Obituary: Donald C. McLoughlin | Weekly Express News

Donald C. McLoughlin, age 95 of Rome NY and Eagle Bay, NY passed away peacefully on April 8 at Rome Health after a long illness.

Don was born in Utica on November 2, 1928, to H. Gray & Jane (Davies) McLoughlin. After moving to Rome and graduating from Rome Free Academy, he enlisted in the US Navy serving on the USS Robinson during the end of WWII. After his discharge he attended Utica College where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree. He spent 10 years as a reporter for the Utica Gannett newspapers. Don then began his 28-year career with Canterbury Press, retiring as CEO in 1990. Don worked closely with his father, H. Gray McLoughlin, and then later his son Robert for the family business, McLoughlin Motors.

Don was united in marriage to Patricia (Pat) A. Kahler on June 18,1955 in Utica, NY.  They were married for 43 years until her passing in 1998.

Don was highly active in his community through several civic roles, some of which were, Director of NYS Jaycees, sitting on various boards including Rome Memorial Hospital Board, Rome Housing Authority, Utica College Foundation, Rome Industrial Development Corporation, Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church, OnBank, Oneida County BOCES Board and Rome Savings Bank.  Don held the elected position of 6th Ward Alderman for two terms and the Rome Board of Education for 5 years, serving the last two as President.

Don and Pat enjoyed their family time and their retirement. They were avid golfers and an active member of both Thendara CC and Deltona Hill CC. They split their time between Log Lodge in Eagle Bay, NY and their home in Deltona, FL, always welcoming family and friends for visits.

Don is survived by two sons, Robert (Susan) McLoughlin, David (Leslie) McLoughlin; three daughters, Cynthia (Chris) Grey, Suzanne (Shaun) Downey and Wendy (James) LaLonde; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces; and 1 nephew.

He was predeceased by both parents, his wife Pat, a grandson (Christopher Bathke), a great-grandson Jude, his brother, James, and his sister-in-law Ernie Lou.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of the 3rd floor at Rome Health for their excellent care and compassion to Don during his time there.

Calling hours will be at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Ind., 418 N. George St., Rome on April 12 from 4 to 7 p.m.  There will be an 11 a.m. Service will be at the Funeral Home on Saturday April 13.  Burial will be at Rome Cemetery.
