About
The Old Town Hall is one of the most significant monuments in the Czech Republic. It was established in 1338 as the administrative seat for Prague's Old Town. Now, it is mainly used for the ceremonial purposes of the capital city, Prague. The historical town hall consists of a set of five medieval houses, the corner of which is adorned with a historical astronomical clock, a gothic oriel window and a massive rectangular tower. The lookout gallery on the town hall tower offers the most beautiful view of Prague. A tour of the historical halls in the Old Town Hall is a unique experience. The expensively decorated rooms date from various periods and are examples of the remarkable development of the town hall complex. The guided tours in various languages are organised in hourly intervals.

Neighborhood: Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighborhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.

- Jay BFairhope, Alabama1,058 contributionsA Prague Must DoThis gorgeous and historically important structure is simply a must do when you visit Prague. The Old Town Hall is located on the busy and diverse main town square, where the crowds can be quite oppressive. Note that the crowds get heavier near the top of each hour as people gather to view the astronomical clock presentation. Inside, you can purchase a ticket to go to the very top, where you will enjoy an incredible, panoramic view of Prague. Here are a couple of helpful hints. First, spring for the few extra bucks to take the elevator to the very top, skipping the stairs. You will save LOTS of time. Once you arrive at the top, go LEFT on the viewing platform, NOT TO THE RIGHT as the signs indicate. Slowly work your way counter clockwise around the tower and you will be treated to some of the best views you can imagine.Visited October 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten April 24, 2023
- CycleDude86Winston Salem, North Carolina70 contributionsA MustAnother location that’s a must if you visit. It’s impossible to miss almost. When the clock strikes the crowds gather but worthwhile. The walk to the top is ramps, not stairs, with an add’l charge if you want to take the elevator. It’s well worth it for outstanding 360 views. Despite the crowds, most skip the climb and it wasn’t that busy or crowded up top.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 10, 2023
- Christy JClarksville, Tennessee28 contributionsFun to See!The clock tower has a little 'show' each hour. It's very neat to watch, but it lasts less than a minute so set your expectations accordingly. Since there's so much to do & see in Old Town Square, it's easy to catch one of the clock shows. You do have to pay to go up into the Old Town Hall.Visited May 2023Written May 21, 2023

- Ron Hill80 contributionsAmazing clock in an amazing squareVisited this as part of the tour we were on. Amazing clock in the huge square with interesting historical buildings all around. Couldn't imagine how busy it would be in peak July/August as it was really busy when we visited in April which is supposed to be fairly quiet! A must see though whenever you visit.Visited April 2023Written June 10, 2023
- Peter CIsland of Malta, Malta2,545 contributionsMagnificent square steeped in historyA visit to the Old Town Square is a must when in Prague. It is the oldest and one of the most beautiful and historically significant squares of the city. Here you will find the Old Town Hall and famous Astonomical Clock, the Baroque Cathedral of St Nicholas, the Central Gallery with the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Tyn in the background, the National Gallery-Kinsky Palace, and a Monument dedicated to martyr Jan Hus in the middle. All deserve a visit. As you walk around you will also discover much more. Enjoy!Visited June 2023Traveled with friendsWritten June 13, 2023
- iloveaaaSingapore, Singapore27 contributionsGo to the top for the view! There is some climb up to the top of the Tower. But worth the view. Need to pay for a ticket. The ticket includes a tour of the underground. Do try to make it (check the timing and register your interest at the ticketing counter). I find it an eye opener to see the underground of Prague.Visited June 2023Written June 20, 2023

Walk around old town, and explore shops, cafés, and the streets of old town. At the top of every hour the clock chimes, so make sure to get a good spot to witness this event.Visited June 2023Traveled soloWritten June 20, 2023

It shows the location of the Sun and Moon and the lunar phases. This clock gets a lot of tourists every time it chimes as all of the big groups base their tours around it. There are quite a few bars surrounding the square so you car see and hear it while enjoying a drink or 2 (or more :)) - just be prepared for the price of the drinks. The clock itself is good to see once - all of the moving pieces are interesting and surprising it still works but you don't have to see it everyday.

The 600 year old astronomical clock was amazing. The skeleton ringing the bell was so cool. This is definitely a must see when in Prague. We watched it a few times in the day and once again at night. I saw something different every time I watched it. The engineering behind it is so clever. Make sure you watch out for pick pockets though. We also paid to go up the Old Town Hall tower. The views were stunning. Really nice to see an overview of the old town. However, we were only up the tower for 5 mins and for 250CZK (about £9) it felt a bit over priced. We preferred the Old Town Bridge Tower with the view of Charles Bridge and Lesser town for only 100CZK (about £3.70).

