The Horniman Museum and Gardens is an inspiring, surprising, family-friendly, free attraction in South London’s Forest Hill. The Museum has been open since Victorian times, when Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to visitors. Since then, the collection has grown tenfold and includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium and natural history collection.Unusually for such an important museum, you can see the collection up-close and face-to-face. You can even pick up, try on and play with some objects.Visitors come time and again to explore this free museum, take part in our activities and enjoy the 16-acre gardens.

Free main exhibit and gardens, lovely way to spend a few hours
Free entrance to main museum and gardens, you can pay extra for temporary exhibits and the aquarium. Very popular soft play if you have children, ditto small crazy golf for kids outside. On a sunny day it’s a glorious place to have a picnic. There’s also a small outside animal enclosure with goats, alpacas and various other creatures - this too is free.

Great views of London from The Bandstand
Excellent way to spend a few hours. Museum has a large collection of displays covering anthropology, natural history and musical instruments. Entry is free unless you want to see the acquarium and/or butterfly House. The gardens are also worth exploring. Great views of London. @MyBucketListAt60

    An outstanding museum
Had not been here for about 30 years and was pleased to find that the museum is still an exceptional place to visit. It cannot be fully appreciated in one go as there are so many great areas to investigate. The gardens are extensive and the aquarium and butterfly house are also worth seeing. Went on a Saturday as I can imagine that weekdays will see many school visits - which I am strongly in favour of nevertheless. I shall certainly return. Deservedly voted Museum of the Year.

    Child friendly and welcoming
I went with family including a young child in a pushchair. The museum is very welcoming and family friendly. There were lifts to access the different floors and baby changing facilities. The cafe served tasty food and was reasonably priced. Part of the museum is free - the musical instruments, the stuffed animals, the world collection. Other parts have a fee [the butterfly house, the temporary softplay, the aquarium and the current exhibition of brick dinos}. We had art fund, which gave us free entry to all but softplay, or there was a membership scheme. The place was teeming with life from babies and school groups to old people. Our young child loved the fish, the softplay and playing with bricks in the dino display. The park is free and extensive. It included a playground and animals, a flower garden and a band stand. The museum won the Art Fund Museum of the year in 2022 and it certainly was used by the local community. This was my first visit and I intend to return.

A gem in south east London
I have fond memories of visiting the museum on school trips in primary school and now my daughter is 5 I felt she was at the right age to appreciate it too. She had a great time and was fascinated by what was displayed. We had paid in advance to visit the butterfly garden but it was out of action due to issues with the heaters so we bought tickets for the aquarium instead and she also loved this. We had lunch at the cafe which was busy but the staff were so lovely and hardworking. I stupidly forgot to wait for my tea and had already sat down but a lovely young lady who was bringing out the food orders kindly retrieved it for me. Next time we visit I’ll take a packed lunch to enjoy outdoors in the lovely gardens. The view from the bandstand was also fabulous.

    Gem in South London
Fantastic and free museum in the neighborhood. I found the natural history and anthropology really interesting and well presented, really a jewel in South London. Music section was nice too especially the samples of music from the different instruments. Didn't get to see the gardens due to the rain, but will definitely return

Great museum let down by unruly children
Excellent museum let down by unruly children. This is an excellent museum where you could easily spend the whole day. Free entry to the museum with certain sections such as aquarium requiring payment. Nice cafe but go early as post lunch most of the cakes were sold out. Lovely seating area in the conservatory. Nice gardens with trails. Museum itself is excellent with three exhibitions - natural history, world culture and musical instruments. Plus an exhibition (currently) on the history of tea. I can see who this was voted the best museum in the UK and I can heartily recommend it for its well curated collections. However, it was heavily let down by its acceptance of out of control, unruly and screaming children everywhere. A moving floor visual in the world culture section made this whole area unbearable as it encouraged running, jumping and screaming from children. Parents exerted no control and not did museum staff. The museum really needs to address this as it made the museum inaccessible for the disabled. I would advise those with neurodiversity, autism etc to carefully consider visiting as you need noise cancelling headphones.
Hi Sarah, thank you for your comments. We’re so pleased to hear you enjoy visiting the Museum and our natural History, Anthropology and Music Galleries. The Museum can be noisy at times, but afternoons during term time are usually the quietest times to visit. Museum of the unexpected
A day out with the grandchildren and a bit further afield. We travelled by train to South London and the Horniman Museum. We booked our visit in advance and also paid to see the butterfly house. It is a short walk from the station. There is a good café there. The butterfly house was a big hit with the children, and they were thrilled when butterflies landed on them. The butterfly house is small, but we were surprised that we spent an hour there. We had a picnic in the gardens and from the top of the hill we had some great views of London. The weather clouded over in the afternoon so we spent time in the museum. The over-stuffed walrus was a must see. The children enjoyed the musical instruments section - it do not realise there were so many brass instruments. We left mid-afternoon to miss the evening rush. All in all and very good day out.

