We're here now - a hard sci-fi film directed by Christopher Nolan. This is the first time in years since Nolan worked with a studio other than Warner Brothers, which DID work on it, but this time, Paramount also worked on it together with the former distributing the film in international territories and the latter distributing the film in the United States (or North America in general). The result was a pretty polarizing film that was loved by a lot of critics but absolutely hated by a few number of critics. Nevertheless, the film still became a box office success, grossing well over 4 times its budget worldwide.
And as you might've expected, this film was shot with 15/70mm IMAX cameras with 66 minutes of the film being shot in such way. Not to anyone's surprise, these scenes were expanded to 1.43:1 aspect ratio at maximum in IMAX screens while rest of the film was shot on 35mm film with 2.40:1 aspect ratio (by Blu-ray standards). Of course, this film went through a photochemical process instead of digital intermediate like previous Nolan films. As for me, I didn't have to ask my family to drive to Jordan's Furniture this time since MBTA station was built nearby AMC Assembly Row 12 IMAX, which DOES have 1.90:1 aspect ratio.
This is also notable for being the final Nolan film to be shot on 35mm film as he would end up using 65mm film for all of his subsequent films while also being the first film that he worked with his new cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. Also, it's kind of unfortunate that the film came out on November 2014 because only a month after this film came out, IMAX Laser projector, which is basically a digital IMAX projector that can show films in 1.43:1 aspect ratio and the next IMAX release would be the first to be shown with such projectors. Ironically, that film is also the final film of a certain trilogy that was shot back-to-back.

What do you mean this was part of a trilogy?
I was teasing the next film. I've edited that part to make it clearer.
The Prestige, The Dark Knight and Interstellar are easily my top 3 Nolan movies.
I still haven't seen The Prestige yet and that film won't be discussed here, sadly.
Mate, stop what you're doing right now and watch The Prestige.
Even if I did, I sadly can't discuss it. :(
Please do a re-release Paramount!!!
I would certainly see this in any sort of 1.43:1 format.
The G.O.A.T Even though I saw it xenon (which was at one point of time the biggest imax screen in the world ). It blew me away. The whole experience of the film is unbeatable. We all lucky who managed to see it imax during its original theatrical run.
Thank goodness that an MBTA station was built nearby an IMAX venue that actually had an 1.90:1 IMAX screen.
Hey man fuck the sub, a big screen is a big screen. Something is better than nothing alright.
General Audience love Interstellar though.
IMDb : 8.7 (1.9 mill votes)
Letterboxd : 4.30 (1.4 mill votes)
RT Audience : 86%
Metacritic User : 8.5
I wouldn’t use IMDb ratings as a proof since they can get easily manipulated.
And even if you don’t trust imdb, there’s letterboxd
How trustworthy is Letterboxd?
More trustworthy than Rotten tomatoes
Well, it has more than 1.9 million voters though, so much more credible than a few hundreds critics imo
I wouldn't say it's much more credible. I've read from people that were active during the days of IMDb message boards, that they coordinated to astroturf movies. If I'm not wrong there even used to be an unofficial rivalry between TDK and TSR where each side would target each other's movie.
Don’t say anything, just cry! 😭
Yeah, this one has a reputation of being the most emotional film that Nolan directed.
Saw it opening night at Lincoln square. Everyone was dead silent and even clapped a the end. Best Lincoln square experience I think I've ever had. The docking scene Is maybe my favorite imax scene of all time.
I WISH Lincoln square could screen old IMAX movies but they can't due to the release schedule filling it up.
Yeah, there are just so many IMAX releases happening these days.
I saw it for the first time this year at the London BFI IMAX in 15/70mm. I was not expecting the bang and the loudness gave me the fright of my life. Multiple people in the rows in front also jumped in their seats. It was an incredible experience and I’d go back in a heartbeat.
I saw this in 1570 imax film on release and it was amazing! I wish they would have brought back them back for reshowings over the years. Sad that we'll never get to see these movies in 1570 again.
Interstellar is truly one of its kind when it comes to IMAX releases.
Well in London they’ve been showing it and maybe they’ll do screenings in America next year for the 10 year anniversary. They did 15/70 screenings for the Dark Knight for it’s 10 year anniversary in 2018.
Wow that's awesome. I'm near Edmonton, Alberta, Canada so I've never seen any reshowings of 15/70 up here.
Ahh that sucks. I’m lucky enough to live in LA so I’m able to see all of Nolan’s films in 15/70 but I wish I could travel to London cause they’ve been playing all his films at the BFI IMAX in the lead up to Oppenheimer. Maybe one day you’ll be able to travel to New York or LA for a screening!
We have the 15/70 up here, so I've seen them all since The Dark Knight in that, just that they never seem to do reshowings up here I meant.
Can’t believe some of us Delhi folks will get to experience it in IMAX again. Sad that India has only Digital IMAX but for me 28th May can’t come soon enough!
Wow. Nice.
That one time when I wore a NASA astronaut themed outfit during the film's opening weekend... good times.
Maybe you should've done that again in 2015. 😉😁
What a wonderful IMAX presentation this was. Some of those scenes of the ship flying past Jupiter in complete silence on the massive screen made you feel as if you were there.
And the emotional punch of Cooper driving away from the farm with Murph running after him… That hit right in the chest and heart.
Shame that IMAX with Laser didn't exist at the time. :(
Honestly would love to see this on an IMAX 70mm/Dual Laser screen. Never seen it but seeing those clips from the space scenes make me imagine what it would look like.
I know, right?
