Judge Diane Gujarati

Diane Gujarati was appointed United States District Judge for the Eastern District of New York on September 18, 2020 and entered on duty on September 22, 2020.  She graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University in 1990 with a B.A. in Economics, summa cum laude, and received her J.D. in 1995 from Yale Law School, where she served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal.

From 1995 to 1996, Judge Gujarati served as a law clerk to the Honorable John M. Walker, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.  From 1996 to 1999, she was an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell.  From 1999 until her appointment to the bench in 2020, she served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where she held various positions, including Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division (2012-2020), Deputy Chief and then Chief of the White Plains Division (2008-2012), and Deputy Chief of the Appeals Unit in the Criminal Division (2006-2008).  She also served as the United States Attorney’s Office’s first Elder Justice Coordinator and as an in-house advisor on ethics issues.

Judge Gujarati has been a member of various professional boards and committees.  She also served as an Adjunct Professor of Clinical Law at New York University School of Law (2015-2018).
