What MPG Does the 2023 Toyota Corolla Get?

The Toyota Corolla was the automaker’s second-bestselling sedan in the U.S. for 2022 (trailing only its Camry sibling), and the nameplate wears lots of hats, including compact sedan, hatchback and subcompact SUV. The core appeal of the Corolla is mainstream transportation that’s affordable to buy (despite higher prices for 2023) and affordable to drive, thanks in part to competitive fuel efficiency for each of its versions.

How efficient? Below is the skinny on the skinniest fuel economy for the 2023 Corolla’s variants, trim levels and powertrains. The annual fuel costs included below are EPA estimates that assume 15,000 miles of 55% city driving and current fuel prices. You can personalize the estimate to match your driving habits and local fuel costs on the EPA’s fuel economy site.

New AWD Versions, New Hot Hatch

The 2023 model year brings several changes for the Corolla line, including refreshed styling, revised trim levels and new all-wheel-drive options. Going in another direction, there’s also a new track-oriented GR Corolla — an AWD hot hatch version of the Corolla Hatchback that injects some pizazz into the model’s DNA.

The Corolla offers four powertrain options for 2023, and all of them take regular fuel except the GR Corolla, which takes premium. The former base engine is gone, and all gasoline Corolla models are now powered by a 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Most are front-wheel drive, but AWD is available for the hybrid sedan and Corolla Cross SUV. The hybrid powertrain is based on the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine; it puts out 138 hp combined, a healthy boost from 121 hp for the 2022 model year. New for 2023, the hybrid sedans have the option of AWD with an electric motor for the rear axle, and just rolling out this summer is an AWD-only Corolla Cross Hybrid that uses a beefier 196-hp hybrid system based on a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

The new GR Corolla hatch lives up to its more aggressive looks with a standard 300-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine. It is matched with a standard six-speed manual transmission (no automatic offered) and a novel driver-adjustable AWD system.

2023 Corolla Vs. Gasoline Rivals

If you’re a budget buyer looking at efficient mainstream model-year 2023 compact cars with gasoline powertrains, the Corolla’s most economical four-door sedan, at 35 mpg combined, is just behind the stingiest Honda Civic sedan’s 36 mpg but beats the 33 mpg posted by the Nissan Sentra.

2023 Corolla Vs. Hybrid Rivals

For shoppers considering model-year ’23 hybrid cars, the most fuel-efficient Corolla Hybrid sedan’s 50 mpg combined trails its in-house rival, the larger and more expensive Toyota Prius hatchback, which boasts 57 mpg for its best-rated version. However, it’s just behind the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue compact sedan at 52 mpg. It’s still unknown whether the coming Honda Civic Hybrid sedan and hatchback promised for 2024 also will break the 50 mpg barrier.

2023 Corolla Vs. AWD Sedan Rivals

If you want a mainstream 2023 compact car but need AWD in your life, the AWD Corolla Hybrid is rated an impressive 48 mpg combined. That trails Toyota’s pricier AWD Prius (up to 54 mpg), but easily racks up AWD fuel savings versus the Subaru Impreza‘s best rating (32 mpg) and Mazda3 (30 mpg).

2023 Corolla Cross Vs. Small SUV Rivals

The Corolla Cross fares well for gas mileage in the intense and crowded small SUV crowd. Its combined rating is 32 mpg with FWD and 30 mpg with AWD, while the Honda HR-V is rated 28/27 mpg, the Chevrolet Trailblazer 31/28 mpg and the Kia Seltos 31/29 mpg. The AWD-only Subaru Crosstrek is rated up to 30 mpg, while the AWD-only Mazda CX-30 gets up to 29 mpg.

There isn’t much direct hybrid subcompact SUV competition for the new AWD-only Corolla Cross Hybrid going on sale in the summer; almost all current hybrid SUVs are in bigger and pricier classes than subcompact. Toyota estimates the Corolla’s AWD hybrid SUV will be rated for 42 mpg combined, while the top rating for the 2023 Kia Niro hybrid variant is 53 mpg — but the Kia is offered only with FWD.

2023 GR Corolla Vs. Hot Hatch Rivals

The AWD GR Corolla hatchback is on target for fuel efficiency among track-focused 2023 performance compact cars with standard manual transmissions. Its 24 mpg combined matches the FWD Honda Type R hatchback, trails the FWD Hyundai Elantra N sedan (25 mpg) and beats the AWD Volkswagen Golf R hatchback (23 mpg). Note that all need premium gasoline.
