Jimmie Allen Scores Fourth Career No. 1 With ‘Down Home’: ‘To Every Person That Listened To This Song, Thank You’

Jimmie Allen stepped into 2023 with a great achievement already under his belt. He not only earned his fourth career No. 1, but also claimed Country radio’s first No. 1 of 2023 with his sentimental song, “Down Home.” 

Serving as the leading track on Allen’s Third full-length project, Tulip Drive, “Down Home” was released in March 2022 via Stoney Creek Records/BBR Music Group. It showcases some of Allen’s most honest emotions as it acts as an open letter to his late father James, who passed away in 2019.

After learning of this recent accolade, he took to social media to share a few words of gratitude for all those who have guided him along the way and ultimately, played a part in helping him reach this achievement.

His caption read, “Dear Dad, I knew you existed and now the world knows too. Thank you to Country radio for helping me share the memory of my father through this song. My [co-writers] Cameron Bedell, Tate Howell and Rian Ball, I’m thankful to y’all for pushing me to do this song but I also thank you for being patient and writing it with me when I was emotionally ready.”

He then went on to thank his loyal fans and reveal what it means to him to see this personal song touch so many others who have lived through a similar experience. 

“To every person that listened to this song, thank you,” he continued. “I read every message about how this song related to you and the person you lost. I’m sending love and peace your way in dealing with your loss.”

Allen opens the song imagining how his dad is probably spending his time in the afterlife making new friends, fishing, and sharing his jokes with everyone. Once the chorus hits, the country star divulges both his sense of pride and a deep sadness at the same time as he starts to fill him in on everything that’s happening while he’s not around. 

“Oh, you know mama’s still cooking / Them down home grits / I promise I’m working / With this guitar ’bout as hard as I can / I met a girl, bought a house / Put a nice little payment, down home / Is still there where my heart is / This down home kid is just how you left him / I still hate that you’re gone, I wish you were here / But I hope I’m making you proud / ‘Cause I know you’re up there looking down home,” Allen reflects in the chorus.

Allen got the chance to celebrate this achievement while co-hosting the 2023 New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash on CBS alongside Elle King and Rachel Smith. During the night, he also performed his latest song to reach the top on the Country Aircheck/ Mediabase charts.

The year has just begun for the Delaware native. Next up, he will return to the road as a special guest for all dates of the 2023 leg of Carrie Underwood’s The Denim & Rhinestones Tour. This 43-date trek kicked off in October and will resume on February 2 in Miami, FL. Together, they are slated to hit over 20 stops in cities including New York City, Los Angeles and Nashville before wrapping up on March 17 in Seattle, WA.

Following this set of shows, Allen will have the honor of returning to Delaware State University as the keynote commencement speaker for the undergraduate ceremony on May 12.

“Delaware State University is where I am proud to say I attended. I met lifetime friends there and learned so much about who I am as a Black man, and navigating my way through life,” Allen explained. “I’m honored to be the keynote speaker and hope I can share something that will inspire the next generation of leaders. Thank you to President [Tony] Allen and the rest of the DSU family for having me. Let’s go HORNETS!!”
