Jessie Wilcox Smith fue una de las ilustradoras más prominentes en los Estados Unidos durante la época dorada de la ilustración. Nacida en 1863 primero se dedico a la enseñanza infantil, para después, cuando ya se notaron sus dotes artísticos, paso a estudiar ilustración, a la que se dedico durante toda su vida.

Ilustraba historias y cuentos, pero también hizo trabajos publicitarios para importantes empresas de su época. Gozaba de mucha fama dentro de ese mundo.

El estilo de Smith cambió drásticamente a lo largo de su vida. Al comienzo de su carrera utilizó bordes oscuros para delinear objetos brillantes y personas en un estilo descrito como "japonés". En trabajos posteriores suavizó líneas y colores hasta que casi desaparecieron. Smith trabajó con diferentes recursos: óleo, acuarela, crayones, gouache, carbonilla, cualquier cosa que le diera el efecto deseado. A menudo mezclaba óleos y carbonilla en un papel cuyo grano o textura eran una importante adición al trabajo. Su uso del color estuvo influido por los impresionistas franceses.

Jessie Wilcox Smith

Jessie Wilcox Smith was one of the most prominent illustrators in the United States during the golden age of illustration. Born in 1863, she dedicated herself to early childhood education, and later, when her artistic gifts were noticed, she went on to study illustration, to which she dedicated herself throughout her life.

She illustrated stories and fairy tales, but also did advertising for important companies of her time. She enjoyed a lot of fame within that world.

Smith's style changed dramatically throughout her life. At the beginning of her career she used dark borders to delineate bright objects and people in a style described as "Japanese." In later works she softened lines and colors until they almost disappeared. Smith worked with different resources: oil, watercolor, crayons, gouache, charcoal, whatever gave it the desired effect. She often mixed oils and charcoal on a paper whose grain or texture was an important addition to the work. Her use of color was influenced by the French Impressionists.