Excellent museum and its mainly free to visit
This has been on my list of “place to visit” since just before the pandemic. I had chosen it because it sounded different from the normal museum We travelled to the museum by train (3 each way) and a walk from the station. We had a quick visit to the cafe for a hot drink and cakes. Excellent choice of cakes and they were lovely. Café was clean with a seating area outside. If it had been a sunny warm day it would have a lovely to sit outside. We had limited time there so only visited the natural history and world culture exhibitions and an exhibition (currently) on the history of tea. It was here that I found some information about its founder. Also there were activities which I did which related to tea. There were lots of children there as part of a school visit but they were well behaved and there was plenty of space I so enjoyed the world exhibition which is different as it had lots about the “lost history” of Africa. It was some recognition of the narrative white people created and set out to change this. I like that it tackled issues e.g. migration, slavery, etc The exhibits of different native clothes and artifacts from around the world were interesting. It was intriguing walking around the displays taxidermised animals (birds, fish, etc). We are so used to seeing them on TV in natural history programmes. It was quite quaint looking at them as innate objects. We then did a quick visit of the garden. Because of the time of year there was not a lot to see and some parts were closed off as work was being carried out. But I did enjoy walking around the outside animal enclosure with goats, alpacas and various other animals including the largest rabbit I had ever seen. We did have an amazing view of central London and because of the weather it looked a surreal grey/silver. I would visit again as I know I missed parts. Also assume that the museum hosts other exhibits sometimes.

What a fantastic little museum! I can’t believe I’ve never been before. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

I took my 10 year old son on a school inset day. I thought we’d spend no more than a couple of hours there and to be honest, I only booked the trip to avoid my son spending an entire day playing on tech.

But to my amazement, we spent five hours at the Horniman and the time just flew by! The aquarium was a particular hit - well worth the small additional entrance fee. We enjoyed the butterfly house and I practically had to tear my son out of World gallery! There’s loads of interactive elements that encourage you to engage with the information on offer. But what makes this museum so engaging is its eclectic nature. The themes are diverse and include natural history, black music in the UK, cultures of the world and the evolution of primates (to name a few). This diversity creates an environment where there really is something for everyone. It’s really very special.

All the staff we encountered were polite, professional and pleasant. I’d like to give a special shout-out to the girl in the butterfly house who was a mine of information.

There’s a lovely cafe serving a good range of food, but for those on a budget there’s plenty of tables for eating a picnic lunch, including a beautiful Victorian style glass house/conservatory next to the cafe for indoor eating. The gardens are beautiful and I’d love to explore them in more detail during our next visit. Sadly, we ran out of time on this visit.

I’d like to go back on a weekend, as I believe there are regular events that take place in the gardens. There’s also a market in the gardens on Sundays which would be right up my husband’s street.

If you haven’t been to the Horniman before, I’d recommend you give it a shot.

A well organised museum that caters for all. The museum is situated at the entrance to the gardens. The main exhibition always has something on. They have the main museum, aquarium and exhibitions which run throughout the year. With Covid this led to online bookings in order to manage the flow of users. There is an animal walk and the butterfly house in the gardens. There is also a lovely cafe in which I must recommend the soup of the day. If you are on a budget then the gardens have more than enough seating areas if you carry a packed lunch.

I live around the corner from the museum and I go there very often.
It's a really good anthroology museum with a nice cafe'.
The museum is situated at about 5/8 mins walk from Forest Hill station (National Railway and Overground Line). It's also very easy to find.

