PC version: How does multiplayer actually work?

Question

Ok, so I've been struggling to find a straight forward answer to this that simply explains it. How does multiplayer actually work? I ask, because I'm standing here at a road paver, and besides myself, only two other people have contributed to it. Now I'm sure plenty of other players have already built this road, but it just seems awfully strange with all the traffic in the area. So how does the whole thing work? Is it that those are the only players who have recently contributed? How about servers/channels, and how do I know where I am and such?

Also side question, how do I request cooperation for upgrading/finishing/repairing structures? Using Keyboard/Mouse.

If I'm not mistaken, the more you like/interact with others, the more your things will show to them. There's the thing you unlock after a certain point that let's you make better contact with other players too -- try to use that to affiliate with players that you have interact with // have interacted with you.

It's the Love Knot. Obtained from the Spiritualist when delivering the rock samples (Order No. 53)

As for the roads, yeah seems to work in a strange way. It seems like you are the only one that can actually finish the road in your own world but other players can contribute about half of the resources required (I guess this was done to make sure it's not too easy to get to places when you first start out). You do receive messages like "A players used a road you've built" accompanied by some likes, but I think that's just what everyone gets once they built the road in their world, but I am also not 100% sure.

, yeah seems to work

Oh I see. So it is like Dark Souls...it depends on what "phase" your world is in, and how many players there are in the same phase. Ok I think I see that.

Sort of, you just don't actually encounter any other players. The world you play in is your own, just objects, signs and cargo from other players can appear in your world from their's if the chiral network is established in the region you are in (also a clever mechanic to make initial travels to new regions not that easy). Again as for roads, it seems like you are the only one that can actually finish the construction in your world.

I've had a few roads in my world completed by other players. I know this because I was trying to complete them all by myself.

Huh, never happened to me. So if that's true then that's interesting. I built all of mine myself and almost built all of them at this point.

The way i think about it is that the game takes a snapshots of your game world every so often, and then distributes bits of that with other players worlds and the same back to you. The location of structures, vehicles, lost cargo. When someone adds materials to a structure that may or may not filter through to your world also.

Being a video game that has to be programmed using hard logic, there's going to be set values and chances that dictate exactly how often and to what degree certain things happen, but without someone going to the trouble of data mining the game I don't think we'll ever likely find things like that out as I don't see Kojima or anyone from his studio talking about it. It would kind of break the magic of the game making it seem like everything is connected, while also trying to balance out gameplay elements out of sight from the player.

yes

Can you meet other players?

no

How does multiplayer actually work?

When other players, who play online, build structures and vehicles or put down signs, there's is a chance for those things to appear in your world and vice versa.

I'm standing here at a road paver, and besides myself, only two other people have contributed to it.

In the second map of the game, there are several auto-pavers located in specific places. Each auto-paver needs certain amount of materials for it to build a highway road.

If you happen to find an auto-paver with materials already added to it, it means another player already contributed to that specific auto-paver but most of the time, you'll be the one to add the final amount of materials needed to finish the road.

It is also advised to build up the Chiral Network first before you consider contributing any materials to an auto-paver because an auto-paver NOT within CN coverage apparently do not accumulate materials from other online players. When you open up your map, press T on the keyboard to see the CN area coverage.

How do I request cooperation for upgrading/finishing/repairing structures?

Open up your map and mouse over a structure and you'll see the options - https://i.imgur.com/iEoowia.jpg

How about servers/channels?

If you want play around a specific group of players, try out Strand Contracts. Open the Bridge Link section in your map to see the list of players you're connected to. Choose a player you want to make a Strand Contract with and you'll see more of that player's structure/vehicle/signs/equipment in your world.

The way I’ve seen it work is that the game starts off by selecting a number of random players’ structures to populate your world. As you like structures and progress through the story, that number of structures and players you interact with increases. But I think there’s some limiter on the game where it’ll throttle the “help” you get so the game doesn’t complete itself for you (if a player/players build a whole zipline network from mountain Knot down to distro west of lake knot, the game will only populate that zip-line network sporadically, so that there’s not a complete line). So like, when I first started seeing a substantial amount of structures in episode 4 I think(?), roads had resources contributed but it was barely anything; but as I progressed through the game, I noticed that unfinished roads were having more resources already contributed, ultimately making it to where I really only needed to do one resource run for most roads. I’ve also noticed something else, I spent my whole first play through liking every single structure, track, vehicle, etc. I came across and my world was full of footpaths and bridges right when I unlocked the bulk of the structures to build. But now I’m replaying the game, not liking anything and trying to interact with as few of other players’ structures as possible, and my world looks incredibly more barren in episode 4 than it did on my first play through, so it seems liking and using other players’ stuff greatly affects how much you actually see.
