2019 Honda Civic Overview

Is the 2019 Honda Civic a Good Used Car?

Yes, the 2019 Civic is a good used compact car . It delivers precise steering, sporty handing, and a comfortable ride. It also benefits from a fuel-efficient base engine and more-powerful engines in its performance-oriented Civic Si and Type R models. You'll also find a wealth of standard safety features in its upscale interior. Additionally, it's available in several body styles: sedan, coupe, and hatchback.

This Honda is not perfect, however. It suffers from a below-average predicted reliability rating, and its available touch screen is not very user-friendly. There are some other cars worth considering before making your final decision. For example, the 2019 Honda Accord and 2019 Mazda3 both offer additional standard tech features and a more intuitive available touch screen.

Which Used Honda Civic Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2019 Honda Civic comes in seven main trims, though availability depends on body style. Trims for the sedan model include: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Touring, while coupe models are available in all but the EX-L trim. Last but not least, hatchback models are available in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring trims.

We recommend the Sport trim. It comes with everything found in the base trim, including the Honda Sensing suite of active safety tech, but adds a larger touch screen, smartphone integration, and features like push-button start.

Performance-oriented shoppers can choose between the 205-horsepower Civic Si (available as a sedan and a coupe) or the 306-horsepower Type R, which is the performance hatchback model and the king of the lineup.

  • Honda Civic LX: The standard LX trim comes with a 5-inch infotainment display, a four-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, cloth upholstery, automatic climate control, and a multi-angle rearview parking camera. It also includes the Honda Sensing suite of active safety features, which adds forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist.
  • Honda Civic Sport: The Sport trim comes with an upgraded infotainment system that includes a 7-inch touch screen, eight speakers, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and an additional USB port. It also has cloth and synthetic leather upholstery, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, remote start, and alloy wheels.
  • Honda Civic EX: The EX trim adds an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof, satellite radio, HD Radio, and the Honda LaneWatch blind spot camera.
  • Honda Civic EX-L and EX-L Navi: The sedan-only EX-L trim adds leather upholstery and an auto-dimming rearview mirror, while the hatchback-only EX-L Navi comes with navigation and genuine leather upholstery.
  • Honda Civic Touring and Sport Touring: The Touring sedan adds navigation, a 10-speaker premium stereo, heated rear seats, a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Touring coupes add navigation, leather upholstery, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The hatchback-only Sport Touring trim adds rain-sensing windshield wipers, a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat, and a 12-speaker premium audio system.

What Does Honda's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Honda offers two levels of certification for its certified pre-owned vehicles: HondaTrue Certified and HondaTrue Certified+. Both levels come with a seven-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, roadside assistance, up to two oil changes within the first year of ownership and a 90-day satellite radio trial subscription.

The vehicle’s model year determines which program and repair coverage it qualifies for. HondaTrue Certified covers vehicles from the 2018 through 2023 model years and with fewer than 80,000 miles. For vehicles still under the new-car warranty, Honda extends coverage to four years from the original sale date or 48,000 miles. For vehicles outside the new-car warranty, Honda offers a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty. HondaTrue Certified+ is for 2022 and 2023 models with fewer than 12,000 miles. For these vehicles, Honda extends the new-car warranty to five years from the original sale date or 86,000 miles. Additional benefits may be available.

According to our analysis, Honda’s CPO program is one of the best among affordable carmakers, besting competitors such as Toyota, Hyundai, Chevy and Ford.

2019 Honda Civic Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2019 Honda Civic or 2019 Honda Accord?

The 2019 Honda Accord and Civic both offer peppy engines, lithe handling, and many standard safety features. However, the Accord is a midsize car with additional seating space and slightly more cargo space than the Civic coupe and sedan. The Civic has three body styles (coupe, sedan, and hatchback) while the Accord only comes as a sedan. Also, you'll likely find the Civic at a lower price. Additionally, the Civic has a couple of performance variants that the Accord lacks.

