I made an on-line booking at the Hollywood and Highland Hostel and Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles.

Arriving after a 28 hour bus ride from San Antonio, Texas, I was greeted at the top of the stairs with a curt ''We don't take anyone over 35''. It is a long time since I saw 35, but the same could be said of him,the owner/manager addressing me.

I replied that I had a booking and this was not a condition on the booking form. "It's there, I wrote it myself'', he said.

Getting annoyed at this treatment I said ''So you are going to refund my deposit and additional expenses and turf me out on the street at 10.00 o'clock at night. A great welcome to a great city!''

After a few more exchanges he relented and said ''Okay for one night only''. I thanked him for his hospitality and accepted the room for a much needed sleep.

But before turning in I checked the application form. And yes, at the end of the third paragraph listing attractions around Hollywood and a list of amenities in the hostel and various conditions was the note about no one accepted over 35 on the page titled Additional Information.

Having stayed in hundreds of hostels and hotels around the world this was a first, though I tend not to read small print and Additional Information.I left in the morning for a much more welcoming stay at HI Santa Monica.

Well located, cheap but basic. staff are great but it’s a backpacker hostel so be aware it’s fairly basic, the breakfast was ok we had toast cereal and coffee. We had a 4 bed room but had it to ourselves which was good. We only stayed one night and was fine for 1 night

The place is not that spacious the rooms there is not AC, the building is very old needs to be remodeled. I think the whole problem of the place is the Manager, he is the nastiest person he is rude to the staff and to the customers

I finally arrived at this hostel after a struggle finding it due to inaccurate directions that not so much implied, more or less stated outright that it was on the opposite side of the street from where it actually was. I walked up the steep flight of stairs, and after being directed to the reception room (which is rather curiously placed and not immediately obvious upon entering) I waited to be served behind a large group of about 6 or 8 travellers- while an extremely young and unconfident receptionist worked at the pace of a slow loris that's recovering from an anaesthetic to serve this extremely large group. When she had (finally) finished serving the whole lot of them, rather than moving on to serve my patient self, she proceeded to 'show them to their room'. Um... in EVERY hostel and hotel I have stayed in before, the receptionist trusts that the guests are intelligent enough to find their own rooms. So she goes away with the entire group, leaving me alone awkwardly in the reception room for several moments while she shows them to their room. She finally returns and I ask to check in. She then tells me I need to pay a $10 cash in hand deposit for my room key. (I wouldn't have minded but the details on the booking site said nothing about this so I hadn't withdrawn the necessary cash.) I say I don't have the cash on me and she says I will have to find the nearest ATM, which is in the liquor store below. I go back down the stairs to the liquor store to make the withdrawal, then go back up the stairs to find... an empty reception. The girl is nowhere to be seen. After several moments she finally reappears; I give her $20 in cash (the ATM only gave me $20 notes) and she scrambles for some time in the drawers for change before telling me she doesn't have the change. By this time I'm getting extremely irritated (not to mention I've been bursting for the toilet this whole time) so I tell her not to worry about it, just keep the $20. She says she will find me the change, and leaves me alone in the room... again... for several moments. She finally returns with the change, gives me the key and checks me in. She then says she will 'show me my room' (the hostel's so damn tiny I don't know why the staff have this instruction) and takes me to a room just two doors down from the reception. She then insists on giving me the 'guided tour' of the hostel. I ask how long this will take, she says not long and gives me the aforementioned tour- which consisted of her standing outside the reception door and gesturing in various directions to signal where each facility is. (Surely just telling me would have been sufficient enough?)

