On March 17, 1776- Boston’s Evacuation Day: The British abandon Boston, sailing to Nova Scotia. Henry Knox dragged the cannon from Fort Ticonderoga through snow and sleet. George Washington surprised the British by mounting the guns on the hills overlooking Boston. Once the Americans captured Dorchester Heights, they could bombard any part of the city. The British left, but soon were back.
