elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the first day of the 2022 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

After the challenges of recent times, we are delighted to welcome representatives from around the globe to one of the highlights of the summer sporting and social season. This year a plethora of international runners adds to the spirited occasion. Today’s feature race, the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, looks to be a thrilling spectacle worthy of the race’s illustrious heritage. Stradivarius, one of the most decorated stayers of all time is set to bring the curtain down on his glittering career in the race. The two-mile stayers’ race, which carries a prize fund of £500,000, sees the John Gosden-trained star look to re-write the history books by winning a fifth Goodwood Cup, a feat unlikely to be surpassed. The eight-year-old boasts a remarkable record comprising 20 wins from 34 appearances, including 18 Group-race victories – eclipsing the European record. Another of the highlights on the first day of the meeting is the £300,000 Group 2 Qatar Lennox Stakes, which will see some of the very best seven-furlong specialists go head-tohead. Arguably the most prestigious race over this distance in the country, the Lennox has grown in stature over the years, and this afternoon’s race looks hugely competitive. Aside from the racing, the fashion stakes will be high. The prestigious Goodwood Talent in Fashion award sees British Fashion Designer, Molly Goddard showcase three gorgeous outfits exclusively curated for Goodwood. They will be worn by models circulating the racecourse throughout the afternoon. We are incredibly grateful to today’s race sponsors, Qatar, Coral, South Downs Water, and the European Breeders Fund, for their generous support of the fixture. With eight races to enjoy, I hope you have a wonderful day here at Goodwood.

The Duke of Richmond & Gordon 3

Glorious Goodwood

The first Duke of Richmond’s father, King Charles II loved horse racing and the Duke was famously conceived during a house party where everyone was staying for racing at Newmarket. ‘Match’ racing between two horses was a fashionable sport enjoyed by the early Dukes on the Harroway, the open stretch of land on the South Downs above Goodwood. In 1801, the third Duke of Richmond held a private race meeting for the Sussex Militia. The event was such a success that the following year he held Goodwood’s first public race meeting. The Goodwood meeting took place every summer from then on, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the meeting was dubbed by the press – become part of the English social season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously dubbed the meeting ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The Goodwood meeting became the final fling of the season before everyone departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the late (tenth) Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

5

Lord George Bentinck, a popular figure at Goodwood, commissioned the first ever horsebox to take his horse, Elis, in secret from Goodwood to Doncaster to win the 1836 St. Leger.

6

In 1827, the fifth Duke of Richmond had his first classic success with Gulnare in the Oaks. The horse is seen here with his trainer John Kent and jockey in the Richmond racing colours.

Fashion Inspired By Goodwood’s Heritage

Molly Goddard is the winner of this year’s Goodwood Talent in Fashion Award, in association with the British Fashion Council. Known for her ethereal creations in signature tulle, combining volume and construction with a sense of fun and frivolity, Molly’s eponymous label was first created in 2014. She has since collected a plethora of prizes and has dressed everyone from the infamous Villanelle in Killing Eve to pop star Rihanna and model and activist Adwoa Aboah. On a recent visit Molly said “Upon arrival, it was immediately apparent how special Goodwood is – I was shown into the main house through a room filled floor to ceiling with beautiful Sèvres porcelain. The three gowns I have created are inspired by the incredible art collection and interiors of Goodwood House and I am immensely proud that my work will become a part of this amazing collection.” The award, now in its second year, was created to recognise home-grown British talent. Last year’s winner Richard Quinn set the bar by creating three spectacular dresses and the three show-stopping gowns designed by Molly will be revealed for the first time today, during the Opening Ceremony of The Qatar Goodwood Festival. The Duke of Richmond said; “Molly is renowned for her lavish and flamboyant designs using bright and joyful colours. Goodwood has always been known for its quintessentially ‘England in the Summer’ way of dressing, ever since King Edward VII and Lillie Langtry came racing during the 19th century, and we’re thrilled that Molly’s gowns will become part of our fashion legacy.” The Goodwood Talent in Fashion Award is held every year with the winning designer selected by a panel of judges including The Duke of Richmond, Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council, Sian Westerman, Non-Executive Director, British Fashion Council and Lydia Slater, Editor of Harper’s Bazaar. The pieces are kept at Goodwood House and form part of the Goodwood Collection.

Race Summary LEGEND OF DUBAI was a beaten favourite in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot having been well supported after impressing in a Newmarket handicap in April. The four-year-old remains open to further improvement, especially stepping up to 1m2f. Bell Rock has been running creditably all season and is of interest back in handicap company with Harry Davies taking a valuable 5lb off, while others to note include Etonian, Brilliant Light and Soto Sizzler.

Race Summary Holloway Boy shed the maiden tag in emphatic style, landing the Chesham Stakes on his racecourse debut last month. The son of Ulysses could take an immediate step forward and demands the utmost respect, though marginal preference is for GALERON. The Charlie Hills-trained colt got the better of an impressive subsequent winner at this venue last time out and he can continue his ascendancy. Mysterious Night may improve for the step up in trip and could mount a bold bid.

