Han d'Islande
Le premier roman de "l'enfant sublime" : Hugo n'a guère plus de vingt ans lorsqu'il l'achève, et Han d'Islande plaide la thèse de l'alliance du roi, de la jeunesse et du peuple face à l'absolutisme du mal qui tient d'abord à ce qu'on meurt de faim aux portes des palais. L'action se passe au XVIIᵉ siècle dans un royaume scandinave que terrorise un être bestial, Han, qui vit seul avec un ours et ne se nourrit que de sang humain. Un monstre, une révolte populaire, des amours contrariées qui évoquent celle de Hugo et d'Adèle Foucher, et une prison où est enfermé un ministre innocent que délivrera un chevalier à la Dürer. Han, c'est à la fois la créature de Frankenstein et la préfiguration de Quasimodo, et le roman témoigne de la fascination qu'ont exercée sur le premier romantisme les cultures nordiques, qui vivent de sang et de nuit mais qui ont aussi inventé la liberté.

"¡Oh!, ¿No conoces, entonces, a ese Han, ese bandido infernal? ¿Sabes a qué monstruo vas a perseguir? ¿Sabes que acaudilla a todas las potencias de las tinieblas? ¿Qué derriba montañas sobre las ciudades? ¿Qué su paso hace que se hundan las cavernas subterráneas? ¿Qué su soplo apaga los fanales en las rocas? ¿Y crees, Ordener, que podrás resistir a ese gigante ayudado por el demonio con tus brazos blancos y tu frágil espada?"
Hubo otro Víctor Hugo. Un Víctor Hugo que no se había consagrado aún, que recién comenzaba su brillante carrera literaria. Aquel que muchísimos años más tarde escribiría su inmortal "Los miserables" o "Nuestra señora de París", "El jorobado de Notre-Dame" y tantas novelas increíbles e inolvidables.
Antes de erigirse como uno de los referentes más importantes del Romanticismo en Francia y en el mundo. Existió otro Víctor Hugo que a sus jóvenes 21 años publicaba en 1823 su novela "Han de Islandia" y le daría el puntapié a su prolífica obra literaria.
Esta primera novela poco tiene de titubeos o incertidumbres, pues está escrita con aplomo y la sabiduría de un hombre mucho mayor y a su manera demuestra la madurez y la maestría que caracterizarían sus obras futuras ya que realmente es digno de destacar la abultada cantidad de conocimientos literarios, mitológicos e históricos que vuelca en la novela, a la que además le adosa altas dosis de acción, filosofía y suspenso y todo esto sazonado con una narrativa propia de los grandes escritores.
Si bien, la escribió en 1821, la revisó y corrigió para que se publicara dos años después no sin antes pelear con los editores. Era de entenderse, ya que pocos lo conocían y no se animaban a dar ese aventón que los editores acostumbran a mezquinar.
El resultado luego de que la leyeran fue que se maravillaron porque descubrieron algo: era como si William Shakespeare hubiera dejado de lado sus obras de teatro para escribir una novela.
"Han de Islandia" es una gran tragedia ambientada en Drontheim en 1699, en el hipotético reino de Islandia que abarca Noruega y Dinamarca. Allí, Hugo nos propone un gran juego de pasiones y traiciones, de honor, heroísmo, sublevación, poder y redención.
La historia se compone de un complejo tapiz de intrigas que involucra a reyes, virreyes, capitanes, cancilleres, obispos, soldados, campesinos y plebeyos y también a hermosas damas, obviamente enamoradas y en apuros.
Las distintas tramas, políticas, amorosas, de espionaje y de batalla se narran con gran fluidez, porque pareciera que Hugo escribe desde hace décadas y esto es verdaderamente sorprendente.
Los personajes principales destacan cada uno por sus características, pero es el caso del héroe de esta novela, el apuesto y valiente Ordener Guldenlew, barón de Thorvick y caballero de Danebrog, que además es hijo del virrey en quien se depositan todos los avatares de la trama.
Sobre el final de la novela adquiere un protagonismo total y todo gira alrededor de su figura, tironeado por distintas fuerzas, ya que está enamorado de la hermosa Ethel, hija del Schumacker, conde de Giffenfeld quien está encarcelado por el crimen de traición y conspiración de rebelión contra el Rey.
Otro personaje carismático dentro de la novela es Benignus Spiagudry, un viejo que es el encargado de la morgue y el osario del castillo del rey. Allí hay dos cadáveres que tienen participación directa en los hechos que se desarrollarán posteriormente y que además se relacionan con los personajes más importantes de esta historia.
Pero el otro gran personaje de esta novela es el que le da el nombre al libro y es Han de Islandia, el demonio de Klipstadur que además desconcierta a la atemorizada gente que oye las más horrendas cosas de él; que es un gigante que todo lo aplasta, que es un oso con cara humana, o un hombrecito cubierto de pieles que asesina y despelleja y se toma la sangre de sus víctimas en el propio cráneo de estas.
Todo el mundo vive aterrorizado, ya que todos creen que Han es una de las distintas transformaciones del diablo asesina, quema y destruye todo lo que se le cruza y nadie sabe qué hacer con él.
Durante la lectura de esta novela pude trazar muchas analogías y similitudes con otras qué leído.
Obviamente, toda la trama política de traiciones y conspiraciones me remitió a "El rey Lear", "Macbeth" y "Hamlet" de William Shakespeare. Todas esas situaciones tan bien creadas y dispuestas en el argumento son verdaderamente brillantes.
Por otro lado, hay un pasaje en la novela que tiene que ver con un viaje que emprenden Ordener y el viejo Benignus Spiagudry, especialmente por las conversaciones, que me hizo recordar en cierto modo a "Don Quijote de la Mancha" y muy especialmente a "Jacques el fatalista" de Diderot.
Y respecto del sangriento enfrentamiento entre los soldados del rey y los mineros sublevados me llevaron directamente a la escena central al asedio del castillo de los normandos en "Ivanhoe" de Sir Walter Scott, por la vertiginosa sucesión de escenas y la realista descripción de las batallas.
Existió un Víctor Hugo joven pero no inexperto que logró debutar en la literatura con aplomo y brillantez y que con "Han de Islandia" logro darse a conocer al mundo con la misma grandeza que lo cubrió de gloria el día que ese mismo mundo se rindió a sus pies con "Los miserables".
Y solo los grandes como él pueden lograr eso.

