Biography

Henry Cromwell was the fourth son of Oliver Cromwell and his wife, Elizabeth Bourchier, born in Huntingdon on 20 January 1628. He was baptised at Huntingdon on 29th. [1] Educated at Felsted School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge he served under his father during the latter part of the Civil War. In 1650, after the execution of Charles I the previous year, Henry accompanied his father to Ireland.

On 10 May 1653 he married Elizabeth Russell, daughter of Francis Russell and his wife, Catherine Wheatley, who bore him five sons and two daughters. Henry returned to Ireland in 1654. In 1657 he advised his father to refuse the office of King. When Oliver Cromwell died on 3 September 1658 [2] Henry welcomed the elevation of his brother, Richard, to the office of Lord Protector. Richard however did not have the stature of his father and the administration fell into chaos. Recalled to England after his brother's fall, Henry resigned his offices.

Unmolested at the Restoration he retired to Spinney Abbey at Wicken in Cambridgeshire where he died on 23 March 1674. Henry was buried at Wicken. [3]

His will leaves everything including the manor of Spinney in Wicken to his wife. [4]

Hi Carol - the England Project would like to co-manage this profile with you to give it some Project oversight and protection as the wrong Elizabeth Cromwell is repeatedly attached to Henry as a daughter. I will send you a Trusted List request directly from the England Project account. If you accept the request then the England Project managers will do the rest! Please contact me directly if you have any questions.

Best wishes, Jo. (England Project Managed Profiles team coordinator).
