Hoe woonden onze (groot)ouders?

I went here with a group and we did the boat and train experience both were really good. The boat was historical and it was lovely to look around. Facilities on board toilets and cafe both good. Lovely views from the water too.

Enkhuizen was a pretty small town but with an amazing bakery at the end of the shops by the bridge! Very charming place to look around.

Train trip was stunning! To see the bulb fields, windmills, houses and wildlife. On board a buffet car for drinks if you wanted. Toilets at the stations along the journey. Staff very informative and chatty.

Hoorn itself had lots of shops if you go over the bridge and also some very interesting sights

    Great time thanks

The Westfries museum (currenly under renovation) is housed in a former administrative building called Statencollege. It is located in the center of Hoorn. Built in 1632 when Hoorn along with Amsterdam and Enkhuizen was flourishing at the center of an emerging new worldpower. Trade with the East Indies and the Baltic during the 17th century led to an enormous accumulation of wealth. The Statencollege building underscores the prosperity of the city, a showpiece of Dutch Renaissance style architecture.

I think we were unlucky that a large party was dining, and the kitchen seemed not to be on top of things. We waited an hour for our starters, while the female server, clearly annoyed with the kitchen, provided us with bread to satisfy our hunger. Once the food arrived it was very good and the kitchen was back in control. Main course and dessert arrived more promptly.

The "Varend Erfgoed" museum is located southeast of the historic center at what is called Oostereiland (Easter island). This part of the harbour area was developed during the mid 1600s. The museum is run by motivated sail enthusiasts and serves not only tourists, but also is a place where restoration and maintenance of historic vessels is undertaken. There are very many different types of boats to be admired.

This lovingly restored C17 merchant's house is a must-see. The friendly stewards give you personal attention and everything is hands-on. You can open the cupboards and lie on the beds! They even made us delicious tea in genuine 400 year old Delft teacups! We LOVED it and learned a lot about the Dutch Golden Age in this atmospheric place.

There was a street music festival on Saturday and when I saw the church was open, I didn't think twice to go inside. It's a big church with stained glass windows and a dome. It has beautiful wooden ceiling

This is the big church on the square, a landmark one that you will see from all over town. A bit sober, but worth your time.

The three houses on the "Slaperhaven" have facade with images of ships. Those images told an age-old story about the battle on the Zuiderzee (South sea) in october 11, 1573. And.... that's it as we couldn't visit the houses.

Although it was windy and a typical Dutch drizzle rain was coming down, we decided to make a stroll through the park. We were not disappointed! Beautiful views of the harbor of Hoorn and the Ijsselmeer (the former Southern Sea, part of the North Sea). There were even deer to see!!
Will certainly come back in the summer...

Located at the eastern periphery of the old town, the Oosterpoort is still a robust structure. It is the only historic gate left in Hoorn. The Renaissance style building escaped demolition during the 1870s because the gate keeper living on top could not find alternative accommodation. Remarkable they built the gatekeepers house on top of the gate in 1601 never anticipating it would save the structure.

Completed in 1618 after the (Catholic) monastery at this location was confiscated and demolished by the new Protestant authorities. The chapel was spared and was integrated in the new structure. For centuries the building served as a hotel for delegates to the 'Staten of Holland and West Friesland'. Until the late 1970s it was Hoorn's townhall.

I found the Italian inspired manierist architectural style a bit over the top, but perhaps this is caused by excess ornamentation brought on during later centuries. Maurits van Oranje (the killer prince ) is on top of the building.
