Product Description
Many movies strive to capture the confused, yearning spirit of The Graduate or The Catcher in the Rye; Igby Goes Down succeeds. Igby (Kieran Culkin) is a teen struggling to find any purpose or meaning to his life; surrounding him are his tyrant mother Mimi (Susan Sarandon), schizophrenic father Jason (Bill Pullman), wealthy and deceitful godfather D.H. (Jeff Goldblum), and cold brother Oliver (Ryan Phillippe)--all of whom have their own problems. While evading being sent to yet another boarding school, Igby seeks solace with two women: Rachel (Amanda Peet), a drug-addicted dancer who's D.H.'s mistress, and Sookie (Claire Danes), a college student who becomes perhaps his only friend. Culkin carries the film, ably supported by the superb cast; script, direction, and performances are razor sharp. Igby Goes Down doesn't let anyone--including Igby--off the hook for their cruelty, hypocrisy, or lack of empathy. --Bret Fetzer

IGBY IS STRUGGLING WITH VARIOUS BOARDING SCHOOLS...STRUGGLING AS IN GOOFING OFF, AND HAS BEEN SHOWN THE DOOR TO MOST. HIS MOTHER FINALLY DECIDES ON A MILITARY SCHOOL TO SHAPE HIM UP, BUT HE DODGES THAT AS WELL, ENDS UP IN THE CITY (A LA HOLDEN CAULFIELD) TRYING TO FIGURE LIFE OUT. SOME SAD FAMILY DRAMA FOLLOWS, BUT IN THE END IGBY WILL BE OK!!!
A fascinating portrait of a horrifyingly amoral, soulless society, which characters whom you can't help despising. No one ever feels anything. Even godfather Jeff Goldblum, who offers pats on the back and summer job one moment and beats Igby to a pulp the next, feels neither love nor hate. It would get five stars, but the heteronormativity is extremely offensive.

Unfortunately the film itself did, at least for me, not live up expectations. I usually quite like black comedy and can laugh about dysfunctional families, but I found the characters in this film singularly unlikable and could not relate to any of them. This is entirely down to personal taste, but I found several of the jokes so distasteful as to make it impossible to enjoy the film as a whole. The opening scene with the two boys putting a plastic bag over their sleeping mother's head to suffocate her in her sleep put me off completely, and nothing that followed changed my feelings about the film. Which is a pity, because the cast is great with Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Susan Sarandon, Claire Danes and Jared Harris. Young lead actor Kieran Culkin acts his socks off as Igby. As far as acting goes, he is absolutely wonderful. I was disappointed with the story and the way it was told, but others seem to have enjoyed the film. And I'm glad somebody did. For the sake of the actors who all deliver solid performances.
