Blockbusters: The Very Best of Chinn & Chapman - A 50th Anniversary Celebration [2024] (2 x CDs)

Celebrating 50 years since this fantastic album of Chinnichap smash hits was released, here is my expanded 2CD edition featuring 45 of the very best songs by this brilliant songwriting duo.

Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman are the 1974 winners of the Ivor Novello Songwriters Of The Year award presented by the Performing Rights Society. They were also runners-up for the Best Beat Song award, with the title song on this album, Blockbuster.

Since the two writers met in 1970 they have guaranteed chart security to the Sweet since 1971, Mud since 1972 and Suzi Quatro since May of 1973. The origin of the distinctive Chinnichap sound is not easy to trace without inside knowledge, but it derives mainly from a simple, catchy riff and biting lead line, filled out by sound effects designed to create a live atmosphere on the recora. "Come on boys" shouts Suzi Quatro on Devil Gate Drive, "One more time" rally Mud on The Cat Crept In and Blockbuster cries out for that siren.

By moving on to the production side, Chinnichap are able to follow these original ideas through to a finished recording. They would be the first to praise others on the production, such as engineer Pete Coleman, and the partnership too does not bow to anything below perfection. It would be easy to settle for just one bad line in what for all else is a good song, but Chinnichap do not succumb to this. It is such disregard for the second-rate that has evolved so many hits in such a short space of time. It shows also just how much contribution the song makes in pushing an artist to the top, and it is because these numbers can stand up so well on their own that this tribute to the writing and flair of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman has been made.

Nicholas Barry Chinn (born 16 May 1945 is an English-American songwriter and record producer. Together with Mike Chapman he had a long string of hit singles in the US and UK in the 1970s and early 1980s, including several international number-one records. The duo wrote hits for the Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Mud, New World, Arrows, Racey, Smokie, Tina Turner, Huey Lewis and the News, Exile and Toni Basil.

Michael Donald Chapman OAM (born 13 April 1947) is an Australian record producer and songwriter who was a major force in the British pop music industry in the 1970s. He created a string of hit singles for artists including The Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Smokie, Mud and Racey with business partner Nicky Chinn, creating a sound that became identified with the "Chinnichap" brand. He later produced breakthrough albums for Blondie and The Knack. Chapman received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2014 Australia Day Honours.

Chinn was born in London to an affluent Jewish family that owned a string of service stations and car sales distributorships. As a young man his talent for writing successful pop songs was obvious and within a month or two of his first efforts as a songwriter, Chinn co-wrote with Mike d'Abo the two main songs for the hit film, There's a Girl in My Soup (1970).

It was at this point that Chinn met Australian-born Mike Chapman, who was a waiter at a nightclub Chinn frequented, and they decided to team up. Chapman was already a professional musician and songwriter with the band Tangerine Peel, and the two quickly joined up with Mickie Most's RAK label. They began writing songs for a new glam rock band, The Sweet, and their compositions accounted for all the singles the band released in their early years.

Chinn's and Chapman's songwriting style was so successful with British and worldwide audiences that Sweet had an uninterrupted string of million-selling hits in the next few years. These included "Co-Co", "Little Willy", "Wig-Wam Bam", "Block Buster!" "The Ballroom Blitz", "Hell Raiser" and "Teenage Rampage". "The Ballroom Blitz" entered the UK Singles Chart at number two - an unusual feat at the time. "Little Willy" and "The Ballroom Blitz" both went on to be top five hits in America.

Chinn and Chapman stopped working with Sweet in 1975 but achieved equal success worldwide with Suzi Quatro, for whom they wrote many hits. These included "48 Crash" and the No.1 singles "Can the Can" and "Devil Gate Drive". Chinn and Chapman found their next big success with Mud, who had hits with a number of their compositions between 1973 and 1975, including two number ones in "Tiger Feet" and "Lonely This Christmas". Smokie became Chinn and Chapman's next project and they had a number of hit singles with them between 1975 and 1978 including the worldwide hit "Living Next Door to Alice".

In 1978, the two scored their first number one in the United States with Exile's "Kiss You All Over", and Suzi Quatro's duet with Smokie's lead singer Chris Norman, "Stumblin' In", reached number four in the same year. In 1982 "Mickey" by Toni Basil gave the two their second American number one, and in the mid 1980s they had top ten hits with Tina Turner's "Better Be Good to Me", and Huey Lewis's "Heart and Soul".

From 1970 until 1978 Chapman and Chinn scored a run of hit singles. From 1973 to 1974 alone the pair had 19 hits in the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, including five number ones. The pair's dominance of the charts in Britain, Germany, Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand outlasted the decline of Glam rock, and waned in line with the fading fortunes of Smokie and Suzi Quatro.

