Herbert Hoover Jr. Dies at Age of 65

PASADENA (UPI) - Herbert Hoover Jr., eldest son of the 31st president and undersecretary of state during the Eisenhower Administration, died Wednesday at the age of 65. Hoover, a consulting engineer and petroleum expert, died at Huntington Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He died of natural causes, his family said. Before he was sworn in as undersecretary, Hoover served John Foster Dulles as a troubleshooter in the Middle East and worked at mending the dispute between Great Britain and Iran over the nationalization of British nil concessions. Hoover became Undersecretary of State on Oct. 4. 1954. His father, then 80, watched the {ceremony. Like his father, Hoover was a Republican. Hoover was graduated from his father’s alma mater, Stanford University, in 1925 and obtained a degree from the Harvard University School of Business Administration. As an oil exploration engineer, he worked for the governments of Iran, Peru, Venezuela. Chile and Brazil. Hoover was a longtime resident of California. He founded the United Geophysical Co. in Pasadena and remained as its president when it was acquired by Union Oil Co. He made his home in nearby San Marino. His hobby was amateur radio —he became a ‘‘ham’’ at age 12 —and as president of the International Amateur Radio union he appeared at a congressional hearing to urge the United States not to discriminate against foreign hams.

Private funeral services were scheduled Monday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena. Hoover is survived by his widow, Margaret, a son, Herbert III, two daughters. Mrs. Peggy Ann Brigham of West Chester, Pa., and Mrs. John Vowles of Sunnyvale, Calif., and a brother, Alan of Greenwich, Conn.
