'Ghostbusters' animated series in development at Netflix

June 8 (UPI) -- Netflix is developing a new animated series based on Ghostbusters.

The streaming service confirmed Wednesday that Ghostbusters: Afterlife writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan will reunite on the series from Sony Pictures Animation.

Reitman and Kenan will executive produce the project, with Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., to handle production.

Plot details are being kept under wraps.

The Ghostbusters franchise originated with the 1984 film Ghostbusters, directed by Ivan Reitman and starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis. The movie was followed by the 1989 sequel Ghostbusters II.

Ghostbusters also inspired the animated series The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters, and the 2016 reboot film Ghostbusters. Murray, Aykroyd and other original cast members reunited in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which opened in theaters in November.

Jason Reitman is the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, who died in February.