Chapman exerted a tight grip on the output of the bands whose works he produced, determining the content of all albums. Some resented the level of control: The Sweet, whose interests lay in heavy rock, chafed at the teenybopper material Chapman gave them to perform, finally balking at some songs which did not fit in with their new direction and seeking success on their own; Chapman offered "Some Girls" to Blondie; the song was eventually given to Racey instead. Deborah Harry has referred to Chapman as a dictator, and for the photo shoot for one magazine interview he insisted on dressing up as US wartime General George S. Patton, Jr.

Chapman continued to write hits, including Exile's "Kiss You All Over" (1978) and Toni Basil's "Mickey" (1982, a reworked version of "Kitty", a song they had written for Racey in 1980).

In 2014 Chinn and Chapman got together to work on the musical Blockbuster, which was based around their songs. This was the first time they had spoken to each other in 25 years.

VA - Pop a Paris, Psyche-Rock et Minijupes [2003] (2 x CD's)

POP A PARIS

VA - Pop a Paris, Psyche-Rock et Minijupes [2003] (2 x CD's)

Assembling 35 highlights from the five previous collections in the Pop à Paris series, this two-disc set is one of the most impressive and comprehensive collections of classic French pop ever assembled -- a Eurotrash celebration of sex and drugs presumably fueled by same, at its heady best this music represents the zenith of late-'60s Technicolor grooviness, a mind-bending fusion of sunshine pop, psychedelic soul, and sleazy cabaret. The songs stagger across the tightrope separating Now Sound grooves and blaxploitation funk, complete with fuzz-soaked guitars, deep bass, squawking horns, and thick, swirling organs -- split evenly between international stars and Francophile cult heroes, the collection is not only an excellent introduction to French pop but contains enough rediscoveries and rarities to make it a worthwhile purchase for more cosmopolitan listeners as well. Highlights include Johnny Hallyday's "Mal," Henri Salvador's "Carnaby Street," Les Yper Sound's "Psyche Rock," and Serge Gainsbourg's "L'Anamour." (AllMusic Review by Jason Ankeny)

VA -Looking for the Magic, American Power Pop in the Seventies [2023] (3 x CDs)

POWER POP

VA -Looking for the Magic, American Power Pop in the Seventies [2023] (3 x CDs)

“Various - Looking For The Magic (American Power Pop In The Seventies)” is a captivating journey into the heart of the power pop genre. Released by Grapefruit Records on November 17, 2023, this 3-CD compilation is a treasure trove of rock and pop tunes that defined an era.

Power pop began right about the time that psychedelia turned to meandering jams and the back-to-basics movement took all the poppy fun out of music. Bands who didn't want to travel down either of those paths turned back to the mid-'60s for inspiration, mixing the sunny hooks of the Beatles with the charged-up power of the Who to craft a new and somewhat nostalgic sound. Numerous collections have been released over the years focusing on the style; most of them have focused mainly on the skinny-tie groups that sprang up in the late '70s, when the sound evolved to serve as a more melodic version of punk. Looking for the Magic: American Power Pop in the 70s does a good job tracking the American arm of the power pop movement from the beginnings of power pop and following it as it evolved (a little) and grew up (a bit) throughout the decade. It kicks of with a clutch of songs from pioneers like the MC5, Flamin' Groovies, and Big Star, groups who definitely had all the hooks, energy, and style to get the ball rolling in style. The entire first disc takes place prior to punk, and songs like Blue Ash's hard-rollicking "Abracadabra (Have You Seen Her?)," Milk 'N' Cookies' "Little Lost and Innocent," the Wackers' "It's My Life," and the Raspberries' "Play On" give lie to the commonly held belief that the music scene was a total wasteland before the safety-pin brigade rode in to save the day. Once the landscape changed, power pop continued along next to punk, sometime crossing boundaries but more often sticking to the more melodic side of the street, or instead mixing with AOR (Cheap Trick and Blue Oyster Cult) or soft rock (Andrew Gold). Basically, anything hooky and energetic was fair game, and the set even stretches to include Television’s "See No Evil" and NRBQ's note-perfect "Ridin in My Car." Once the "power pop" sound became more codified, it became a little more predictable -- if still occasionally transcendent -- and the songs here from late 1978 on tend to be more homogenic. Most of the bands took cues from the group that gives the collection its title: The Dwight Twilley Band's "Looking for the Magic" is a cornerstone that piles on reverb, sharpens its hooks to a fine point, and relies on vocal harmonies to send the sound to pop heaven. The Scruffs' "She Say Yea" is another perfect nugget that sounds like Big Star if they had made it to the punk era. The third disc captures power pop as it hit the big time with the Cars and the Knack; ropes in the Ramones; checks in with one of the originators of the sound, Badfinger; and digs up a few should-have-been classics like Segarini's "Gotta Have Pop," the Last's jangling psychedelic pastiche "She Don't Know Why I'm Here," and "She Said" by the improbably named Cheese. The collection does a great job digging up lesser-known tracks that even a serious power pop buff might never have heard as well as hitting all the big names (and not picking obvious songs by them, sticking to deep cuts instead.) It's hard to sum up a movement or a sound or an era in a way that doesn't either come across as too obvious or too obscure for hipness' sake; what the makers of this collection have done is hit right at the sweet spot where education and entertainment meet. They've captured this magical era of music in a way that truly makes it come to life, and when paired with their similarly excellent trio of releases -- Miles Out to Sea, Harmony in My Head, and Kids on the Street -- that examine the British power pop era, comes darn close to being definitive. That being said, there are enough great bands and songs not included to justify a second volume, but until then, anyone looking to revisit or discover some great pop music will find much to love here. (AMG review by Tim Sendra)

