“shiny sheff” remembered in city service As National remembrance takes place across the country, Sheffield will come together on Sunday 1 May to mark the 40th Anniversary of HMS Sheffield with a commemorative service and parade. Forty years ago, on 4 May 1982 HMS Sheffield, the Royal Navy warship named after our city, was struck by an Argentine missile, and later sunk on 10 May, during the Falklands war. Of the 268 crew many were taken to safety but 20 were killed and more injured. The ship was the first British warship to be lost in 37 years, and the first of four lost during the Falklands conflict. The shipwreck is a

protected war grave. People in Sheffield are invited to join in remembrance at the Cenotaph in Barker’s Pool where Sheffield Sea Cadets will take part in a parade at 9.30am. The Lord Lieutenant and Lord Mayor of Sheffield will be taking the salute accompanied by other senior dignitaries. A wreath laying and short ceremony will then take place at the HMS Memorial at Sheffield Cathedral. Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Gail Smith, said: “We invite all of Sheffield to join as we commemorate the 40th Anniversary of this significant event in our City’s and our Country’s history. As well as losing

our prestigious warship, many lives were lost during the conflict in the Falklands and we mustn’t forget the sacrifices made by those who fought, and all those who still do today, to protect our freedom. It is an honour for me to take the salute on behalf of Sheffield, on this very important day of remembrance.” As well as the parade and service in Sheffield a new memorial is being unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum on Wednesday 4 May. The HMS Sheffield Association Committee commissioned the memorial to celebrate the service of those who served in the

3 ships (Cruiser, Destroyer and Frigate) that bore the name of HMS Sheffield. It is also intended that the memorial acts as a place of remembrance for the 20 members of the Ship’s Company lost in action whilst serving on the Destroyer in 1982 during the Falklands Conflict. In November 2018 it was announced that a new war-

ship would be named HMS Sheffield. One of eight antisubmarine vessels to be built, it will be the fourth HMS Sheffield to serve the Royal Navy. The new HMS Sheffield has been commissioned and will be built in the second phase of construction of the new warships.

leadmill launches online petition against closure The Leadmill have organised an official E-Petition and are now reaching out to the citizens of Sheffield and beyond, as well as friends and colleagues in the music industry, to show their support in any way that they can. The E-Petition is fighting to prevent Landlords unfairly and unjustly evicting long standing tenants for their own financial gain. In circumstances where a tenant has invested a huge quantity of money, time and effort in establishing

themselves, has paid rent on time (even throughout Covid19 Lockdowns) and has improved the fabric of the premises beyond recognition, it is inconceivable that the Landlord should be able to evict and inherit the investment that the Tenant has made. The Leadmill is a valuable asset to the community and an integral part of the local culture which cannot be destroyed in this way. This petition will also help to protect many other vulnerable businesses across the

country, who lease the buildings in which they operate from. 93% of Grassroots Music Venues do not own the buildings that they operate within and are also at risk. A Leadmill spokesperson has said, ‘this is an appalling attempt to shut down and evict The Leadmill by an unscrupulous Landlord and is likely to continue happening to others unless we can get this changed in law.” Here are some words of support The Leadmill has received for their

#WeCantLoseLeadmill campaign: In order for the Petition to be considered for debate in Parliament, it needs

to reach 100,000 signatures. Please sign and show your support here: https:// petition.parliament. uk/petitions/614202

I took my 8-year old girl to the office with me on, “Take Your Kid to Work Day.” As we walked around the office, she starting crying, so I asked what was wrong with her. As my colleagues gathered round she sobbed: “But daddy where are all the clowns you said you worked with?” My uncle was crushed by a piano.... His funeral was very low key. Did you hear about the cheese factory explosion in France? All that was left was de Brie.