I had hoped that with Covid-19 restritctions the museum would be fairly quiet, especially as only a few tickets had been booked in our time slot and the one before. I was wrong: as soon as we entered the premises we were deafened by the squeals and screams of pre-schoolers running in all directions, leaving saliva and finger marks on the display cases. Staff and parents seemed to think that this was perfectly acceptable behaviour in a museum, and made no attempt to control the children.
The noise levels were so bad we left within 2 minutes of arriving and will not be coming back.

We visited hornimans museum for the first time - WOW it was amazing there is so much to do and see my grandson said museum are boring! But when we got there he changed his mind. We first visited the butterfly house ken was amazing lots of facts and talked to my grandson about the cycle of butterflies. He showed himthe eggs then the different stages of Caterpillars.
It's a cheap day out and educational too. We will go back again soon and take his friend. All the staff were lovely chatting to us telling us about the different items. We went to see the dinosaurs and the aquarium which was great.
Thanks horimon

This place is worth a visit or 10!
So much to see, we could have spent days looking at all of the artefacts and wandering the gardens. Adults and children alike would enjoy many aspects of this grand venue.
The hands on experience is fantastic especially for children, you get to look through boxes of objects and handle them. Playing instruments and feeling how sharp a sharks tooth is was fab!
The cafe space was lovely with plenty of choice including the street food in the market on sundays. Il go again.

I’ve always enjoyed visiting the Horniman Museum and was really pleased when it reopened after lockdown. This was my first trip there with my little one since it reopened. The museum is still lovely and the dinosaur exhibition they had on at the moment is great for kids, especially the animatronic dinosaurs! The grounds are lovely and the cafe served yummy food.

My reason for 4 stars and not 5 unfortunately concern the Covid measures in place and the impact they have on the overall experience. Please don’t get me wrong, I 100% understand that it is incredibly difficult to put the required things in place in order to reopen and not lose a bit of the original ambience.
My overall feeling though was that the staff were quite stressed. On previous visits I’ve always noted how lovely and friendly the staff are, particularly as there are often so many pre-school kids running around the place! With the new restrictions in place it became obvious quite quickly that the mixture of little (unpredictable) kids and stringent Covid measures was a recipe for stressed staff. They often seemed flustered and frustrated with kids not following the rules or running the wrong way etc. It is of course the responsibility of parents to control their kids but it’s also impossible to expect children under 5 to always understand and adhere to so many new restrictions. Also the decision to close the cafe toilets is very frustrating as of course when my little one inevitably needed the loo as soon as we sat down for lunch we had to traipse up the hill to the garden toilets! I really couldn’t see any logical reason why they’d close the cafe toilets as it very much made lunch a bit of a palaver!

We are so glad you enjoyed the Museum and Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs. The toilets by the café have been closed because of social distancing measures – unfortunately, the lobby space where you access the toilets is quite restricted. However, we are very grateful for all your feedback which we will make sure to share with the relevant staff.

My son and I had the BEST day out here. There's so much to do. We went around the natural history section and the educational room which had lots of interactive resources for little inquisitive hands to do. My son loved the fact that after seeing all the animals in the displays that he could actually stroke a badger and fox. Great idea. There were also free exhibitions here to walk round. We saw the 'Hair' exhibition which was interesting and again things to do rather than look and read on a screen or play a video game. The paying exhibitions are at a good afford able price and worth the money. We went to the Cat and Dog, Aquarium and the Butterfly House exhibition. All amazing. Great for all ages. We want to go back already.

I was hugely impressed by my visit to the Horniman Museum.

There was a great welcome at the main entrance and the children loved the free galleries, especially the world gallery and seeing the walrus. There was a handling table where my little niece loved touching the snakeskin. They loved the musical instrument galleries and playing all the different instruments.

We paid for the aquarium and butterfly house and it was well worth it. The boys and girls with us (2, 6, 8 and 11) all loved these. The guide in the Butterfly House who took the time to show us all the chrysalis under a leaf made the visit there.

We had a child with Autism with us and I was very impressed by the museum approach to ASD. I called in advance. There was a queue skip option and although we didn’t need to ask to use it knowing it was there really helped both the child in question and the adults. There is an amazing quiet space just off the music galleries with floor mats, cushions and books and he loved this. It made me realise that just that little bit of time to recharge in a peaceful space was something that made such a difference. Thank you Horniman Museum ❤️

Just one small suggestion - when I called to say I was bringing a child with autism the quiet room wasn’t mentioned. It would be great to suggest to all staff they highlight this.
