NOTE

Hedwig of Schleswig-Holstein (15 July 1626 – 5 October 1678) was the daughter of king Christian IV of Denmark and Kirsten Munk. She was the twin of her sister Christiane Sehested. She shared the title Countess of Schleswig-Holstein with her mother and siblings.

As with her siblings, she was raised by her grandmother Ellen Marsvin. She and her twin were both married in Copenhagen royal palace in 1642: she to the noble Ebbe Ulfeldt. She and her sister Leonora Christina Ulfeldt were the only siblings present at her father's deathbed in 1648. In 1652, her spouse was deposed from his position on Bornholm, and the couple left for the Swedish court. The marriage was unhappy: Ulfeldt abused her - she called him "the damned creature" - and she had an affair with his servant. She separated from him in 1655 and joined her sister Leonora in Pomerania. She was present at her mother's funeral in 1658. She was ruined by her husband's debts, and moved to his estate in Skåne in 1664 out of poverty. She visited her sister Leonora during her imprisonment, corresponded with her and worked for her release.

On 6 Nov. 1642 she married at the Copenhagen Castle, the former land man in Kristianstad, Ebbe Christoffersen Ulfeldt from Ovesholm. She and Leonora Christina were the only ones of the children who were present at Christian IV's death at Rosenborg 28 Febr. 1648. ....Her husband, who ...had lost his Len Bornholm, left in Jan. 1652 Denmark and went to Stockholm, H. followed him there after 2 months... But the relationship between spouses was greatly unhappy. Already during their engagement, in October 1641, is known to have been Disagreement between them, and in Sweden they came on full war footing. Ebbe Ulfeldt was of a brutal nature ...that after using her money up, terrorized her in every way and even threatened her with beatings. Her attitude toward him was in return the most vivid hatred; In a letter she calls him "that damned creature" ...Finally she could not endure it anymore and fled in October 1655 with her older sister Leonora Christina, who at that time lived in the castle Barth in Pommern. From here she went to her mother, Kirstine Munk, she was also present at his funeral in Odense in July 1658...She had to pass or pawn piece by piece to a creditor and lived from 1661-64 in the extreme poverty of Valdemar Castle. In April 1664 she traveled to Scania, where she stayed most of the time on the Ulfeldt farm Raabelev, perhaps later at Ovesholm. In her honor, she showed her unhappy sister Leonora Christina a warm sympathy during her captivity; she corresponded secretly with her, took a while her two youngest sons, and traveled at Frederik III's death in 1670 to Copenhagen to work on her release.