new scam warning get your vehicle ready family business The Local Government Association, which represents councils across England and Wales is warning residents to be aware of new scams and remind themselves of tell-tale signs that you may have been contacted by a scammer. The pandemic saw a sharp increase in scams which included promises of a payment from HMRC to support individuals during the lockdown. However, councils are now warning that criminals are cold calling residents asking for bank details in order for them to receive the Government’s Ј150 energy rebate, with payments being administered by local authorities for all households in council tax bands A to D. Residents are being reminded that councils will not ask for bank details over the phone. All households who pay council tax by direct debit will receive the payment directly into their bank account and anyone who does not pay their council tax by direct debit will be sent a letter with details of how to claim. Anyone who unexpectedly receives a text, email or phone call seeking information or payment should refrain from giving out personal information, including bank details, clicking any links or responding until they can be sure it is genuine. If in doubt, find the correct contact

details online of the organisation claiming to be in contact and check with them directly. Other tell-tale signs that something could be a scam include: • It seems too good to be true – a discount or offer much better than you’d expect • Spelling or grammar errors; strange punctuation and lots of capital letters can be signs that a message is fraudulent. • You’ve been asked to do something quickly or have missed a deadline and could be punished Cllr Mohan Iyengar, Vice-Chair of the LGA’s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, said: “Councils are working hard to ensure eligible residents receive their energy rebate payments as soon as possible, however criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to take advantage of the financial worries people are facing and as a result many of these scams look legitimate on first impression. Anyone can fall victim to a scam, and we urge people of all ages to brush up on the tell-tale signs. If you get sent a message that you believe to be fraudulent, you can report it to your mobile or landline phone provider or by forwarding the message to 7726, a free reporting service. You should also report the scam to Action Fraud to help others avoid falling victim in the future.”

With the UK’s roads set to be extremely busy this Easter. Green Flag, the breakdown provider, expects nearly 22 million people to be hitting the road. Green Flag recommends drivers follow these easy steps when preparing for a long car journey: • Walk around the car and look for signs of potential issues, including flat tyres or lights that need replacing • Have a regular service on your vehicle to ensure your car is at tip top condition for driving and ultimately prolonging the car’s overall life span • Check your tyres, both for tyre pressure (including the spare if you have one) and tyre tread. Tyres do have their own built-in tread wear indicators, but this can also be checked by using a 20 pence coin; if the outer band on the coin is visible when placing the coin in the groove between the treads, it means they’ve worn too low, and the tyres need replacing • Check all fluid levels,

making sure to top up if necessary and carrying water, oil, and screen wash with you just in case • Make sure you have fuel, if you’re driving a petrol or diesel car ensure you have enough fuel to get you to your destination and back, or plan your fuel stops in advance if you’re going on a longer journey that will require you to refuel your vehicle. If you’re driving an electric vehicle, make sure your car is fully charged before you head off, and try and locate charging points on the route so you’re fully prepared for your journey • Make sure your phone battery is topped up prior to your journey and pack a portable charger. In the event of a breakdown, using an in-car phone charger without the engine running can flatten a car battery in a very short space of time • Make sure you have breakdown cover to ensure you’re covered in the event of a breakdown situation.

New market research released today reveals that over half of adults surveyed in Sheffield admit that looking back now they wish they had expressed more gratitude for the efforts of their teachers and the positive impact they were making. When asked about the impact their teachers had on them, acknowledging that their teachers motivated them to push themselves, built their confidence, and guided them through some challenging times, were among the responses from people in Sheffield. The national survey of over 2,000 adults in England was carried out for Get into Teaching -

the national campaign aimed at encouraging people to consider teaching as a career. It explores some of the broader life lessons from people’s school days, as well as some of the lighter moments they remember in class and what they would say to their former teachers now if they could. Roger Pope, spokesperson for the Get Into Teaching campaign said: “I would encourage anyone searching for an exciting, varied and rewarding career – from those who’ll be graduating this summer through to those considering a new career path – to visit the Get Into Teaching website to find out more.”

offers complete funeral service

Eric Eyre Funeral Service understands how difficult the process of planning a funeral for a loved one can be and offer a bespoke funeral service, whilst continuing to uphold traditional values. Established since 1864, Eric took over the business in 1955 and has been looking after families in the local community and surrounding areas of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham ever since, with branches at High Green and Sheffield Lane Top. Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and with decades of experience in guiding bereaved clients through this difficult time, Eric Eyre provide a professional yet personal service, caring for you and your loved ones while facilitating the necessary funeral arrangements and ensuring your wishes are carried out with care and compassion. Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter. That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like and we will do our utmost to meet your requirements.” “ With over 20 years’ experience of the industry, and many years’ previous experience with John Fairest, Wayne was offered the opportunity to join Eric as manager in 2017, “I joined John Fairest

