Tips
  • At 542 meters, the Hermannskogel is the highest mountain in Vienna. Located on the border with Lower Austria, it can be reached quickly from Döbling, Vienna's 19th district. It is definitely worthwhile to come up here in autumn or winter. If the view is not clouded by fog, you can enjoy a beautiful view over Vienna.

  • From the platform you have a wonderful view of the city of Vienna and the Vienna Woods. And all for just one euro

  • The detour is worth it, because you certainly have a great view of the area. Even though Vienna is a huge city, the sight from above with all the green around it has a certain appeal. The control room is not always open. Even if you get there and it has closed, it is worth the way, because you can make a nice break here. There are tables and benches and the building is worth seeing!

  • From the Heurigenort Sievering to the highest mountain in Vienna: In the past, the excursion with the Stellwagen to Sievering and the subsequent hike were very popular, later you took the tram and today the city bus struggles through the narrow streets of the Heurigenort.
On the city hiking trail 2 you soon reach the Vienna Woods and - after a strenuous climb - also the highest mountain in Vienna, the Hermannskogel. Overall, this hiking trail in the Vienna Woods is very rewarding.

  • The Hermannskogel (542 meters) is the highest mountain in Vienna. The circular walk from the Grüaß di a Gott-Wirt at the crossroads Höhenstraße-Sieveringer Straße on the Hermannskogel to Jägerwiese and through the forest back already create the four-year-old children without grumbling. However, not without passing through the forest in between, watching beetles and gathering sticks

  • Also on New Year's Eve the Habsburgs is sometimes open. Ask the ÖTK beforehand. The view is sensational.

  • In the 19th century, the monastery of Klosterneuburg, which owns the Hermannskogel, tried to build a viewing platform on its summit, but did not receive permission. From 1877 the Austrian Tourist Club maintained a wooden viewing platform at this point. On March 15, 1883, the ÖTK decided to erect a stone building. On June 23, 1884, Emperor Franz Joseph I approved the name Habsburg-Warte for the construction, on November 18, 1887 the building permit was granted. The Austrian Tourist Club donated the Habsburg Watchtower on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I (1888).

The K. k. Military Geographic Institute should use the tower as a fundamental (main triangulation) point. In 1888 the tower was designed by architect Franz von Neumann jun. built in Romanesque-Gothic hybrid forms. The keystone was set on November 19, 1888, the name day of Empress Elisabeth. After the completion of the interior, the Habsburgwarte was opened and inaugurated on October 6, 1889 in the presence of Archduke Karl Ludwig (brother of Emperor Franz Joseph and protector of the ÖTK) and Prelate Ubald Kostersitz of Klosterneuburg Abbey. In 1892 it officially began to be used as the main point of the Austrian triangulation network. In 1938, the National Socialists forced the renaming to "Hermannskogelwarte".

In 1945 the columned loggia on the first floor was destroyed by artillery fire. In 1947 it was restored with the help of NIOGAS (today EVN), which has been using the tower as a directional radio station and remote measuring point since 1960. With the decision of September 13, 1972, the Federal Monuments Office placed the Habsburg-Warte under monument protection. On October 8, 1974, the ÖTK decided to exclusively use the historical name Habsburgwarte again.

  • Easy paths, but the downhills can be bit tricky. Would recommend boots, but you can definitely get away with regular hiking/sports shoes.

  • If you ask the Viennese about the highest elevation in Vienna, many answer with "the Kahlenberg". No, it's not like that! Not the Kahlenberg with an altitude of 484 meters is the highest point in the city of Vienna, but the Hermannskogel. It towers 58 m above the Kahlenberg and is 542 meters above sea level! On the Hermannskogel there is a rather unknown vantage point, but on closer inspection it is very impressively enthroned on the summit of the Hermannskogel. It's the Habsburg Warden. It was built in the form of a medieval defense tower in 1888 and, including the spire, rises 27 meters into the sky. If you stand in front of her and look up at her, you feel transported to the Middle Ages for a moment. On the viewing platform of the round tower at 16.7 meters is the fundamental point of the Austrian national survey, which was determined in 1892 by the Imperial and Royal Military Geographical Institute.

  • Starting from Klosterneuburg, the hike on the Hermannskogel is very easy and problem-free. Nice walk.
Once at the top, you can go up the tower for 1 euro! The costs are definitely worth it 😊. Awesome view over Vienna on one side ... to the Schneeberg and even to the Ötscher (in good weather) on the other side 👍

  • We deviated from Standwanderweg 2 to get up here. The path is beautiful because it is very narrow. You can also climb up to the Habsburgwarte. But since the weather wasn't that great and time was pressing, we decided against it.
