Aston Villa v Chelsea - Tom Marlow and Garry Thompson (8pm commentary)

    Championship
Huddersfield Town v Birmingham City - Richard Wilford and Daz Hale (3pm commentary on 95.6FM)
Sheffield Wednesday v West Bromwich Albion - Steve Hermon and Tony Brown (3pm commentary on DAB and Freeview channel 722)

    League Two
AFC Wimbledon v Walsall - Andrew Dawkins and Paul Joannou (3pm commentary on iFollow Walsall)

With Birmingham City's crucial match at Huddersfield Town being the main 3pm commentary on 95.6FM, the West Bromwich Albion commentary was broadcast on both Radio WM's Birmingham and Black Country DAB multiplexes plus its Freeview channel (owing to the belief that the Baggies' fanbase is spread out across both halves of the station's catchment area), meaning there was no commentary on Wolves, while commentary on Walsall's final game of the season was just available on the club's iFollow platform. Squad Goals went out on Radio WM's BBC Sounds feed between 2.55-5pm.

Daz Hale mentioned during the 5pm phone-in hour that BBC Radio WM was going to carry a full-time report on and post-match interviews from Solihull Moors' National League Play-Off Semi-Final at Barnet during the evening's live coverage of Aston Villa v Chelsea, although this wasn't carried during the build-up or at full-time and I didn't hear the half-time segment from Villa Park.

Fair play to 5Live for having reporters at every meaningful game in L1 or L2 unlike the main EFL radio rights holder!

I listened do the L1 Around the Grounds on 5Live and as usual, Mark Chapman was superb

They will probably go for the team that starts Saturday in second place.

Ipswich are home to Huddersfield (who are almost certainly relegated because of the 15 goal swing required).

If Ipswich get at least 1 point on Tuesday against Coventry (who now can't make the play offs) then Portman Road will be the place to be on Saturday, for the likely promotion celebrations.

Leeds v Southampton is an interesting match but could be irrelevant if Leeds start the day in third place.

If they have a second commentary on the app it would be Plymouth v Hull but I'm not sure if they have this option.

This is a cheap shot. talkSPORT simply doesn't have the budget BBC Radio 5 Live has, or the ability to share reporting resources with a television programme in Final Score for obvious reasons. The talkSPORT network has historically sent reporters to 13 matches on a typical Saturday afternoon (although I've noticed that number has been cut to 10 during the second half of the season, which is possibly at least partly related to cost-cutting in the wider News UK group). It had correspondents at 16 non-commentary games yesterday, with commentary teams at a further six matches. That's far more than usual, and not an inconsiderable amount of resources to channel into coverage of the final day of the lower division season for a network of two radio stations.

When it comes to the amount of EFL commentaries produced per season, what talkSPORT has offered since 2017/18 is vastly superior in terms of the pure number of live games covered per term than anything that came before it. I've listened to a lot of talkSPORT 2's live coverage of the three EFL commentaries it has produced this weekend and the coverage has been excellent. I'm looking forward to its coverage of the final week of the Championship regular season and all 15 games from the EFL Play-Offs.

The talkSPORT network's EFL coverage has been one of the biggest positive developments in British sports radio over the past seven years. The amount of energy and enthusiasm it has put into covering a league that previously received frustratingly spotty coverage on national radio has been a massive plus.

SouthCity has summed it up well. talkSPORT management will wait until the outcome of Tuesday's Coventry City v Ipswich Town game is known, and will opt for Ipswich Town v Huddersfield Town if Ipswich gain at least a point and put automatic promotion firmly in their grip. If Ipswich lose on Tuesday, talkSPORT 2 will likely carry Leeds United v Southampton live given United's superior goal difference. But you'll find out shortly after the final whistle in Coventry on Tuesday night.

It's a shame there's a 12.30pm kick-off from the Premier League next Saturday, as it would have been good to hear two different Championship commentaries across the two talkSPORT stations as we have done on the final day of its season in previous years.

I wonder if they are tempted to put some of the extra matches on Talk Radio from next season. Times Radio can cover any major breaking stories and it's only two hours, which would allow them to sell advertising around a third match.