as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years of service I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is Sharon Clayton and Kay Cooper, while Beverley Travis and Ruth Fenlon look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

leopold square live re-opens! opera performs in memory of judy With the pandemic having put a stop to Leopold Square’s full summer of live music programme for the past two years, the city centre venue is delighted to be bringing it back between May and September this year. An eclectic line-up of talented musicians playing soulful vibes, smooth jazz, swinging classics, and much more, will be performing between 2pm and 4.30pm every Saturday and Sunday. This year Leopold Square is adding Friday evenings in July and August when live music will ease guests into the weekend between 5pm and 7pm. A special Big Swing Event will be kicking off the summer programme on Sunday 1st May. There

will be a DJ and swing dance class from 1pm, before the Ryan Taylor Organ Trio bring their riproaring and riotous jazz, swing and Latin grooves to get the live music going at 2pm. Another dance class takes place at 2.45pm and the band comes back for a final set at 3.15pm. The Big Swing Event ends at 4pm, but the live entertainment doesn’t end there, as Cubana’s ever-popular Salsa in the Square takes over from 5pm. The following weekend, one of Sheffield’s longest running groove bands Montuno will be bringing their groove-driven Latin, funk and Nuyorican soul on Saturday 7th May. Jenny Smith is one of the slickest and most polished vocal

performers in the North and will be entertaining visitors on Sunday 8th May. On Saturday 14th May, Sticky Pockets will be making their debut at Leopold Square. The 5-piece band bring Southern blues, Northern soul and a bit of everything in-between. Visitors will then be able to get their dancing shoes on when the everpopular What Katie Did Next are welcomed on Sunday 15th May. Dizzy Club will be getting visitors dancing on The Square’s terraces on Saturday 21st May, before The Washboard Resonators bring fresh energy to the sounds of the 1920s on Sunday 22nd May. The final weekend in May sees the Nicola Farnon

Quartet performing on Saturday 28th May, and Emily Claire West is bringing her effervescent energy and beautiful soulful voice on Sunday 29th. Miriam Duffy from Leopold Square commented: “Whilst we were able to have a shortened programme of live music last year, there hasn’t been a full schedule since 2019, so we are thrilled to be bringing it back. Visitors will be able to enjoy performances from some of the most talented musicians around - lovers of jazz, soul, Motown, funk and swing music are definitely in for a treat. We look forward to welcoming people along.”

A Major revival of classic Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera Patience which comes to Sheffield this May will be raising money in memory of Yorkshire G&S performer and keen St Luke’s Hospice supporter, Judy Savournin. Charles Court Opera, the professional company which tours productions of the G&S operettas across the UK, is directed by Judy’s son John Savournin. He is bringing the company’s revival of Patience - the classic satire of fads and fashion - to Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre on Sunday, May 22 at 3.30pm. John, who recently played Captain Corcoran in HMS Pinafore for English National Opera, will lead the cast.

The show is being dedicated to Judy, who was well known as one of South Yorkshire’s most popular Gilbert and Sullivan performers, appearing for City Comic Opera Society, Woodseats Operatic Society, Opera 14, Intake Methodist Musical Society, South Yorkshire Opera and Dore Gilbert & Sullivan Society in mezzo and contralto roles. Judy was actually in rehearsal to play Lady Jane in Dore’s version of Patience when Covid lockdowns began in 2020 and the production had to be abandoned. She was also a volunteer bereavement counsellor for St Luke’s Hospice and it is in recognition of that support that a donation from ticket sale proceeds will go to the charity,

which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. Charles Court Opera will also sponsor a seat at The Montgomery in Judy’s name. “Lady Jane in Patience was mum’s absolute favourite role and she was so excited to be rehearsing it with Dore, though the production never had the chance to go ahead,” said John. “Mum performed over

many decades at The Monty with City Comic and Dore G&S, and it is a theatre which she had great affection for. It holds many happy memories for us all, so we thought this was the perfect setting in which to remember and celebrate her.” For tickets or for further information visit themontgomery.org.uk

