Willow Shares 'Darkly Beautiful' Song 'Big Feelings' and Reveals Release Date for New Album empathogen

Willow's forthcoming album 'empathogen' drops on May 3

Willow is back with a lot of emotions to share.

On Thursday, the "Transparent Soul" artist, 23, whose parents are Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, released a new single titled “Big Feelings" and announced her forthcoming album empathogen will drop on May 3.

"The piano part of this song is so dense and dissonant but also darkly beautiful," Willow (born Willow Smith) said in a press release of the single.

"I wrote 'b i g f e e l i n g s' during a week where I was coming to terms with my own emotional patterns that I hadn’t known were there," she continued. "Musically, it has a darkness and complexity that reflects what we all experience in our own minds. The song is about accepting those intense feelings that you have no idea what to do with."

Per the release, empathogen follows Willow through a journey of bringing her back to earth after releasing two rock-inspired albums.

"Tactile and transcendent, it sees Willow tapping into 'ancestral energy' to evoke a sense of mystery. Features from Jon Batiste and St. Vincent drive home the album’s bent towards technical musicianship, while Willow's voice – grown deeper and richer over time – takes center stage. It is an album that embraces tension – light and dark, free-spiritedness and social pressures, playfulness and depth," the release states.

Fans can pre-save empathogen here.

Her new single follows the release of "symptom of life" in March. Meanwhile, empathogen will follow Willow's 2022 album and 2021's lately I feel EVERYTHING.

Willow got her start in music at just nine years old when she released the viral hit "Whip My Hair" and quickly signed with JAY-Z's label Roc Nation, becoming the youngest artist to do so. The following year, she toured internationally with Justin Bieber. Then, in 2012, it got to be too much and she defiantly shaved her head.

"It was the perfect way to rebel," she told PEOPLE in 2019 of the decision. "I was super young, and I had a dream, but all I really wanted to do was sing and I didn't equate that with all the business and the stress that ended up coming with it. I was just like, 'Whoa, this is not the life that I want.'"

In addition to her music, the "Meet Me at Our Spot" musician has also co-hosted Red Table Talk with her mom and grandmother, Adrienne Banfield-Noris.

In April of last year, she performed at Coachella and the Hitch actor, 55, showed his support in the crowd. During her performance, she brought out her brother Jaden to sing their collaborative track, "Summertime in Paris."
