This is a great show . Sadly, I believe that fewer and fewer critics can follow subtlety. Some people seem to think Cleese is pretending to be kindly. I seem him as the same crusty person who's learnt a little restrain and is subtle. He is clearly trying to serve the interests of Edith and would love to throw off all her idiot children. Every strange plot turn makes sense, which is very hard to pull off. The humour is straight-faced and quietly absurd. One of the best (Brit) comedies to come along for a long time. It hasnt the wild wackiness of Fawlty Towers but is a lot less held together with sticky tape and glue. It is appropriate for intelligent people in their mature years who remember humour. I wish it ws on again, It throws off cliches and has original plots and characters. The characters, awful as they may be, are quite believable in their respective selfishness, incompetence, innocence, soft-heartedness, laziness, deceptiveness, outright looniness, and foolishness. But all these are played with some subtlety.

I love Hold the Sunset! It's one of my few favorite modern television shows and is filled with some of my favorite actors! Was stoked to see series 2 was available on Britbox.

I'm a huge British sitcom fan and don't watch any American shows: I suspect my perspective will differ from others for that reason. I fell hard and fast for this show. I am in love with the cast and to my supreme and endless joy Sue Johnston [Waking the Dead, The Royle Family, and Jam and Jerusalem] showed up in season two. She is brilliant in every show she is in, and every show she is in is brilliant. The plot is simply about a boomerang kid [Jason Watkins] who messes up his widowed mother's [Alison Steadman] plans to move to a sunny location with her boyfriend and longtime friend [John Cleese]. I love the storylines: the plot is constant [will they ever get there?] and the theme of each episode moves in and around it. Each episode is different: they are sunny, cheery, decidedly not dramatic or anti-climactic, and a darn good chuckle. The writing is matched perfectly with the fantastic cast. This is British living, not American drama. It's sarcastic, dry and real. From the normal people with purposefully wrinkled shirts, to the wrinkled faces which show decades of great acting. It's not lovey dovey and everyone getting along. It's family, it's parsimonious. I only wish there were many more seasons.

Totally abysmal, I watched the first season, waiting for it to get better - or to show any humour at all
It has not got any, none, it is minus humour. It may be a programme written/directed/ produced by people who had their hands tied ... maybe blindfolded ... possibly suffering from sensory deprivation ... Where ever I find reviews we are all wondering how such a appears just as bad and I have given up hopewonderful cast could be made to look so turgid. Watched 1st 4 minutes of 2nd season ...

This could have been a dark comedy, but the writing is just terrible. Great actors all, they've been put into situations that are either extremely bland or extremely exaggerated. The son going through a midlife crisis is a sad caricature of a child, nothing at all real about him... so much so, it's hard to believe he ever got married or held a real job with any responsibilities. The older mother is written to just be accepting of everything, and Cleese is written as just plain bland. There are attempts at biting retorts, but they all come off as forced. Even at the very beginning where Cleese is arguing with a neighbor about his dog, it's just way too long and forced of a scene with no real comedy to it. It's extremely unfortunate, because all of these actors can be incredible but with this writing it's a lost cause. It's just truly disappointing and sad from every angle.