A very unhappy easter for blades owls win away United slipped to a dramatic last-gasp defeat against Reading, having looked to have done enough to snatch a late point on Good Friday. Iliman Ndiaye slotted home at the Kop end on 90 minutes, but Tom McIntyre snatched it for Reading from the subsequent restart to consign Paul Heckingbottom to a first home defeat since his appointment in November. The manager made two changes to visit the Royals, with Osborn and Hourihane recalled in place of Fleck and Berge, with the former missing out with a groin niggle. Basham returned amongst the substitutes. It was a typically positive start from United, as Norwood fired over inside the opening minute, but Gibbs-White was then cautioned for accident yet dangerous challenge on Ejaria and on 17 minutes, things took a further turn for the worse as JOAO got the better of Davies and

Stevens and fired into the net from Laurent’s pass to give the visitors the lead. Reading had further chances, with Ince testing Foderingham, Laurent, after being booked, firing into the side netting and most dangerously Joao rolling an effort against the post on 33 minutes. In response, Baldock was denied by McIntyre, prior to United winning a couple of corners and Hourihane’s delivery was inviting but went unrewarded. Right on half-time, Osborn got to the byline, the away side repelled his low cross before snuffing out Baldock at the back post. The Blades made a change at half-time as Berge replaced Uremović, prompting a reshuffle of the pack. Yiadom was booked for a cynical pull on Gibbs-White, before McBurnie limped out of the action and was replaced by Jebbsion. Referee Ward wasn’t afraid to use his yellow card with Baldock carded, as United struggled to create any chances.

On 70 minutes, Ndiaye replaced Hourihane, but as United looked for a way back into the game both he and Jebbison were booked as Rahman and Morrison made the most of a couple of challenges. The clock was against the Blades, but suddenly the chances came, Jebbison headed over from Osborn’s cross, before Egan was denied by Nyland from Norwood’s delivery. But seconds before the end of the 90, United restored parity as NDIAYE produced a composed finish after a lay-off by Egan from Jebbison’s flick on to seemingly rescue a share of the spoils, but Reading had other ideas and after Morrison beat Davies in the high from a free-kick, MCINTYRE was afforded too much space and slotted past Foderingham to condemn the Blades to defeat, despite Davies having a late header from Norwood’s corner. United remain firmly in the play-off mix, despite only leaving the west country with a point. Chris Martin put the hosts ahead firmly against the run of play early in the second half, but Morgan Gibbs-White levelled to secure a point, but in truth the Blades will frustrated not to have claimed all three. United made five changes for the clash against the Robins. Basham started for the first time since February, whilst Fleck shook off a groin problem to feature

alongside the recalled trio of Berge, Robinson and Ndiaye. The Blades started positively and ultimately it the tone for the entire opening 45 minutes. Norwood dragged an early effort wide, before Bentley was quickly off his line to deny Gibbs-White who found himself in on goal from Fleck’s pass. The visitors were dominating the ball and enjoying plenty of it in the final third, but from a promising position, Berge struck a shot wide. Basham was harshly cautioned for a foul on Massengo and City’s only chance of the first period saw Martin head over from a James corner. On the half hour, Gibbs-White had a free-kick blocked by the wall, but in an attempt to prevent a corner, Bentley almost presented the Blades an opportunity, only for Klose to head clear. Gibbs-White and Ndiaye continued to look a dangerous combination, and Baldock almost caught out Bentley having latched on to Norwood’s clip in behind. Egan was another to be booked for a first infringement, halting the progress of Semenyo, before Bentley came racing out of his goal again. Berge got the better of him on the left, but his cross was headed away by Klose again before Ndiaye blazed over the best chance of the half. United had the first chance after half-time

time with Robinson heading straight at Bentley from Fleck’s cross and from the goalkeeper’s punt forward, Semenyo got the better of Basham and MARTIN made no mistake to put the hosts ahead against the run of play. The home side then had a further two chances on the break in quick succession, Semenyo fired over, before Martin tested Foderingham with a low effort. But seconds after the hour, United deservedly restored parity, with GIBBS-WHITE acrobatically converting on the rebound after Bentley could only palm away an effort from the right by Stevens. The Blades were pouring forward in numbers again and only a last-gasp challenge from Atkinson denied Stevens, who again had again popped up in the area. Osula was introduced, replacing Ndiaye, before Baldock was forced off with what appeared to be an injury, with Osborn drafted into the right-wing back slot. Weimann saw yellow for a nasty lunge on Stevens and it was the home side through Wells and then Atkinson who had efforts at goal late on. Six minutes of injury time were signalled but try as they might, the Blades couldn’t find a winner, with Osula’s tame effort the last action of note.

