In the spy-crazed film world of the 1960s, Len Deighton's antihero Harry Palmer burst onto the scene as an antidote to the James Bond films. Here was a British spy who had a working-class accent and horn-rimmed glasses and above all really didn't want to be a spy in the first place. As portrayed by Michael Caine, Palmer was the perfect antithesis to Sean Connery's 007. Unlike that of his globetrotting spy cousin, Palmer's beat is cold, rainy, dreary London, where he spends his days and nights in unheated flats spying on subversives. He does charm one lady, but she's no Pussy Galore, just a civil servant he works with, sent to keep an eye on him. Eventually he's assigned to get to the bottom of the kidnapping and subsequent "brain draining" of a nuclear physicist, all the while being reminded by his superiors that it's this or prison. Things begin to get pretty hairy for Harry. Produced by Harry Saltzman in his spare time between Bond movies, the film also features a haunting score by another Bond veteran, composer John Barry. --Kristian St. Clair

The first of the Harry Palmer spy films starring Michael Caine in the titular role, THE IPCRESS FILE remains one of the best of the 1960s spy genre. A matter-of-fact & understated story that's deliberately the opposite of the enjoyably larger-than-life fantasies of James Bond, it has at least one foot in LeCarre territory, in that it's grittier & captures the often boring aspect of real-life spy work. Yet its plot has a touch of the fantastic, one that could easily be blown up into a Bond film. Still, I'm just as glad that it didn't go that route.

The plot is simple: top minds are being kidnapped, then released—but their memories have been erased & their cognitive abilities have been damaged severely. It's a brain drain in somewhat more subtle & unsettling fashion, one that Palmer is assigned to uncover & stop. But here it's clear that he's quite dispensable & that he can't even trust his own side, as fellow operatives from his section are turning up dead.

And while the story is strong, the film is equally enjoyable for its look at mid-1960s England, capturing so many of the little details of the times. Younger viewers raised on the maniacally-paced action films of the present day may find the pace slow—but that slower pace makes for a richer film, allowing us to get to know Palmer's character, as well as the tone & ambience of his world. In some ways, it's almost a slice-of-life character study, except that this character's day job is that of a spy.

The John Barry score is all you'd want it to be, and this edition also features some welcome extras, including an informative commentary track & an interview with Caine. After more than half a century, it remains a gripping & consistently entertaining film. What more could you want? Highly recommended!

Reading the negative reviews, well it is a generational thing. One has to remember this was a movie made in '65. I'm not an authority but Len Deighton was a spy novelist during the time of Ian Fleming. Michael Caine's character of Harry Palmer was a more realistic "spy" no gadgets just a realistic everyday man in the spy business as a military officer.
Michael Caine was brilliant as Harry Palmer which lead to three other movies. Funeral in Berlin was a fairly well made movie.
This is actually a great whodunit and for the first time viewer it is suspenseful. The ending is Great....who did it????
Ipcress File is one of my favorite as an impressionable teen, as Sean Connery's James Bond. YOUNGER GENERATION people as reviewed find it boring, well it is not your Daniel Craig Jame's Bond super CGI movie. It is a basic spy story with dialogue and Caine is an appealing character.
The Spain bluray was just ok, actually one would be satisfied buying the DVD, but it is hard to come by or far too expensive. It is cumbersome switching to the English, as the default is in Spanish. There is no DTS 5.1 in English? I'm playing it through an OPPO 103, so it should read it. As I reported I luv'd this movie so jus kept it anyway. Hope this helps.

One of the great time capsules of the 1960's spy craze

One of my all time favorite spy thrillers. Michael Caine stars as Harry Palmer, a theif who now works for MI5 and the very unpleasant Colonel Ross played by Guy Doleman. If your looking for the anti-Bond that dosen't have the world weariness and brooding, then you found your man.

The world of Palmer is down to earth; Spying is not depicted as fanastic as being a Double-O, most of your time is consumed by having to do mundane duties like filing out field reports. However nothing about this film is boring, it's colourful in the sense that you know danger and surprises every moment when Palmer is out the field and mistakes can be made like accidentally killing an American agent. The plot also has that down to earth atmosphere but still keeps one's interest, scientists have been kidnapped and returned but they seem not to function in their occupation because of brain washing. When Palmer is captured and attempted to be brain washed it's one of the films' great highlights, truly breaking down the hero always a good move because it means his vitcory would be all the greater.

Ironcially most of the Bond people are behind this film but not in the usual sense; Ken Adam's sets are in no way sci-fi or remotely fantastic in any sense, it's all very much contemporary 1960's. John Barry's score is still quite jazzy but it's a little more subtle, I can't articulate it but you know this is a Barry score for something in the vein of James Bond but not really Bond.

Micheal Caine has Harry Palmer is such a great anti-hero who has a light side to him. As I said before this isn't James Bond who dedicates himself to the secret service, he's only doing intelligence work because the alternative is two years behind bars in a military prison. He knows how to sweet talk the women and he's a bit of a dork, laughing at his own jokes for example. Also he's a great cook and I do believe that is a turn on for most females.

I haven't watched those two Palmer television films from the 90's but I think it's safe to say this is the best film out of the series. Anyone who loves James Bond and is looking for something fun and different should check this film out.

I first saw this movie on TV this summer after trying to find a copy online for years! The movie has amazing cinematography, acting, writing and music, and it has vaulted into my top 5 favourite movies of all time! The Blu-ray has some great extras, including a nice interview with Michael Caine and trailers for the film. The crisp image of the Blu-Ray edition only adds to I my enjoyment. Highly recommended.

Certes Harry Palmer est un agent "secret", certes il aime les femmes et il est insolent. Mais il n'a pas les frais de mission d'un James Bond ni même tous les gadgets et ne saute pas dans un avion a la moindre occasion. Bien que ce soit un film qui a plus de 50 ans et qu'on voit par le style, les plans cameras et tout le décorum que c'est un film de cet âge, il n'a pas pris une seule ride. Excellent scenario, excellente musique ( John Barry ... ), un jeu d'acteur parfait avec des gens de talent. Ipcress est et reste un excellent film et surtout LE film qui a lance la carrière de Michael Caine juste après Zulu. Cerise sur le gâteau : si vous parlez l'anglais et que vous le mettez en version originale, le vocabulaire et le style utilisé tout au long du film est d'une finesse absolue avec un sens de l'humour anglais tel qu'on aime l'humour anglais.

I told a friend how much I had enjoyed my blue ray dvd of The Ipcress File. She made the comment about enjoying seeing the old 60s London buses. I smiled weakly at her sad lack of insight into what is a classic English spy thriller. Four people make this a great film; the director Sidney J Furie, the cinematographer Otto Heller, the composer John Barry and the actor Michael Caine. Harry Palmer is Michael Caine and visa versa. He is not Bond 007 and yet he is. He has the 'Englishness) but his is an Englishness of the average bloke in the street. His spy is the other side of the coin, the corner shop rather than the Monaco Casino, the anonymous flat, the way less glamorous car. It is seedy and 60s and brilliant. Caine is great. So are the camera angles, Heller's skill and furies directing go hand in hand. Barry's musical score dovetails into their view and itall combines to keep you on the edge of your seat. The story about disappearing scientist who turn up brain washed is the closest you get to a Bond film the rest is gritty lino land of the 60s and well see it and tell me if it is just the buses that are nice to see.
