Bones found in Chatham landfill identified as those of missing toddler Quinton Simon

The FBI Laboratory Division confirmed via press release on Monday that the bones found in the Superior Landfill on Little Neck Road are those of missing 20-month-old Quinton Simon. A multi-agency team of investigators found the partial remains at the landfill on Nov. 18.

Chatham County Police arrested the child's mother Leilani Simon, 22, on Nov. 21, and charged her with malice murder, concealing the death of another, making a false report and making false statements in connection with the disappearance of her son.

On Nov. 23, Leilani Simon waived her right to a bond hearing.

Quinton Simon was reported missing to CCPD by Leilani on Oct. 5. On Oct. 12, CCPD named Leilani as the prime suspect in Quinton's disappearance. On Oct. 18, CCPD and FBI started searching the landfill.

The five-week landfill search was expansive, made up of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Chatham County Police, FBI, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources also "provided invaluable technical insights" and forensic anthropologists from Georgia Southern University were "on site everyday verifying any potential human finds," according to the FBI press release.

Authorities officially stopped searching the landfill on Nov. 28 and began removing command post facilities from L. Scott Stell Park.

The Quinton Simon case and the legal proceedings against his mother are now in the hands of the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office.
