Watch Timothée Chalamet Singing As Bob Dylan In James Mangold’s ‘A Complete Unknown’

Filmmaker James Mangold (“Ford V. Ferrari,” “Logan”) is seemingly working at a furious pace. Less than a year after releasing “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” he’s already shooting his next movie, the Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” Timothée Chalamet. While we’ve seen a brief teaser image and lots of set photos, now brand new footage of Chalamet singing while on the set of the upcoming music-fueled filmhas emerged online and can be viewed below.

On April 15, Chalamet was spotted in New Jersey filming a scene for the film alongside actress Monica Barbaro (“Top Gun: Maverick“) who plays iconic folk singer Joan Baez, one of Dylan’s early romantic partners and collaborators.

In the video, Barbaro and Chalamet can be heard strumming their guitars and singing into a microphone before he plays the harmonica; a duet on the classic Dylan song, “Girl from the North Country.” This footage comes just one month after the actor was initially spotted dressing as the well-known singer for the film.

The biopic, currently titled “A Complete Unknown” (after lyrics in Dylan’s song “Like A Rolling Stone”), will also star Benedict Cumberbatch, Elle Fanning, Nick Offerman and Edward Norton as folk icon Pete Seger.

The film will examine Dylan’s switch to the electric guitar in the 1960s, his ascent to stardom, and his eventual ascent to the role of folk-rock industry hero, though Mangold has said in the past it was more Robert Altman-esque and not a traditional biopic.

Director James Mangold had previously revealed that Chalamet would do his own singing in “A Complete Unknown,” and clearly he meant it. The “Dune: Part Two” star previously showcased his vocal chops in the musical film “Wonka, which was released last December to critical and commercial acclaim.

Speaking to Collider last year, Mangold said: “It’s such an amazing time in American culture, and the story of Bob’s — a young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with two dollars in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years.”

“First being embraced into a family of folk music in New York and of course kind of outrunning him at a certain point as his star rises so beyond belief,” he continued. It’s such an interesting true story and about such an interesting moment in the American scene.”

Mangold has seemingly two pressing films to make next following “A Complete Unknown,” one of them being a “Star Wars” prequel tentatively called “Dawn Of The Jedi, another, a “Swamp Thing” horror/supernatural superhero movie for James Gunn’s DC Studios. “A Complete Unknown” has no release date, but is currently not expected to arrive until TBD 2025.