Prague is a on of most beautiful cities in Europe, but its old town is a jewel in its crown.it is a pleasure to walk and explore charming narrow streets with amazing old building and churches full of souvenir and small restaurants. in central square is always crowd watching most attractive part of it - astronomical clock. it is great piece of engineering. it shows month (as per zodiac), day and time, however time on this clock is counting not from midnight, as we regular to count. it is counting from the sun set (or first star)of the day before, as per old Jewish tradition, where new day starts in evening with first star showing itself. So time in this clock depends of seasons.

Looks cool but you’ll probably find the history behind the clock a little more interesting than its hourly show which if somewhat underwhelming.
Tourists can spend up to 30 minutes waiting to see the hourly show. If you’re there, passing by and want to see it, don’t turn up more than a couple minutes to the hour.

There is a 50% discount on admission - every day for the first hour after opening. Anytime after the first hour, there is also a 10% discount on admission when buying an eTicket online. Would highly recommend taking the guided tour, which is available only during certain times so check the schedule. Tours are available in multiple languages and registration is required at the ticket office. The cost of the guided tour is included with your purchased ticket.

Old Town Hall with its Clock in Old Town Square is worth a visit if you are in Prague, waiting for the Clock to function at the top of the hour is a must see/do. Just watch out for your pockets when the clock does it thing since everyone is looking up. Another must do is to pay for the views at the top of the tower, great view of the square from the top and of Prague, worth the price of the ticket!

We stayed in Prague for 5 days and every day we would venture to the old town, i love anything historic and for me it beat the roads with its numerous designer shops.
It gets very busy so you have to choose your times, great place to sit and people watch in one of the many cafes and obviously to watch the Astronomical clock do its thing.
The clock was installed in 1410 and is the third oldest Astronomical clock in the world and the oldest clock still working. The Astronomical dial represents the sun and moon, It has various statues of catholic saints on either side of it and on the hour gives a great performance of the Apostles walk also look out for the skeleton representing death.
There is a local legend that states the city will suffer if the clock is neglected.

Great view of the city, but it is small at the top. When you walk into the information center, you have to go up to the 3rd floor to buy a ticket, one night there was 20-30 people waiting for the elevator so opted to go back another night. No one was waiting, so went to the 3rd floor, bought a ticket and went up. Maybe 20 people at the top, which was nice for taking pictures. We took the elevator to the top and walked the ramp down. Not sure how that works if its busier (ie the lift may only be for those that cannot walk up the ramp).

Arrive up to 15 minutes before the hour as crowds start to form early. It's best to get a spot face on to the clock as there's little parts you miss from watching it side on. Better to see in the daylight than at night.

First the good news the views from the top are well worth the climb up the stairs, however the control of the people waiting to walk around the top was extremely poor. There were signs to say everyone should go round clockwise but as there was no one to ensure that was happening people began to go both ways trying to get the best views. It became extremely cramped with everyone trying to get past each other. At times we felt it was actually dangerous. It would have only taken someone to become claustrophobic and it could easily have become serious very quickly. When we mentioned it to a member of staff they simply said they were short staffed and there was nothing they could do. We got the impression it was not the first time this had happened. This is simply not acceptable

Hi, for the Old Town Hall with Astronomical Clock in Prague, if I just enter the old town hall to take a look and see the mechanism behind the clock by on our own, not joined the guided tour, do I need to pay any fee? can I do that on our own, not joining the tour if I don't see the basement? thanks.

It’s definitely worth the walk up via the Town Hall chambers, which are full of interest in their own right. 150 Czech koruna is the price. It’s not to be missed, view from the top is amazing.

Yes I’ve just come back from Prague. To the left of the clock is a door go through and either take the lift or stairs to the third floor. There you can pay for your admission to the viewing point. You can also pay for a lift pass up to the viewing point at an extra cost. Beware this lift is manned so no ticket no lift. Otherwise you will walk to it. You walk up slopes until you reach a spiral stair case . It’s not very exhaustive

Prague is always busy! I don’t think the tourist season ever stops but you should still go - it’s really beautiful ... and if you like classical music you’ll find lots of great concerts.

May I know if I buy a mobile ticket, can I join the guided tour for free? Can I book the guided tour online by email first? Is there any restriction on the time of the climb to the tower and the guided tour? Do they need to be, say, within two hours?

Hi, I’m not sure about the online ticket, but when you arrive go to the desk upstairs (next to the entrance to the town hall), you can book the time slots for the guided tour for the basement and town hall tour from that desk. I would recommend booking the time slots for this before going to visit the clock tower. When we went the ticket lasted all day for all 3 features, but you can only do each one once. We had to go back after a few hours wait for the basement tour as you are not allowed to do this by yourself and the slots were booked. Hope this helps. Enjoy.