I know this has been discussed before but it's probably relevant again as Talk TV has been downgraded to a radio station from this week. Mark Saggers' Sunday Night Club on Talk Radio (which seems to be continuing) is sports content which you would normally expect to be on one of the talkSPORT stations.

I think those were all the reporters that were reporting for both 5 Live and Final Score on Saturday, the League One reporters just with post-match reports on Final Score of course, plus as well Vicki Sparks also provided team news into Final Score before their commentary at Chelsea (much as the 5 Live commentators often do for the 5.30 Premier League match).

I wouldn't say it was a cheap shot. I would absolutely say it was worth pointing out that 5 Live were offering comprehensive coverage despite not having EFL rights, there are always loads of complaints online when the Beeb don't do a Final Score on BBC1/2 when the Premier League isn't playing, but it's worth emphasising that they do plenty of coverage of the EFL via 5 Live and even when there isn't a Final Score on linear TV they quite frequently simulcast 5 Live with the graphics on iPlayer and the red button. I know you can say, so they should because they're public service broadcasters and it's rather expected of them, but I do think they deserve some credit for this service especially when, as was the case yesterday, they had reports from every match that had something riding on it, even ones like Barrow vs Mansfield which were of somewhat limited interest outside Cumbria.

Also as well I know they benefitted from having the resources of local radio and BBC TV they could make use of and people could work across both. But I suppose you can look back to the old days of the ITV Results Service in the 80s and 90s and they would quite frequently take reports from ILR stations. I know we're going back decades, but I always got the impression that one justification for so much consolidation in independent broadcasting in recent years was so the listener would end up with a service to rival the Beeb in its scope. Turns out we don't have that. I know it's not talkSPORT's fault that local radio has been gutted, but the audience doesn't really know that 5 Live could do all this stuff because they were pulling in favours from here, there and everywhere around the Beeb - all they knew what that they were listening to 5 Live and they had loads of reporters. I know talkSPORT are working on tight budgets (though they are owned by a huge multinational corporation) but I would also suggest that the Beeb themselves are pushing resources to the absolute limit and they certainly don't have a lot of the luxuries they had in previous decades.

This isn't to deprecate what talkSPORT were doing yesterday because, as you say, they had more reporters out than an usual Saturday and were at all the matches that mattered in the end. But it's a fact that 5 Live did have more reporters out yesterday, however they got them, and could provide more comprehensive coverage, despite not being rights holders to the competition, and it shouldn't have to be considered a jibe at talkSPORT to say that.

I didn't listen to either station, but you seem to suggest up there that there were no reports on the League One matches on the main talkSPORT station during West Ham vs Liverpool? That seems a bit of an odd one, I know they had full commentary on a League One match on talkSPORT 2, but would it not have been more valuable to listeners and to the EFL if there were reports into the main station as well? It would certainly have given it much more prominence, and listeners tuning in for Premier League commentary will have heard about the EFL as well. I know they have two channels, but most listeners wouldn't be switching between the two. It's not always about the most extensive coverage, but the most accessible coverage.

The problem with this proposal is that, with ten League One matches going on, there would be constant interruptions for goals during a Premier League match where most of the audience for West Ham v Liverpool probably isn't interested.

talkSPORT have designated TS2 as the EFL channel so I think it's fine to put the updates on there. The channel is available to everyone on the phone app or online.

Maybe, but 5 Live did constant updates on other matches during Man U vs Burnley at 3pm, as they do every Saturday. I know that wasn't as important a match, but it wasn't also live on TV as well.

I'm going to prefix this by again saying that @SouthCity has summed things up well in a concise manner, but to expand, it's standard practice for talkSPORT to not carry that many reports from elsewhere during its standalone Premier League commentaries, particularly games that take place at 12.30pm on a Saturday.

The station stopped carrying reports on Saturday 12.30pm kick-offs from the Championship pretty early on in its first season of holding commentary rights to both games in this timeslot - which makes sense, as it can be considered a waste of finite resources to send an extra correspondent to a match that is being covered elsewhere on the network that can be used on sending the same reporter to an additional 3pm fixture during its Around the Grounds service.