After this I am finally left to go to my room (and finally get to use the toilet) but I find myself in the smelliest, shabbiest, dirtiest, most unkempt hostel room I've ever seen, in a place that clearly doesn't employ cleaning staff. The room is tiny and incredibly cramped, with hardly any space between the beds. I have been given sheets for the mattress but they don't fit the mattress and I end up just sleeping on them instead. The only air conditioning is one large fan but that alone is not enough in the sweltering heat of LA, and the whole place feels like a sauna both day and night. There seems to be no security, with the rooms frequently left unlocked, and given that the reception is often empty and the door on the street wide open (in an area with a high concentration of homeless junkies, who we could hear fighting on the street outside) anyone could get in off the street and steal from/cause trouble in the place. Although there are bathrooms, the bathroom facilities are the worst I've encountered anywhere- broken equipment, dirt everywhere and a complete lack of soap. After one rough night in the intense heat, and after hearing from other residents that dodgy characters frequently come in from off the street and cause trouble, thefts are not uncommon and the manager is apparently some shady gangster type who frequently yells abuse at the guests and his staff, I decide enough is enough, I'm not risking my safety and my belongings under this roof a moment longer, and I book a better hostel down the road, pack my bags and check out early. The kid who's on reception this time (more confident than the girl but seemingly a mere slave to the shady manager) is not surprised at all that I'm leaving early, indicating it happens all the time. He is very apologetic and says he would jump to give me a full refund if he could, but he is not allowed and has to abide by the no refunds policy. By this time I'm happy to cut my losses though- anything to get out of this godforsaken hellhole.

It's no surprise at all to read other reviews and see that other travellers have also had the same experience and checked out early from this dump. Given that it seemingly happens every day, this place is pretty much a criminal establishment, robbing unsuspecting travellers of their money by taking it all when they check in and then refusing to refund them when they check out early after seeing how diabolical the place is. I know we don't exactly expect luxury accommodation when booking cheap hostels, but this place is just ridiculous, there's no management or security, they care zero about their staff and their guests, the place is dangerous and little more than a seedy hovel run by crooks out to fleece the public.

In short: STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS DREADFUL EXCUSE FOR A HOSTEL. There's a lot of much nicer hostels in the Hollywood area (I went and stayed instead at USA Hostels down the road which was brilliant). This place is beyond the very bottom of the barrel, it's the deepest, darkest recesses any place could sink to, and needs to be closed down by the authorities without delay!

TRAVELLERS BEWARE. I never leave reviews on places i stay, but this cannot go unnoticed. Not only are ALL of the staff incredibly rude, the whole establishment is 'dodgy'. We booked to be in a room of 4, however upon arrival we were split up due to PERMANENT RESIDENTS living in the hostel ( which is ILLEGAL). My friends and I had multiple items stolen, when the staff were confronted about the issue they gave no assistance whatsoever (as if to assume this was a regular occurrence). Please please please do not be tempted by the cheap price, pay a little extra because it's not a nice place to stay in whatsoever. I really can't understand the people on this site who are praising it. The ONLY and I repeat ONLY positive thing about this place is that it on the boulevard. When travelling it is essential to have WI-FI. This hostel advertised WI-FI but they didn't have it at all. This is an essential part of travelling (as many of you are aware). We had to succumb to using the local McDonalds WI-FI multiple times a day.

- The staff don't care
- Theft
- Poor facilities
- Dodgy establishment

Good location and nice man at the reception, but that was it.

Rooms were poor, matresses were completely torn apart and stuff kept falling from the matress above (4 bed room with bunk beds) onto my face.

Dirty kitchen, no wifi, no breakfast.

Checked out first thing in the morning after one night with no sleep at all (freaky people staying there...)

This place is absolutely horrible. It appears as though they'll allow any homeless person in there. I can imagine how unsafe anyone would feel living here even temporarily. The management is rude and demeaning.

After taking a look at this place I decided it was not for me or anyone for that matter. I found a much better place just down the street.

