Ariel Winter in “Stars on Mars”

Ever since Amazon magnate Jeff Bezo s’ trip into space last ear, there has been plenty of speculation about the rise of space tourism and which celebrities would be among the first to achieve liftoff. Well, for those wondering what it might look like to take things a step further and host a star-studded reality show in space, x has got you covered. The new reality competition series, tars on Mars,” premieres Monday, June 5, on Fox.

Equal parts Bravo and Star Trek, “Stars on Mars” features Captain James T. Kirk himself, William Shatner (“Star Trek: The riginal Series”). While not actually filmed in outer space (give that a few more years yet), the unscripted series follows a group celebrities who must spend an entire summer on a simulated, ars-like planet together

The series opens with the aspiring cosmonauts suiting up and settling into their new space mission-worthy digs, where they’ll “live, eat, sleep, strategize, and bond with each other” (per Fox) er the course of the series. Constantly assigned tasks by mission control — manned by Shatner, of course — each famous person will need to compete in a series of challenges with the aim of “colonizing” their out-of-this-world surroundings.

Successfully completing those tasks will prove to be key, because there’s a “Sur vivor” -like element to this competition: each week, they’ll vote to eliminate one of their crewmates and send them “back to Earth” (or rather, back to real life) until just one remains. There is a good mix of skills among the 12-person crew, including actors, athletes, public figures and philanthropists. When the series was officially announced in April, Allison Wallach, President of Unscripted Programming at Fox Entertainment, stated, “ The moment I heard the pitch for ‘Stars on Mars,’ I kne w show this bold, this big and this outlandish simply belonged on Fox. Gene Kelly and company are “Singin’ “ again c lassic corner

A legendar y film that ser ves as a great musical and a tribute to Hollywood’s golden age, “Singin’ in the Rain” — which Turner Classic Movies presents Tuesday, June 6 — is an essential entr y in the MGM catalog that never loses its sense of sheer fun, thanks in no small part to the appeal of a fabulous cast.

Teaming him with Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor, the 1952 picture boasts Gene Kelly as a movie star making the transition from the silent era to “talkies” … and needing a singer to help him with that switch. Kelly also co-directed with Stanley Donen, and among the fabulous numbers is O’Connor’s genuine showstopper “Make ‘Em Laugh,” which he literally throws himself into without reser vation. Rita Moreno had one of her earliest screen roles here.

“Mama’s Family” (Sunday, June 4, Catchy Comedy): One of the most popular elements of “ The Carol Burnett Show” became a series of its own, starting on NBC and then being revived in first-run syndication. This weekend-long marathon, continuing through early Monday morning, casts Vicki Lawrence in the title role of the sassy “Mama” who gives her relatives a major r un in the categories of attitude and sensibility Ken Berry and Dorothy Lyman also are cast regulars.