When there is a significant non-commentary game being covered in that timeslot (a good example of this would be Old Firm derbies, which sometimes take place on Saturdays at 12.30pm), the extent of the reports coverage of those matches tends to amount to pre-match, half-time and full-time reports plus goal alerts, as opposed to the standard four progress reports per half in addition to the aforementioned updates that you get on fixtures that are featured within an Around the Grounds service.

So I think on Saturday it made sense for the three reporters who were filing updates on League One fixtures away from Derby County v Carlisle United to just provide regular updates into said commentary game on talkSPORT 2, rather than have them giving very brief goal reports and little more into the West Ham United v Liverpool commentary as well. The updates from Barnsley, Lincoln and Peterborough were directly relevant to those listeners who'd made the choice to listen to national coverage of the final day of the League One season, and thus could be carried in more depth there, but they may have been less relevant to the perhaps more casual audience listening to the Premier League commentary.

You mention that BBC Radio 5 Live carries updates from elsewhere during its Saturday 3pm Premier League commentary, but that format (regardless of personnel or style or anything else) is one of the main reasons why I've never found the BBC national radio sports output that appealing on Saturday afternoons. In my experience, the goal alerts/progress reports are really brief, understandably so, so as not to interrupt the live commentary too much and detract from that. I've always found that format of a live commentary broken up by rushed reports to be the worst of both worlds - the information you get from the featured non-commentary games is not detailed enough for my liking, and I can empathise with those listeners who are particularly interested in the commentary game that dislike the frequent updates breaking away from the match that's their main focus. That's not to decry what Radio 5 Live does here, and more power to the people who really like its Saturday 3pm format, each to their own, and I realise the BBC is in a challenging position where it has to offer multiple things to a wide audience, so this is not meant as a criticism. It has a format that works for its audience, it's just that this format has never worked for me, and I suspect this is true for many of the other listeners who have made the conscious choice to listen to football coverage on a different radio station to it on Saturday afternoons.

With that in mind, I can understand why talkSPORT - a station that built (the positive aspects of) its reputation in part by having an Around the Grounds alternative to commentary on Saturday afternoons in the 2000s - would choose to channel the bulk of its reporting resources into that Saturday 3pm window rather than in covering additional games in its commentary windows; puts its Saturday 3pm Premier League commentaries on its secondary station and doesn't insert reports from elsewhere into those live matches; and also takes limited updates from elsewhere during its exclusive standalone commentaries (with the exception of occasions like yesterday, where the featured same-division matches have a more direct relevance to the main live game). It too provides a comprehensive service for its listenership, albeit of a different nature, and arranges its offering in a way that I think is fairly logical when you set out what it does and how it does it.

It depends on what else 5 Extra was being used for at that time (mainly either Super League rugby or cricket) though?

I find it odd that 5Live would do games not involving British sides in the CL in the round of 16 but not at the semi final stage

They have also removed the Villa game from their schedules which is really poor stuff

    Monday 29th April - talkSPORT 2

Hugh Woozencroft presented EFL All Access and EFL GameDay Live with Curtis Davies

    Championship
Preston North End v Leicester City - Mark Wilson and Micky Gray (8pm commentary)

It was the usual Monday schedule when there's a live game, with EFL All Access going out between 6-7pm, then the live coverage airing from 7-10.05pm. Cheltenham Town defender Curtis Davies was just with Hugh Woozencroft for the magazine programme. The Women's Football Show with Lianne Sanderson and Gemma Davison followed EFL GameDay Live between 10.05-11.05pm.

talkSPORT simulcast commentary on the last few minutes of Leicester City's title-clinching victory at Preston North End during the final segment of Kick Off with Danny Kelly, Darren Lewis and Danny Murphy. The rest of this week's live commentaries on the talkSPORT network will be Bayern Munich v Real Madrid (Tue at 8pm on 1), Coventry City v Ipswich Town (Tue at 8pm on 2), Borussia Dortmund v Paris Saint-Germain (Wed at 8pm on 1), Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur (Thu at 7.30pm on 1), Aston Villa v Olympiacos (Thu at 8pm on 2), Barnsley v Bolton Wanderers (Fri at 7.30pm on 2) and Luton Town v Everton (Fri at 8pm on 1).

