Biography

Isabel Ingoldesthorpe (c.1441 – 20 May 1476)

Isabel was the daughter of Sir Edmund Ingoldisthorpe[1] and his wife Joan Tiptoft. She was born in about 1441 at Borough Green, Cambridgeshire.

Isabel married Sir John Neville. [1] The marriage took place on 25 April 1457 at Canterbury Cathedral. The Archbishop, Thomas Bourchier, officiated. At the time of the marriage, aged about 15, she was a royal ward; her father recently deceased.[2] Eight manors were settled on them in jointure. A 1460 petition concerning the marriage noted that The Nevilles state that Isabel was found to be Ingoldisthorpe's daughter and heir. When they requested livery of the estates from the chancellor in Chancery, he refused on the grounds that the king had granted the marriage and wardship to the queen. The Nevilles disputed this as Isabel was 14, and not a minor at common law. John Neville made recognizances in £1,000 to the queen on the understanding that if it was found that such a grant to the queen was not available, then she would not take any money from Neville. The Nevilles are unable to have a day in their law, and the queen has still levied part of the £1,000, and they are forced to sue a special livery at great expense. They request that the recognizances by annulled, and that women of the age of 14 when their ancestors die should have no problem of obtaining livery of their lands and tenements.[2] The petition also named Edmund Yngaldethorp (Ingoldisthorpe), knight, late father of Isabel Neville and Margaret of Anjou, Queen of England.

Twelve months after the death of John Neville, and on the anniversary of their marriage, Isobel married William Norreys, himself a widower with several children. She was his second wife. Norreys had been a staunch Lancastrian, knighted by Henry VI after the battle of Northampton. He fought at Towton and later made his peace with Edward IV. In 1469 he was made Esquire of the Body to Edward IV. Isobel and William Norreys had one child; a son who died in infancy. They were married only four years before she died. Isabel was buried beside her first husband at Bisham Abbey. [3]

On her mother Joan's death in 1494 the Ingoldsthorpe lands were divided between Isabel's five daughters. Burrough Green went to Elizabeth, wife of Thomas, Lord Scrope of Masham, and after her death to Lucy Browne, her niece. [4]

Notes on Barony

By modern doctrine, the Barony of Bradeston devolved on to her and when John Neville was called to Parliament by writ the Barony merged with his honours and was attainted in 1471.

Cokayne prefers the spelling "Ingoldsthorpe", so please change the LNAB. Thanks!
