Pretty Powerful Control System For The Price

Pretty Powerful Control System For The Price
This could end up being a lengthy review. I have a few things to say about this system. To start, this system does not seem to have 5G capability. When trying to do the initial setup using my iPad I had to switch the iPad from me network’s 5G band to the 2.4G band. Once I did that, the setup went pretty well. And interestingly, AFTER it has been set up, it appears you can switch everything back to 5G and the Harmony Hub still is able to control everything. Still not sure why everything had to be on the 2.4G band for the initial setup. Also, as mentioned by others, the remote is not backlit. If you watch tv with some light, you can see the controls; but in a completely dark room it might be difficult to see. That said, there is a lot to like in this system. Particularly given the recent price level of under $60.Home entertainment systems can be quite complex. And no two are probably alike. So while this device worked well for me, I can at least understand why others might have had problems. My system is relatively simple. I have a tv, a blue ray dvd, an a/v receiver, a Roku streaming stick+, and a Microsoft Zune MP3 player (with a docking station). The Harmony system recognized and was able to control all of these devices. The initial setup was pretty painless (other than the 2.4G versus 5G issue already mentioned) and it was done in less than an hour. It helped that I have used Harmony products before and I am familiar with their approach and terminology. My components are all housed in a cabinet with glass doors. The tv sits on top of the cabinet. All components are IR controlled, except the Roku. I was worried about the placement of the hub, but I simply put it on top of the cabinet and it was able to control all the components (without even the need to use the included IR blaster). It might have worked just as well inside the cabinet, but I never bothered to try (why mess with success?).Understand I don’t have any gaming systems, sound bars, or other such peripherals. So your mileage may vary. But I am quite pleased with this system. I paid over $100 for an IR only universal remote in the past. This is more powerful, and 40% cheaper. Although granted the included remote does not have a backlight, or a screen with customizable commands. You can customize this remote (which I have done), but the keys are not labeled. For example, I use my Roku to listen to Pandora. However, after starting it and selecting a channel, I like to turn off (just) the TV. The power button on the remote would turn everything off. Therefore, I assigned the TVs power toggle function to one of the unused keys on the remote (the red dash). It works fine. Push it and the tv goes off. Push it again and tv goes back on. But I’m the only who knows which key does that.In the end, I gave this system 5 stars. Were I able to, I probably would have given it 4.5. It’s not perfect. But it is an excellent system, and made even more so by the $60 price. The Harmony Companion sells for around $125, and I’d be very hard pressed to imagine what it could do that this system doesn’t do. (Within the limitations of 8 devices and 6 activities inherent in this system.)

Logitech Harmony Smart Control - Black

I've been a longtime fan of Logitech Harmony remotes having owned several of them in the past. If you aren't familiar with them, Harmony remotes are programmable universal remotes sold by Logitech, that allow you to automate multiple operations like turning on TV's DVD's and other components in home entertainment systems among other things. I had a bit of time over the holidays and decided to upgrade my old Harmony 650 remote to the new Harmony Smart Control system. I even integrated the system with voice control using a Google Home Mini which is a nifty little WIFI enabled speaker that includes Google Assistant. More about that later.

The first time I tried Harmony Remotes was over 10 years ago when Harmony was not owned by Logitech and I was blown away by how cool their tech was. These guys were definitely way ahead of their time with a cloud based back end that could access IR remote configurations for every imaginable piece of equipment. You would connect your remote to a PC via USB and using the Harmony software you would tell it what devices you wanted to control. Then it would build a "firmware patch" and upgrade your remote with all the commands necessary to control your equipment. Whoever designed that system is a genius engineer!

The Harmony Smart Control is a major evolution of the original Harmony universal remotes and takes it to a new level with WIFI, Bluetooth, home automation and smart phone integration. All the configuration of the hub can now be done via your smartphone over your WIFI network by using the Harmony app. The Harmony Smart Control package includes a  Harmony Remote, a Harmony Hub which is the center of the new WIFI enabled Harmony series, and one IR Mini Blaster extender. The hub allows you to control hard to reach IR devices within closed cabinets and supports Wifi, Bluetooth, IR and RF protocols. This makes it capable of controlling several newer devices that don't use the older IR (infrared) protocol for remote control. Some examples are the Amazon Fire TV, IOT devices and home automation systems like Philips Hue lights etc.

Setting up the Harmony Hub is done using the Logitech Harmony app on Android or iOS or by using their standalone desktop app. Programming it is not necessarily the most intuitive thing in the world, but boy once set up its pretty sophisticated and can make some really cumbersome and error prone operations really simple. You first have to wire up the hub and the IR Mini Blaster, which is only needed if you have equipment hidden in a cabinet like I do. I actually was not aware that the hub itself also sends IR commands so ended up unnecessarily buying a second IR blaster (the Smart Control package comes with one extender). The hub communicates with the remote using RF and then sends out all the IR commands as well as other command protocols as needed.  The big advantage here is that once you are set up, you no longer have to worry about pointing your remote exactly at your system. The hub takes care of all the messy stuff. Genius!