Sheffield United v Nottingham Forest is talkSPORT 2's Saturday 3pm commentary from the Premier League, with talkSPORT's Saturday 3pm Around the Grounds service continuing despite the absence of EFL and National League fixtures in that timeslot. The second legs of both UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals plus the Olympiacos v Aston Villa second leg will be live on talkSPORT next week, with all eight legs of the League One and League Two Play-Off Semi-Finals set to air on talkSPORT 2. The network's secondary station also has commentary on Sunday's Manchester City v Arsenal (2.15pm) and Chelsea v Bristol City (6.45pm) games from the Women's Super League. It looks like both Championship Play-Off Semi-Final First Leg games will be live on talkSPORT on Sunday 12th May, what with talkSPORT 2 being set to provide commentaries on a Women's Super League rugby league fixture and then the Women's FA Cup Final that afternoon.

Congratulations to Adrian Durham on reaching 25 years at talkSPORT. He made his debut on the original Talk Radio UK on 30th April 1999, around eight months before the station was rebranded as talkSPORT. Adrian's done a lengthy interview about his tenure with Jeff Stelling that's been uploaded to the talkSPORT YouTube channel today. I was interested to hear that before he properly started on the station as a newsreader, his debut on the channel was as an on-the-spot news reporter covering a serious incident that occurred at a pub close to Talk Radio's studios in London's Oxford Street on his first day.

Amazing to think that Durham has been hosting talkSPORT's Saturday afternoon football coverage during all but one season since the 1999/2000 campaign - that one exception being 2006/07, when he was hosting Setanta's TV coverage of various European domestic leagues at weekends, with the late Nigel Pearson replacing him in the chair during its final year under the Football First banner, the last term in which the Saturday presentation and punditry was studio-based. Indeed he's chaired a Saturday Around the Grounds service in all bar three of those seasons, these coming during the 2007/08 to 2009/10 Premier League rights cycle when talkSPORT first won national radio commentary rights to 3pm games from English football's top flight and shifted its Saturday afternoon presentation entirely on-site under the Matchday Live moniker. It's fitting that Durham spoke to Stelling about his career on the station - I remember reading an interview with Adrian many moons ago in which he said that he particularly looked up to Jeff given his work on Soccer Saturday. I think it's fair to say that Durham's longevity as the host of a football scores service on national radio is comparable to Stelling's long run anchoring one on TV.

Tuesday 30th April - talkSPORT and talkSPORT 2

Adrian Durham presented Kick Off: Champions League Live from the Coventry Building Society Arena alongside Adrian Clarke

UEFA Champions League Semi-Final First Leg
Bayern Munich v Real Madrid - Jim Proudfoot and Stuart Pearce (8pm commentary on talkSPORT)

    Championship
Coventry City v Ipswich Town - Ian Danter and Adrian Clarke (8pm commentary on talkSPORT 2), with Geoff Peters reporting for talkSPORT and conducting interviews

This evening's build-up was simulcast across the talkSPORT network between 7-7.45pm, with Adrian Durham handing over to the commentary team alongside him at the CBS Arena to end the simulcast with 15 minutes to go before kick-off in both of the night's live games. Ian Danter anchored the immediate pre-match and half-time segments on talkSPORT 2, and also navigated through said station's sponsored betting update at 7.25pm while Durham was handling the primary channel's one before the network came back together at 7.30pm. As well as being talkSPORT's match reporter, we heard Geoff Peters talking to Ipswich fans outside the CBS Arena during the build-up and he also conducted the post-match interviews from the ground.

With there being 11 minutes of second half stoppage time in Coventry, talkSPORT simulcast the conclusion of the Coventry City v Ipswich Town commentary once the final whistle had been blown in the night's Champions League match, picking the Championship fixture up three minutes past the 90-minute mark. Durham closed out the coverage on both talkSPORT stations at 10.10pm. It's not yet been confirmed which Championship game talkSPORT 2 will be doing commentary on this Saturday at the time of writing.

Wonder if Talksport 2's Championship match announcement will come during tomorrow's night UEFA Champions League commentary on Talksport?

Not sure if talkSPORT confirmed this during last night's coverage, but it was mentioned during tonight's live coverage that, as expected, Ipswich Town v Huddersfield Town will be talkSPORT 2's live commentary on the final day of the Championship season.
