Henry was the son of Isaac and Ann or Nancy Staple of Banwell, Somerset, England. He was baptized at St. Andrew's Church in Banwell on January 19, 1817 .Isaac's occupation was listed as a cordwainer. Isaac is believed to have been born in 1777, probably in that area and buried February 25, 1819 in St. Andrews Cemetery.

Isaac and Ann/ Nancy had the following known children:

James James born in Banwell in 1800.

Charles James baptized January 23, 1803.

Phoebe James born in Banwell in 1805. Married James Hacker.

John James born in Banwell in 1808.

Ann James born in Banwell in 1809.

Mary James baptized June 28, 1812.

George James born in Banwell in 1814.

Henry James born in Banwell in 1816.

Henry and his family came from England in April, 1842 on the Ship Bark Deuse from Bristol and were early settlers in Clintonville. He was a prosperous landowner and landlord. His wife was Harriett Weaver James and he was father to William, an Onondaga County District Attorney in the 1870's. He was father to Albert, a Civil War soldier buried in this cemetery, and to Henry Isaac James and Ellen James Withey.
After the death of Harriett, he married again to Mrs. Rosina Charlotte VanBuskirk, born Jan. 1836, widow of one James VanBuskirk. She married Henry about August 10, 1885 in Amber, Onondaga, N.Y. She outlived Henry and is believed to have died in Ogdensburg, N.Y. in late 1902.Rosina(or Charlotte) VanBuskirk was listed in the 1860 census for Lafayette, N.Y. with husband James, and the following children:
Emetta, Dewitt (who died in 1901) and Selah.