A scintillating first half display was the springboard for Wednesday to bounce back into the top six as they overcame promotion rivals MK Dons in Buckinghamshire. Star man Barry Bannan was the architect, providing two assists for Saido Berahino and Lee Gregory before converting a wonder-goal to put the visitors in complete control. It was far from plain sailing, though, as Troy Parrott reduced the arrears on the stroke of half time and Scott Twine did likewise late on but it was not enough as the Dons’ 15-match unbeaten run came to an end. Darren Moore’s men made the perfect start, hitting the front inside 10 minutes. And it was a bittersweet passage of play for MK goalkeeper Jamie Cumming. Cumming shone in front of the live Sky TV cameras as he dived low to his left to expertly divert a slide rule Gregory shot round the post but had no time to bask in the moment as his error allowed Wednesday the lead from the resulting corner. Bannan’s feed found Berahino, whose shot was too hot to handle and the ball squirmed through Cumming’s grasp to nestle in the net.Wednesday were in control, playing their passing game, and on 20 minutes it was 2-0. That man Bannan was at the heart once more, this time delivering a corner on to the foot of Gregory, who volleyed home to double the lead. But there was nothing routine about the third – indeed it ranks as a Goal

of the Season contender. Bannan was a full 40 yards out when a bouncing ball came his way. The skipper looked up, spotted the keeper off his line, and executed the most delightful dipping lob that sailed over a stunned Cumming and in.But just as the Owls were heading towards half time in dreamland, they suffered a double blow. First, Harlee Dean succumbed to injury and moments later the hosts clawed at the deficit. Parrott burst into space down the left channel on 40 minutes, cut inside, and did superbly well to clip past Bailey PeacockFarrell with four defenders on his trail. The goal certainly sparked the home side into life and they came within a lick of paint of pulling a second goal back moments after the restart. Conor Coventry took possession 25 yards out and unleashed an unstoppable shot that cannoned against the frame of Peacock-Farrell’s goal. Twine dragged a long range effort wide and the Owls responded with Marvin Johnson lashing a volley narrowly off target as the visitors began to take the sting from the game. The possession game resumed and, a Twine effort hoofed clear by Peacock-Farrell aside, MK struggled to make any kind of impact in the final third. That was until the fourth minute of stoppage time when the Dons pulled another

one back. Twine lined up a set piece from distance and his strike curled away from the diving Peacock-Farrell to set up a grandstand finish. But despite throwing men forward at every opportunity, the Dons could make no further inroads on a Wednesday side that hung on to post what could prove a vital victory. And Darren Moore was left speechless by the away support. “I have two words to say to them – thank you.” Darren Moore hailed the staggering support broadcast to the nation on Saturday evening at Stadium MK. Despite transport disruption over the Easter holiday period, over 5,500 Wednesdayites journeyed south and were served a feast of football as the Owls triumphed over MK Dons by the odd goal in five. And Moore was left in awe by the travelling hordes who raised the roof live on Sky TV: “I can’t thank them enough. We had over 5,000 at Bolton a couple of weeks ago and to see even more at MK was incredible considering the travel situation and the game was on TV. I want to thank them all. The noise was unbelievable and I’m so pleased we sent them home happy, whatever time it was when they got back to Sheffield. The connection we have is there for everyone to see, the fans got their reward on Saturday and so did the players. It was wonderful to see.”