Once you power on the hub, you have to launch the harmony app on your phone to connect it to your WIFI network and finish configuring the hub. Since I was a previous harmony user, all I had to do was log in to my harmony account and it imported all my configuration settings from my old Harmony 650 remote.  Woot!

I was immediately able to control my equipment without any major setup time. You literally press one button on the Harmony remote and the Harmony Hub will do all the messy work of turning on and setting up your devices. The other major advantage in this system is that your smartphones can also act as remotes, since all the buttons and commands are available when using the Harmony App on the phone. Although the provided Harmony Remote is simple with only 3 activity buttons you can set up the buttons for long press, to access other activities which is handy and actually space saving. Another thing new for me was having access to non IR devices through the hub as well. I was able to add an activity to control my Amazon Fire TV Stick which has a custom non IR remote. The hub knows how to send commands to that directly so I can use one remote for everything now!

Once I had everything set up and tested with the remote I looked into how it could be integrated with my Google Home Mini. Since the mini understands Google Assistant voice commands I wanted to see if I could get it to talk to the Harmony hub. Took a some research and googling to find out how to do this since there are no instructions in the box. Not a lot of great info available online but I found some notes from Logitech  and Google on integrating with Harmony Hub to set this up.  You will need to first install the Google Home app from the play store for this, and then ask the Google assistant to link to the harmony hub "Ok Google, ask Harmony to link my account." This creates a "card" that appears in Google Home and then sign in to your harmony account. Once you get past this non-intuitive mumbo jumbo, this will give the Google assistant access to the Harmony hub and your associated programmed activities. You can now issue voice commands to target the harmony hub, like "Ok Google, ask Harmony to turn on the TV". Since those commands can be too long to remember, fortunately you can also assign shortcuts in Google Home. You can set up shortcuts from the Settings | Shortcuts menu in the Google Home app.

Voice control of the Harmony Hub via Google Home adds a nice second layer of control to the Harmony hub which allows you to control your devices hands free without needing the remote altogether. While its may not necessarily be convenient to use voice commands, its a handy way to quickly do certain operations when the remote is not within reach. In the video I turn on the TV, then switch to the Amazon Fire TV Stick and finally turn off the TV completely using voice commands. There are all kinds of cool extensions you can do with the google home, like tell it to raise or lower the volume or even load up a specific show. In this case, using the google Home app integration, I have mapped the words "turn on TV" to my corresponding Harmony Hub activity called "Watch TV" and "Watch Fire TV"

After looking at the price of the "Harmony Ultimate", I took another look at this version of the remote. I was not sure I would wanted to live without the touch-screen on the remote. On the other hand, I have always preferred the "no look" and feedback of a simple hard button. So, the idea of this remote seemed to be the right mix of old and new. Sure, it does not have the fancy touch screen but I think Harmony realizes that the cost of custom touch-screens is just to expensive to justify for most consumers. Everyone now has one or more touch devices that can be programmed and even most high end home control systems are moving to these devices to save cost.

That being said, I think the mobile app (Android and iOS) is pretty useless and makes a poor remote control. It just does not work anywhere near as well as the button remote and is not nearly as responsive or ergonomic. The point of this product it to have one simple small, light remote that can do it all. And it nearly can. With most programmable remotes you have keep the thing pointed at the devices and some devices are just too picky (Xbox 360) and will often not respond to the IR signal. So, this device is all controlled by a radio remote that communicates with a hub that you position next to your TV/Receiver/etc. The Hub serves both as an IR and Blutooth blaster and this is where all the commands are sent. This means that not only do you not need to point at the devices, you can be in the next room and it all works. This eliminates the need for the old "help" button because it never misses a command as long as you set it up correctly. Of course setting it up correctly does take quite a bit of work depending on your devices and how well the defaults for those are set up when you download them.

But considering the number of devices out there, its amazing that there is a library of devices you just download to the system so that you don't have to program any of the IR signals. The two things you do have to do that may take some time and effort are maybe tweaking the power-on order and sometimes adding a delay. But certainly easier than setting up the Harmony One. You can also program an IR signal for your device but I have never found a device that was not already in Harmonies library which is a great time-saver.