You really get what you pay for with this hostel. There were 8 beds in my hostel and I had a top bunk, which was surprisingly comfortable, only the frame was old and extremely loud even if i moved a muscle. In my room there was no electric plug sockets so the hostel was running a cable between my room and another room, but the adapter they used only had 4 plugs and couldn't reach the top bunks so I couldn't charge anything while I was there (that and my roommates at the time were pretty selfish). Breakfast was what you'd expect. Each room had it's own bathroom, only my bathroom was just outside the room which meant people from other rooms would use it. It was dirty and there was no cold water but again, you get what you paid for.
It is in a good location right on Hollywood Blvd and a 30 second walk to lots of attractions and food places and In-N-Out is nearby if you want to try that. However, this also means it is loud outside and with it being so hot in the room the window needs to be open.
I was travelling to LA alone and on a budget and so for me this hostel was perfect. Cheap enough, good location and a bed. However I wouldn't stay here again because I just felt uncomfortable and in the future i'd rather spend the extra $10 and get a cleaner hostel, where electricity is provided and easy to use for all visitors.

I travelled the U.S.A all summer 2016 and stayed at 14 hostels across the country and this was the strangest and most unfriendly. I was on a budget so decided to stay here after staying at the Hollywood Walk of Fame hostel only a few blocks South (which is a good hostel but more expensive).
Upon arriving at the hostel the receptionist was actually very friendly and good at her job however the place is a dive and after she showed my around the hostel I quickly figured why it was so cheap compared to others - very unclean!
The location is good, but it's full of crackheads camped outside the hostel often begging and trying to get into the hostel which is very poorly secured I might add. The location of the Hollywood walk of fame hostel is far superior and more central to the entertainment on Hollywood Blvd.
The dorms were awful. Most hostels in the U.S.A have good, clean and acceptable rooms and beds however this one was a mess. I was in a four bed dorm and in the two nights I stayed there wasn't any cleaning done despite the room having an awful smell and looking like a bomb had hit it. The beds were pitiful, hideously squeaky and have zero protection bars on the side of the top bunk to stop you falling off during your sleep. I was on the top bunk and was a little apprehensive about dropping off and falling face first 6 feet during the night. Very poor.
The staff in the hostel were strange, on my last morning at the hostel the staff were having a huge domestic argument with each other. No management or leadership hostel was evident. Half of the people working here looked like crackheads - I'm not sure if homeless people had actually just snuck in acted as workers.
The worst thing was there was no lock on the doors, and furthermore no lockers for your bags or suitcases in the rooms and when you see the staff, the people trying to get in and some of the absolute weirdo's that stay there you realise this is very very bad. Judging by the reviews on here I'm surprised I wasn't robbed. I genuinely believe a random thief could walk in, walk into a dorm, take your suitcase, walk out and the staff wouldn't know or care. The security alone makes it a no go.

Here's my advice fellow backpackers - Pay extra and go to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Hostel. Better rooms, people, events, activities and far far safer.

A nice small hostel located right on the walk of fame. You can walk to the major sight + both the bus and the subway are very close (I could go the Santa Monica, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Getty Center, LACMA and more...) Woman at the reception was really nice and helpful (gave me a tour of the hostel, didn't want the change I should've given, let me take a shower after check-out...). Cool free breakfast with PB, jam, toast, cereals, tea, that's always appreciated. There is a supermarket right across the street to buy cheap food. Fresh linens (free). Ultra clean bathrooms. Cheap (for LA)! Thank you!
Negative aspects : our tub was clogged, very old and noisy beds, no locker
I would definitely come back

Lockers not safe when you consider the aspect... Some were clearly forced open, others do not have any way to close it ;) But if you want to use them, bring your lock

do yourself a favor and don't even booked at this hostile. Go to the Walk of Fame hostel just down the street as it is much cleaner and there are no homeless people living in there. You'll be much safer.

Good morning! Do you mean air conditioner? Unfortunately no, but we'll give a fan if you need it. Regards,
Los Angeles, California
Hi. Thank you for your interest in our hostel. Yes it is ok to leave your luggage in our office before check in. It is okay to check out around 5m just turn in your key to the front desk the day before your check out and let them know where your bedsheets are so they can pick it up the next day. The only deposit is the key deposit for the room which is $10.00. But you get the deposit back when you check out. Let us know if you have any other questions. We look forward to hosting you soon.