Inesperadamente, gostei bastante de ler esta história de aventuras, escrita por um muito jovem Victor Hugo.
Gostei especialmente da caracterização dos personagens - e são muitos!
A história parece quase destinada a ser representada, fazendo lembrar uma peça de Shakespeare, com confusões de identidade, diversas intrigas e extensos diálogos, por vezes com algum humor.
Acho que será interessante ler as obras de Victor Hugo segundo a ordem cronológica, vou tentar!

The story almost seems meant to be enacted, making me think of a Shakespeare play, with mistaken identities, several machinations and long dialogues, with some touches of humor.
I think it should be interesting to read the works of Victor Hugo in chronological order, I'll try to do that.

Le premier roman de Victor Hugo, écrit quand il avait tout juste une vingtaine d’années, ne manque sans doute pas de panache ni d’ambition. Ses personnages sont haut en couleur, mais le récit ne m’a pas emporté, notamment en raison d’un style trop théâtral, avec des dialogues grandiloquents et des quiproquos qui m’ont plus fait rire que convaincu dans une œuvre romanesque.
Je vais tout de même poursuivre ma lecture ou relecture des œuvres du grand Victor Hugo, sachant par avance que j’y rencontrerai des romans et des pièces où son talent sera pleinement démontré.

Even though this is Hugo's first novel - written in his early twenties -, I could recognize some of his features. His strong fascination and fight for justice shimmers through very clearly. The villain may be a blood thirsty monster, but at least, in contrary to the nobleman conspirators, he is sincere and that makes me sympathize with him in a way.
The story is full of cunning and ambush by the leaders of Norway in the late 17th century, spicked with desperate romance - so it also did remind me of Dumas's adventures.