Once things are set up correctly, I find the remote works great. It never misses a beat and it even controls the PS3. Turning everything on for one activity and then switching to another or turning everything off works perfectly. The only other remote I ever need to pick up a remote for is my TV. This is really the fault of the TVs remote capabilities but it does expose one weakness of this remote. Because my TV does not have direct up/down brightness and contrast, you need to have a full menu to do these things. And because this remote expects you to switch "Activity" when you switch the mode of the remote, your only option is to program some macros for these functions and assign them to buttons for the other activities. While this may work perfectly for many TVs that have direct up/down bright and contrast but my stupid TV remote does not. I do have macros assigned to do this on the Harmony but using my TV remote is just quicker if I need to make picture changes. To be fair, I don't see this being any better with other universal but the "Harmony One" did have a solution where you could switch to a "Device" without running an "Activity" then return. This remote seems to have no way of doing that. I tried setting up an "Activity" that did not turn on/off any devices but that did not work. This could be fixed with an upgrade to the software but even without this fix, I have still eliminated almost all use of other remotes nearly all the time.

The other main issue I had with this device was lack of any good documentation, especially for the initial setup. It seems like you need an iPhone or Android device to do the initial setup but that will only work for some mobile devices. You will want (and need) this App for later updates but for the initial setup, I found the PC Web App worked fine. But its very confusing to get the thing set up and updated. You may think you need to use the PC for all updates but once the device is connected to the local network, it all changes... You can now use the Mobile App to do subsequent updates even if you do the setup/changes on the PC Web App. In fact, you will need the PC Web app to do many of the advanced activity setup but the whole thing is confusing and you get no documentation that explains is well. This is a shame because many people will not be able to figure this mess out. Also, I am not sure why they could not get the PC Web app to be able to talk to the Hub after the initial setup. To update after that, you need to use the Mobile app or you need to plug the hub back into your PC to use that. But both are just communicating with the Hub over the local network so why they could not just give you one PC app that does it all (and better) is a bit strange. So, I use the PC App to make all activity/setup changes, but to push them to the Hub, I break out the mobile app and just hit the "Settings->Update". Kind of a pain. The initial setup and updates all need some work before this this will be usable for non-technophiles.

But if you are a bit of geek with this stuff, you can end up with pretty much the best setup ever where you have one simple remote and can put away the remote cluster sitting on multiple tables and couches around the living room.

PROS:

Remote has good physical buttons, is small and light, and feels right.
Remote can control nearly every device you own (even Blutooth).
Programability is extensive.
Hub design eliminates missed commands and you don't need to point the remote at all.
Most will not miss the screen.
A lot cheaper than the one with the screen.

CONS:

Takes some skill and time to set up correctly.
Out of box setup is confusing.
Touch App adds almost nothing.
Can run into limitation of control with certain devices.
Only 3 activies are simply button press (other 3 are press and hold which is just odd three more buttons would be so much better)

Take a while to set up, but once you do you can replace all your remotes. After getting yet another device for my home theater I decided 4 remotes was too many. This was compatible with my TV, receiver, Playstation 3, Bell Fibe TV box, NVIDIA Shield, and even a 20-year-old old VCR. The instructions on the app are pretty easy to follow, and once you get used to the different "modes" then it's smooth sailing.

I was surprised that the hub device worked without having direct line of sight to any of the devices; it must have a very powerful IR LED array to reflect off my ceiling and walls. There are a lot of settings you can tweak if you want to get it perfect, but out of the box it worked pretty well. I admit I did spend a few hours customizing everything because that's what I like to do. Keep in mind you can't customize everything from the app, and some things require you to install the PC software.

This was a great deal and if you don't need or want the "smart home" buttons the newer model adds, then this is basically the same thing. I do think the newer model has a slightly better layout for the play/pause buttons, but this remote is comfortable and works fine once you get used to it. It does take a lithium coin-cell battery, which is kind of annoying since it's not as easy to replace as AAAs but it does make for a slimmer design.

Muy buen producto. Se nota mucho más rápida la respuesta. Antes tuve un Harmony 1100 y se me hizo muy lento. Además ahora es mucha más sencilla la configuración

5.0 out of 5 stars Good but Harmony Ultimate or Elite would be a better purchase,

I had a Logitech Harmony 650 and I loved it. After using it for 2 years one button fell off. Hope this one last for few years. Very complicated to setup using a mobile but very easy to setup using a computer. The mobile app is good but a bit slow.

If you have used any of the Harmony devices with display on the remote before I would recommend you not to buy this but go for Harmony Ultimate or Elite. The main problem I found in this is when a device fail to power on or power off then it will be very tough to toggle the power as there is no display and there is no way you can select the device to control.

If you have no choice then you can overcome this by programming the buttons. Write down every scenario on a paper and take your time
programming the buttons.

There is only 1 IR blaster so make sure that you setup all your devices can receive the signal. If you have some of your devices hidden and some in the open the you will need a second blaster.
