Isn't it nice to not have this at the Kardinia Lawn ball green.

Cats are probably too powerful, but we won't be as poor defensively as Carlton were.
I just don't think we can kick 80 points against Geelong.

And unlikely we will be as accurate as we were V Blues - and Blues missed some gimmie shots.

And Tomma needs a bigger one.. he's played his role for sure but his time to get off the chain is here - tough against May and Lever however.

GO Catters

Playing the top team but we have far too many players out of form at the moment (Petracca, Oliver, Viney, Petty, Van Rooyen) to name a few. May and Lever will clamp Cameron and Hawkins but it'll be guys like Gryan Miers or Henry that combine for 6 goals. I predict a loss but I have no fear factor playing Geelong. I think our mids smack theirs when we're even playing average footy. But we're playing poor footy at the moment.

Not to nitpick, but a few days ago weren't you saying you thought Geelong were/would be about the 5th-7th best side this season? Wouldn't that side be one that a premiership contender should beat on their home deck?

So "playing the top team" was only used in the sense of "technically they are in 1st place" and not "this is actually where I rank them?". Because a few days ago you said Geelong will end up 5th-7th this season. Why do you think you will lose to the 5th-7th best side at home?
the top team on current form yes. or 2nd to gws. it's close.

Clearly Melbourne is out of form. Oliver is still building his way from not having a pre-season, then suffering a broken hand. Petty returning from a serious long term injury, petracca and Viney out of form etc. A lot of our mids time on ground has also been significantly lower than usual and I think our team is being more managed so we're not burnt out come the finals.

Also there's no home ground advantage. There will be as many Geelong fans as dees fans. Much different to if it was at GMHBA.

I actually think you have a point here. You can argue that Geelong's game style actually suits the MCG more than Melbourne's. Also, Melbourne supporters simply do not turn the G into a "hostile cauldron" like the other tenants. It was Geelong's home game last week but the atmosphere resembled playing Collingwood or Richmond in a big final. Demons supporters are fairly gentle folk, and nowhere near as inclined to sook about umpiring.

We've generally been poor supporters at rocking up and being loud.

Also, we've got a few role players out in Bowey and McAdam who I think have been missed. but I recognise Danger is also out who is a much bigger loss.

Melbourne was even with Richmond to half time. We're in terrible form.

I think it'll be a really close match again.

Outside of the prelim final in 2021, these sides love having close matches over the past few years - often dour affairs. The match at GMHBA last season was really close until Geelong pulled away very late.

Melbourne's defence will cope with Geelong's forwards much better than Carlton's did and can still have similar midfield dominance. Gawn is a scary prospect after Pittonet was near-BOG against Stanley.

You'd think Geelong's defence would cope well with Melbourne's forward line but we haven't been afraid to let Melbourne forwards of varying quality get off the chain previously. Petty will go from spud to superstar or something.

Stewart might be back, but could miss another week too. I'll be more confident if he returns to the line up.

I thought Stewart was a guarantee to return. Who will he go to? Fritsch?

Dees are definitely a chance but Brisbane embarrassed us on the mcg so im not hopeful.

We're just not playing well. We chose not to target a key forward in the off-season and now we're paying for it.

I thought so too but someone reminded me that the new concussion management protocols can often extend a player's absence to 2 weeks.

If he does play, I'd expect him to play on a less dangerous forward than Fritsch and peel off.

I would guess Zuthrie to Pickett, SDK to Petty, J.Henry to Van Rooyen and Kolo to Fritsch.

Sounds right. Stewart to Daniel Turner then I'm guessing

Cats should win. They move the ball much better when they slingshot from defence. They wait for turnovers and don't need first use. Melbourne used to be good at clearances, stoppages, etc. but Oliver is the critical factor here and he is not close to being at the level he has been for the past five years. Then again Gawn might just do it himself! He seems like he's on a mission.

Have to give credit to Geelong for their start, ability to adapt and remain competitive over a long period of time.

Our last 2 weeks have been average but our backline has pretty much carried us and think they can do it again in a close one.

I think our back-line is a little better to be honest and that's saying something given you have Lever and May down there.
Melbourne will need to score 90 points to win this. Can't see either side conceding that amount so it probably comes down to the midfield duel. Gawn v Stanley/Conway and then Petracca, Viney, Oliver, Langdon which is as strong as it gets.

After 7 games your backline has conceded 512 points. Melbourne have conceded 464. And that's with you guys playing really well and us playing really poorly.
