While earlier, Jennifer abided by the traditional fitness mindset of “no pain, no gain” and pounded her body, she has now become wiser in her workouts. She’s sweating smarter, not harder with age. This mindset change happened after sustaining a back injury in 2021 during the pandemic, and she switched over from cardio-intensive workouts to a new workout modality called Pvolve (short for Personal evolution).

According to the Pvolve website, it’s a “science-led method that combines low-impact functional fitness with resistance-based equipment to deliver results beyond a traditional workout.”

Jennifer tried out the fitness brand at the recommendation of a friend and became a fan of Pvolve’s low-impact functional fitness regime. Now an official partner and ambassador of the brand, Jennifer abides by their workouts to stay active during her busy shooting schedules.

But, what is functional fitness?

For the unversed, functional fitness training is strength training that readies your body for daily activities like walking, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, twisting, reaching and more. The crux of this kind of training is pretty simple. It involves foundational exercises like planks, squats, curtsy lunges, or glute bridges and requires you to perform them in multiple planes of motion rather than the typical forward/backwards or up/ down you do in the gym with weights.

Jennifer Aniston usually works out four to five days a week

As for Aniston, her workout sessions incorporated tools like resistance bands and sliders to increase the difficulty of the bodyweight movements. In a conversation with Women’s Health, she said she would ideally love four workout days a week, keeping a fifth day for a ‘major hike or walk’ session.

According to Self, Jennifer’s classes at Pvolve focus on all kinds of motions, including front-to-back (standing soccer kicks), side-to-side (alternating side lunges), as well as rotational (stepbacks with rotation). The goal? Building a well-rounded strength, stability, and mobility. These workouts leave the actor filled with ‘strength’ and not ‘fatigue’.

The actor truly believes that you don’t have to put yourself through gruelling one-hour sessions in the gym. Instead, you can make do with 20 or even 10 minutes if you’re making every minute count. She contrasted her current functional movements with workouts like treadmill runs, wherein you mindlessly put yourself in motion without engaging the brain. After all, workouts should stimulate your mind too, right?

Jennifer earlier used to sweat it out for about 45 minutes to one hour, indulging in constant cardio, running, and boot camp. But things have changed now. By doing functional training workouts spanning lesser durations, Jennifer feels better in mind, body and spirit. She also believes that she’s in much better shape than she was in her 20s.

It’s all about longevity

In a conversation with Business Insider, Jennifer’s Pvolve trainer said that their favourite thing about her is that she never shies away from a challenging workout. Having said that, they clarified that one shouldn’t ‘confuse challenging workouts with painful routines’. According to them, it’s all about ‘sustainability as well as longevity’.

Yoga and spin for the win

Jennifer loves practising yoga, which has blissful effects on your body and mind. In a conversation with Healthista, the actor’s yoga and spin teacher of over fifteen years, Mandy Ingber, also spilt beans on her daily exercises. In her sessions with Jennifer, Mandy included, “30 minutes of spinning, 40 minutes of yoga, incorporating some of my ‘hybrid’ yoga poses paired with a toning exercise”.  They would also indulge in some power yoga, vinyasa flow, yin and yang stretching and round it up with an infrared sauna.

Pilates

In another interview, The Good Girl actor stated that she ‘definitely incorporates Pilates’ in her routine. Pilates has long been popularised by celebrities for its long, lean, and sculpted aesthetic.  Anyone can do Pilates regardless of gender, age, race, size, ability, or current fitness level. Why? Because it boosts overall muscular balance and improves strength and flexibility.

Pvolve workouts

The USP of Pvolve workouts, as per Jennifer, is that no two sessions are the same. From lower-impact stretch and physical therapy-inspired options to progressive weight training as well as heart-pumping cardio burn – Jennifer’s personal training sessions are all things fun.

Barre classes to boxing

In a previous interview with Instyle, Jennifer spoke about trying her hand at barre classes and boxing. “There’s something about the mental aspect of boxing — the drills, your brain has to work, you’re not just sitting on a bike,” she shared”. She added that boxing is a great way to release your aggression, removing all the ‘crap you’re taking into your ears every day’. While boxing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it’s a great stress reliever. Especially after a hard day when you just feel like punching something (or someone).

Secondly, barre is a toning, body-weight-lifting workout that’s great for toning and sculpting your muscles. Barre engages muscles that you wouldn’t normally target, the ones deep inside your body that exercises like lunges, squats or sit-ups can’t reach. If your goal is to work on head-to-toe toning, muscular strength, and endurance, try Barre.

If Jen’s current functional fitness workout doesn’t float your boat, let’s familiarise you with another simple 15-15-15 workout she recently went back to during COVID-19 after sustaining an injury. In a conversation with InStyle, she spilt details about this workout, which includes a straightforward 15 minutes on a bike, followed by 15 minutes on a cross trainer and finally, 15 minutes on a treadmill.

While if you look at it, it’s simple 45 minutes of cardio. However, if you split it into different kinds as the actor has, it makes things more interesting.

The workout is low impact for the first 30 minutes, which a lot of women in Jennifer’s age group would prefer. Moreover, the treadmill or running portion of this workout can be hugely beneficial for increasing bone density, which reduces as you inch towards menopause.

However, if you’re someone who prefers a low-impact cardio workout, then just remove the treadmill part and stick to the bike and cross trainer.