Race Summary Three-year-olds do not have the best record in this contest, but LUSAIL may be able to buck the trend if he can repeat his St James's Palace form, when he finished a head second to 2000 Guineas winner Coroebus. He deserves his first victory of the season and may prove too good for Platinum Jubilee fifth Sacred, with Happy Power a lively each-way alternative having finished a close-up third to Kinross in this race last year.

Danger: Sacred

Win: LUSAIL

Today ’s Feature the al shaqab goodwood cup

The Goodwood Cup is one of the oldest events in the racing calendar. The £500,000 Group 1 race was established in 1812 when it was run over three miles. It is open to three-year-olds and upwards. The distance was reduced to two miles in 1833 and has remained the same since. It is widely regarded as a real test of stamina. Its glittering role of honour is illuminated with the names of some of the sport’s most celebrated stayers, among them the amazing Double Trigger, who carved himself a piece of racing history by becoming the first and only horse to win the Goodwood Cup three times in 1995, 1997 and 1998. Other notable winners during the nineteenth century were the supremely tough and talented filly Virago in 1854 and the unbeaten St Simon, widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time, who left an indelible mark on the race in 1884. The race has been successfully targeted by several overseas-trained horses, the most charismatic of which was the Hungarian-bred mare Kincsem, who was unbeaten in 54 races and won the Goodwood Cup in 1878. There have been many outstanding dual winners of this race in recent times, including Persian Punch (2001/2003) – whose ashes were scattered at Goodwood, Yeats (2006/2008), and Big Orange (2015/2016). In last year’s race, it was Trueshan who scored under Hollie Doyle, providing a breakthrough Group 1 success for trainer Alan King. Stradivarius was a late absentee in the contest last year. Still, this time he looks to secure an unprecedented fifth Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup for trainer John Gosden and owner Bjorn Nielson. He first won the race in 2017 under jockey Andrea Atzeni before going onto success in 2018, 2019, and 2020 – a remarkable feat.

2021 WINNER: TRUESHAN (FR) 5 9 9 Hollie Doyle 6-5 (Alan King) 8 ran

STEWARDS NOTED: PRINCESS ZOE:Following its run on 16/6/2022 it was reported that the horse suffered interference in running.

Race Summary Trueshan will be difficult to oppose if ground conditions deteriorate, but with that far from certain, the vote goes to KYPRIOS. The son of Galileo was a game winner of the Gold Cup, where he had an arguably unfortunate Stradivarius in behind. The Gosdens' star stayer has lifted this prize four times and may finish closer to his Ascot conqueror, granted more luck in running. Coltrane took another step forward when bolting up to claim Listed honours at Sandown and is another to consider.

Win: KYPRIOS

Danger: Stradivarius

2021 WINNER: LORD RIDDIFORD (IRE) 6 8 6 Hollie Doyle 13-2 (John Quinn) 12 ran

STEWARDS NOTED: EQUALITY:Following its run on 9/7/2022 it was reported that the horse began slowly and hung left handed. STONE OF DESTINY:Following its run on 9/7/2022 it was reported that the horse was restless in the stalls.

Plenty with chances here, but EQUALITY shaped better than the bare result at Ascot last time, and off 2lb lower today, Charlie Hills' sprinter should go close. Celsius goes for the hat-trick and although he is 5lb higher than for his latest Newmarket success, he can't be ruled out in his current form. Lord Riddiford is now 1lb lower than for his last triumph, which came in this contest 12 months ago, and is fully capable of making the frame.

Danger: Celsius

Win: EQUALITY

Race Summary In this fascinating contest preference is for MISCHIEF MAGIC, who gave a good account to finish third over course and distance on his first racecourse outing. That race has been handsomely advertised and he can get off the mark at the second time of asking. Supreme King and Master Of Chant only found one rival too strong on their respective debuts and may be able to take a step forward.

Race Summary CRYSTAL CAPRICE got off the mark in impressive fashion at Yarmouth on her third outing earlier in the month and the daughter of Frankel makes plenty of appeal on her handicap debut. Breaking Light took a big step forward when scoring at Haydock and a 5lb rise is unlikely to stop her from being competitive. System was just denied when upped to a mile at Ascot and she is capable of being in the mix along with Flash Betty, who is of interest dropping in grade.

2021 WINNER: LOVELY BREEZE (IRE) 3 8 8 William Buick 3-1 (Hugo Palmer) 6 ran

STEWARDS NOTED: MAKAROVA:Following its run on 30/6/2022 it was reported that the horse suffered interference.

Race Summary Preference is for the unexposed KIDWAH. Having won over this distance on her first two appearances, she perhaps failed to stay 7f at Newmarket earlier this month, though she wasn't disgraced in third. William Haggas' charge remains on the same mark and could be set for a return to winning ways. Crazy Luck ought to throw down a stern challenge in her hat-trick bid. Others to consider are Kimngrace, Makarova and Lovely Breeze.

Danger: Crazy Luck
