Daughter of Sir Richard Temple, 3rd Baronet; younger sister of Field Marshal Richard Temple, 1st Viscount Cobham. Lord Cobham was a lifelong bachelor, so his Viscountcy was made with a Special Remainder, firstly to Hester and her heirs male, and secondly to his second younger sister Christian Lyttelton. Christian's heirs would inherit the Viscountcy after 1889.

Hester became 2nd Viscountess Cobham in 1749; that same year she was created Countess Temple in her own right.

Her elder son would inherit the Earldom from his mother. Her second son George Grenville became Prime Minister of Great Britain.