Besides extra space, the Accord has one major advantage over the Civic: Its infotainment setup is much easier to use. Ultimately these two vehicles each have their pros and cons, so it's best to let personal preference determine which one you go for.

Which Is Better: 2019 Honda Civic or 2019 Toyota Corolla?

The 2019 Toyota Corolla features a higher predicted reliability rating than the Civic, a larger standard infotainment display (7 inches versus 5 ), as well as abundant cargo space in its hatchback model and lots of passenger room in its sedan model. Still, the Civic is a superior vehicle because of its stronger engine options, more refined cabin, and better driving dynamics.

Which Is Better: 2019 Honda Civic or 2019 Mazda3?

The 2019 Mazda3 is one of a few compact cars that deliver a similar level of overall performance as the Civic. It benefits from a good blend of comfort and sportiness as well as a lively lineup of engines. Like the Civic, it also features upscale cabin materials. The Mazda3 has a slightly higher predicted reliability rating and a sizeable standard 8.8-inch infotainment interface. The Civic has a few advantages as well: namely, additional passenger and cargo room and better gas mileage, as well as two performance-oriented variants. These two cars are close in our rankings, so test-drive both to decide which one best fits your needs.

2019 Civic Performance

How Does the 2019 Honda Civic Drive?

The Honda Civic's standard engine provides ample power for daily travels, and it's fuel-efficient as well, especially when paired with the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

You can also opt for a more powerful and more fuel-efficient turbocharged engine. It comes standard with the smooth-shifting CVT, and it’s available with the manual transmission.

With accurate steering, strong brakes, and sporty handling, the Civic delivers one of the most engaging rides in the class. In addition, this small car can easily carve corners while maintaining a stable ride.

There are two performance models available that dial up the fun. The Civic Si offers a splash more power than the regular Civic's turbocharged engine, and the Type R features a high-output engine and a unique suspension setup. These models are only available with the manual transmission.

  • Base engine: 158-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder
  • Available engines:
    • 174- or 180-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder
    • 205-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder (Si)

  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive
  • Transmission: standard six-speed manual; available continuously variable automatic (CVT)

Does the 2019 Honda Civic Get Good Gas Mileage?

The Civic gets great fuel economy figures for the class, especially in non-performance models with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine and CVT.

  • 2.0-liter four-cylinder, six-speed manual: up to 25/36 mpg city/highway
  • 2.0-liter four-cylinder, CVT: up to 30/38 mpg
  • 1.5 turbo four-cylinder, CVT: up to 32/42 mpg
  • 1.5 turbo four-cylinder, six-speed manual: up to 29/38 mpg

2019 Civic Interior

How Many People Does the 2019 Civic Seat?

The 2019 Civic has several body styles to choose from, including a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan, and a four-door hatchback. There's seating for up to five people in two rows in all models except the Type R, which seats just four.

The front row has plenty of space, comfort, and support for adults, and legroom is generous in the rear. However, taller passengers will likely wish for extra rear-seat headroom.

Inside, you'll find high-quality materials, right down to the soft-touch plastics that cover most surfaces.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery

Available seating features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated seats
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Power-adjustable front seats

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2019 Honda Civic?

The 2019 Civic has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors for the rear outboard seats and an upper tether for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for ease of use. The upper tethers are easy to find, but the lower anchors are too deep in the seats.

2019 Honda Civic Features

The Civic's standard infotainment system is pretty bare bones, but it features straightforward physical buttons that make it easy to navigate its small display. An upgraded infotainment system with smartphone integration technology and a touch screen comes in all but the base trim, but it's tricky to operate.

While Honda thankfully put a volume knob back on the upgraded system after foregoing one in previous years, the interface still suffers from small virtual buttons and minimal physical controls.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 5-inch display, Bluetooth, a USB port, and four speakers
  • Available infotainment features: a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, an additional USB port, a premium audio system, and navigation
  • Additional standard features: automatic climate control and remote keyless entry
  • Other available features: dual-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof, push-button start, and proximity keyless entry