سبق فى تعليقى على أعمال هيجو أن قلت أن أحداث الرواية لدى هيجو هى أكثر تعقيدا من شخصياته - وهذا لا يتعارض مع كونه يضع شخصياته بوضوح - فنجده يغرق فى تشابك الأحداث ويتمسك بوحدة التأثيرات تلك التأثيرات الخفية التى لا تدركها العقول مباشرة أو هى لا تدركها على الإطلاق فأغلب الأحداث والشخصيات يؤثر كل منها فى الآخر . كما لا تخلو هذه الوحدة من المفارقات التى تنطوى على مغزى عميق فيرى القارىء المتوحد مع العمل افكار الكاتب مجسدة فى شخصيات وأحداث الرواية كالشر والكراهية فى شخص وأفعال هان الايسلندى و سخرية القدر فيما جرى لموسديمون وأخوه الجلاد و الحب الخالص والذى هو تضحية لدى أوردينر وإيتيل و الخلاص او العون والنجاة المفاجئين لدى شوماكير وأوردينر وكذلك العقاب الغير متوقع لدى موسديمون ودالفيلد كما يرى جنون الجماهير فى تجمعها وهوسها . ونرى مخادعة الظواهر لفهم الإنسان المحدود وإعتقاده وغروره بحقيقته المزيفة , وهذا هو الفخ الذى لا يسلم منه اى من البشر وكذلك كل أبطال أعمال هيجو وهى كلها مفارقات واقعية صالحة لتأمل البسطاء والفلاسفة على حد سواء كما ان مجرى أحداثها لا يقل متعة كذلك .
والى جانب عبقرية هيجو الأدبية فإنه دائما ما يحب إستثمار ثقافته التاريخية والسياسية فى أعماله الأدبية . فهذا العمل ذو خلفية تاريخية حيث تجرى أحداثه فى الدانيمارك المتحدة او المحتلة للنرويج أواخر القرن السابع عشر أيام الملك كريستيان الرابع كما لا يخلو الحوار من دلالات وإسقاطات سياسية وفلسفية اما السخرية فدائما ما تنتشر فى سائر أرجاء العمل وهناك دائما شخصية ساخرة من الواقع الى جانب السخريات المتقطعه لدى كل انسان .

Robert Bly once said of a poem by Wallace Stevens that "it was as bad a poem as it is possible for a genius to write." I thought of that when reading this book. After Les Miserables and Notre Dame de Paris, it's hard to imagine that this work flowed from the same pen. There are flashes of the human insight and profound pathos that characterises the other two books, but they are few and far between. On the whole, this one book of Victor Hugo's is deservedly ignored.
I suppose that it does have the virtue of showing just how remarkable the other two works are, and how a writer can mature. This was his first novel, written when he was only 24.

Bien des gens trouveront qu'il agissait follement; mais les âmes jeunes font ce qu'elles croient juste par instinct et non par calcul; et d'ailleurs, dans ce monde où la prudence est si aride et la sagesse si ironique qui nie que la générosité soit folie ?

Eh bah j'ai franchement bien aimé! Ce n'est pas un coup de coeur car je trouve que le récit manque un peu de "profondeur" dans les dénonciations sociales qu'Hugo sait faire par exemple. On sent que c'est là mais ce n'est pas assez poussé et je m'attendais à un récit encore plus sombre. En revanche ça reste un très bon récit qui me fait un peu penser au Le Comte de Monte-Cristo - tome 1 dans la narration et dans l'intrigue du récit avec l'ambiance.
C'est un roman assez sombre mais qui a un côté très romanesque, un peu théâtral même, donc finalement le ressenti n'est pas aussi fort qu'avec Notre-Dame de Paris par exemple.
La fin m'a même un peu surprise de la part d'Hugo.
C'est vraiment un roman qui se lit vite avec une histoire très romanesque, dans une ambiance très particulière et qui colle très bien au récit.
On voit par-ci par-là des bribes du futur Hugo (ce roman a été écrit à ses 18 ans) avec notamment les apostrophes, quelques (très légères) digressions et un sens du dramatique assez poussé. Donc en tant que tel c'est vachement sympa à lire et je pense que c'est une bonne porte d'entrée à ses oeuvres puisqu'on voit l'esquisse de son style littéraire si particulier.
Je pense poursuivre mes romans annuels d'Hugo avec Les Travailleurs de la mer... la liste se réduit :( il ne m'en reste plus que trois, dont un roman, une nouvelle et une pavasse que je me réserve pour la fin :p

A real page turner in the end
This book turned out to be quite a surprise. I read it in the original French for my book club. At first I found the book rather dry with a lot of tedious and seemingly unnecessary description. Victor Hugo is quite wordy, but I find that to be a trend among many 19th century authors. However as the book progressed it got more interesting. I really enjoyed the second half of the book and the last 10% with the tribunal was a real page Turner. It had almost as many twists and turns as a telenovela. The ending was really over the top and I would suspect that many of soap opera has used these tropes. So in the end I really enjoyed the book and I'm going to recommend that my book club put it on the reading list for next year.

What a great read!
I remember reading "Hunchback from Notre Dame" and giving up from boredom after 52nd page of scenery descriptions...
Now given I was 15, so maybe not the best age to read a classic like that but I has spoiled Victor Hugo for me since then.
Now 2 decades later I find I enjoy Hugo immensely. First Bug Yargal and Now Hans of Iceland. Brilliant.
You don't often get to call a classic work "page turner". Well, this was. And I loved it.
Maybe now I'm ready for "Hunchback" Take2?
Definitely give this book a try. This might be the easiest way to get a start with reading classic authors.
Plus Hans himself is just....awesome!