The compilation does an excellent job of showcasing the breadth and depth of the genre. It includes a variety of artists, each bringing their unique style and interpretation to the power pop sound. This diversity makes for an engaging and dynamic listening experience.

KIRSTY MACCOLL

Kirsty MacColl - See That Girl (1979 - 2000) [2023] (8 x CDs)

Kirsty Anna MacColl was an English singer-songwriter, born on October 10, 1959, in Croydon, England. She was the daughter of folk singer Ewan MacColl and recorded several pop hits in the 1980s and 1990s. Her first hit as a songwriter was “They Don’t Know” for Tracey Ullman in 1983. Her work combined sharp wit with strong melodies, often incorporating Cuban and Brazilian rhythms. Tragically, she died in a boating accident in Cozumel, Mexico, on December 18, 2000.

Kirsty MacColl’s box set, “See That Girl” (1979-2000), is a tribute to her enduring talent and versatility. Released 23 years after her untimely death, this 8 CD box set celebrates her life and music. MacColl was one of the most talented and versatile singers and songwriters of her generation, with a career spanning from the late 1970s until the early 2000s. Her music ranged from pop, rock, folk, country, Latin, and more. The box set is meticulously curated, bringing 161 tracks showcasing Kirsty as a writer and a performer. The 8 CDs are housed in a 10” 60-page hardback book with notes from Jude Rogers, Arts / Culture journalist for the Sunday Times, The Guardian and Observer collecting interviews with family, friends and collaborators. It includes a mix of hits, album tracks, live recordings and 47 previously unreleased recordings including her second album ‘Real’, recorded in 1983, which was sequenced and ready to go but ended up languishing in a vault but never released. ‘Lullaby For Ezra’, was on this album.

Kirsty released five albums during her lifetime - Desperate Character (Polydor, 1981), Kite (Virgin, 1989), Electric Landlady (Virgin, 1991), Titanic Days (ZTT, 1993) and Tropical Brainstorm (V2, 2000).  The first CD features MacColl’s singles, from her debut, “They Don’t Know” in 1979 to her last “In These Shoes?” released in February 2000. It showcases her knack for catchy melodies, witty lyrics, and expressive vocals. It’s a testament to how fast music was moving at the time that this sounds so different from her debut "Desperate Character". That’s Hans Zimmer on keyboards, well short of his bombastic soundtrack heights, giving “Bad Dreams” a new wave foundation underneath a generally funky beat. It’s interesting to hear her songwriting develop from the ’60s influenced “Keep Your Hands Off My Baby” through “He’s On The Beach” via “Walking Down Madison” to her later ‘world’ influenced tracks such as "Mambo De La Luna". Other highlights include nine tracks from Kirsty’s 1992 Glastonbury performance, a Jazz Cafe set from 1999 and live performances originally recorded for BBC radio and television. The eighth and final CD in this set features a selection of collaborations with other artists, as either singer or songwriter, and illustrates how in-demand and versatile Kirsty’s extraordinary talents were.

It’s baffling how she was not more commercially successful when she was alive.

“See That Girl” is an unbelievable piece of work in itself. It matches some of the tremendous box sets that have been released in the last few years that have endeavored to convey the same sense of occasion and gratitude to the lost and the forever majestic. It’s a set that has thoroughly enjoyed exploring, and it’s expanded appreciation for an artist whose work transcends time.

Whether you’re a long-time fan or just discovering Kirsty’s music, this deluxe set is a journey worth taking. It is a testament to Kirsty MacColl’s enduring legacy. Her music continues to inspire and captivate, and this box set is a fitting tribute to her remarkable talent. B)