rovers almost down millers get things back on track Gary McSheffrey says there must be a collective acceptance of responsibility as Rovers edged closer to relegation from Sky Bet League One. Rovers staged a remarkable comeback from 3-0 down at half time to draw 3-3 at Shrewsbury Town on Bank Holiday Monday, with Kyle Knoyle netting an injury time equaliser after Mipo Odubeko and Reo Griffiths reduced the deficit. The result left Rovers six points from safety with six points left to play for. To survive they would need a string of results to go in their favour, plus a considerable swing in goal difference. McSheffrey was pleased with the second half response at Montgomery Waters Meadow but conversation quickly turned to assessing the reasons for Rovers’ plight this season. “We need a big change in goal difference and for other teams to lose. It’s going to be difficult but miracles have happened before. It was a poor first half. I couldn’t put my finger on it but it looked off the pace and a bit leggy. They out-ran us, were on the front foot more. We had some words at half time, tweaked it a bit tactically, made a substitution and came out well. We had a good half of football, scored three goals to come back from three down. It was a good result really and we had opportunities to get a third before we did. Don’t get me wrong, Johnny had to make a couple of good saves when they played on the counter attack. Ultimately at half time I asked for a response and I got that. We got a good second half performance.”

Heart, desire and determination. Three words that epitomised the Good Friday display from Rotherham United in their 1-0 success over Ipswich Town at AESSEAL New York Stadium. With the Sky cameras in town, Paul Warne’s men knew three points would lift them back into the automatic promotion places. Following a second half onslaught, the winning goal finally came with 12 minutes left on the clock, when Michael Smith swept the ball home. On a day where so many stood up to the task and took the game to the Tractor Boys, there was one player on everyone’s lips come full time. Ollie Rathbone just never stopped running. Alongside Jamie Lindsay, he pressed and harried the visitors, forcing them into mistakes as well as winning possession back for his side, playing a crucial role in the high press. Rathbone’s performance was enough to win the Sky Man of the Match Award and he added a PA Entertainments Man of the Match crown to boot, with 58.3% of the 991 votes cast following the match. The Millers’ victory put them back in second position on goal difference. Following their disappointing reversal at the hands of Portsmouth in midweek, Millers boss Paul Warne made four changes for the visit of the Tractor Boys. Buoyed by a vociferous home backing, Rotherham were quick out of the blocks and they had the first sight of goal in the early minutes. After forcing an early corner, Miller curled over a deep centre which Smith headed back into the business area and Osei-Tutu had a low drive blocked en-route to goal, before Ipswich scrambled the ball clear. Despite the Millers’ early promptings, Ipswich missed a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring on eight minutes. A defensive splitting pass had Rotherham backtracking, and Wes Burns skipped away from the attentions of Miller before playing a perfectly-weighted cross along the face of the Millers goal, but James Norwood fluffed his lines with an awkward finish from close range, and the chance was lost. Warne was forced into an early personnel and tactical reshuffle when Miller was left grounded – with what appeared to be a muscle strain – and Dan Barlaser was introduced into the

fray. Ogbene was moved to the wing, and Ben Wiles switched into the number ten position. Both sides traded chances when Dominic Thompson skipped down the left flank to drill a low centre which Viktor Johansson was unable to reach but it evaded Ipswich runners before Smith, surprisingly, elected to pass, in a Millers foray, but Rathbone’s snap shot was bravely blocked by a retreating Ipswich defender. Burns became the first to see yellow for a cynical clip of Osei-Tutu’s heels. There was a flashpoint, in stoppage time, when Bersant Celina petulantly clashed with Rathbone, to leave the Millers midfielder on the ground, but the referee decided to brandish a yellow card, and not the red card that the AESSEAL New York Stadium crowd were baying for. However, Rotherham and Smith were not to be denied, and the Geordie marksman grabbed the decisive winner with 12 minutes to go. After much deliberation, Harding launched a long throw into the box and Ipswich failed to clear their lines with Rotherham pushing for a shooting opportunity, Osei-Tutu had a shot blocked, but the ball fell kindly for Smith, who kept his nerve, to arrow a low effort which beat the outstretched hand of Walton, to find the bottom corner of the net. The Millers frontman, who scooped a trio of awards at the end of Season Dinner, embarked on a celebratory run to the stands, as he netted his 25th goal of the season in all competitions, but his first in the league, since the end of February. Warne’s side, who had worked hard for their slender advantage, were in no mood to give it away, and with Richard Wood brought on for some defensive reinforcement, they showed good game management, in an unbelievable nine minutes of injury-time, to end a run of three successive defeats, and breathe some much-needed life into their automatic promotion challenge.