I remember reading "Hunchback from Notre Dame" and giving up from boredom after 52nd page of scenery descriptions...
Now given I was 15, so maybe not the best age to read a classic like that but I has spoiled Victor Hugo for me since then.
Now 2 decades later I find I enjoy Hugo immensely. First Bug Yargal and Now Hans of Iceland. Brilliant.
You don't often get to call a classic work "page turner". Well, this was. And I loved it.
Maybe now I'm ready for "Hunchback" Take2?
Definitely give this book a try. This might be the easiest way to get a start with reading classic authors.
Plus Hans himself is just....awesome!

Hugo's first novel shows scant traces of the brilliance to come but it's a ripping tale of adventure and intrigue with a monstrous villain, the author's first monster, though hardly a sympathetic one. Many of the chapters are made up almost entirely of conversations, which makes me wonder if the novel was not originally conceived as a play. The reliance of several plot points on stagey, Shakespearian mistakes about the identity of characters reinforces that notion. There is also a strong note of humor, as though Hugo could not quite take his own melodrama seriously. All-in-all, a good Gothic adventure and worthwhile reading for anyone interested in the roots of genius.

J'ai trouvé ce livre pas mal ennuyant. C'est une des premières oeuvres de Victor Hugoet je peux dire que son style n'était pas encore au point. Par moment, il y a des flashs de son génie mais en général c'est pas très bon. J'ai parfois eu beaucoup de difficulté à suivre l'histoire. Dans le positif, je dois dire que j'ai vraiment aimé le personnage de Han D'Islande. J'ai rarement vu un personnage aussi sanguinaire dans des romans de cette époque. Je ne recommande pas ce livre à mois d'être un très grand fan de Victor Hugo.

"Have you ever devoured the entrails of a living child?" - Hans is a bit of a rough customer...and delightfully so. Pure evil with no playing about. Fairly obvious that this is an early effort by Hugo with its herky jerky beginnings, but the genius still leaps forth. From the hero Ordener's departure in search of Hans, this novel is excellent. The fact that this was published when he was 21....what a titan.

I really liked this book gory and large on the page. It reminded me of Shakespeare and Norse fairy tales I used to read as a child. I had never before heard of this novel of Victor Hugo, but really enjoyed it.

A two star read until I started imagining the five star picture Guy Maddin could make out of it. Hans himself is great: "I just drank your son's blood out of my son's skull!" And he wins a 3 way fight with a wolf and a bear. So there's that. Way to go, teenage Hugo!

Если в начале Гюго пытается захватыватить интерес читателя необычными персонажами и атмосферой Скандинавии, что у него в целом получается тоже неплохо, то ко второй половине он постепенно начинает раскручивать Чеховский пулемёт часть патронов к которому он заряжал незаметно для читателя в начале истории а часть продолжает заряжать уже во время стрельбы
И если после первой пары-тройки выстрелов ещё может показаться что это просто многозарядное ружьё то приближаясь к концу читателю только остаётся поражаться количеству выстрелов которые даже не думают прекращаться вплоть до финала, и это великолепно
Возвращаясь к персонажам отдельно хочется отметить Гана, наблюдать за этим ницшеанским сверхчеловеком, в худшем смысле, было невероятно интересно
Из минусов могу отметить пожалуй отсутствие каких-то интересных смыслов собственно и тяжеловесный слог Гюго, к которому однако довольно быстро привыкаешь
Но, если честно, та канонада которую он устроил заглушила для меня оба этих недостатка.

"Hans of Iceland" by Victor-Marie Hugo
Victor Hugo's first but obscure novel "Hans of Iceland" is an adventure that takes place in Norway, and partly in Iceland, that explores and chronicles the criminal spree of the title character Hans of Iceland, as he wreck havocs the lives of many of the characters of the novel.
MY THOUGHTS:
I decided to give this story 3 stars because some parts were just boring! I forgot the name of our main character and the main antagonist already is the title of this novel. I feel like Victor Hugo himself didn't have a great time reading this novel because he himself felt that this novel would be a boring read, thus him turning to poetry instead.
This novel is the gothic type of novel, because many of the scenes of this novel take place in caves, much where Hans of Iceland hides in.
Anyway, Victor Hugo is one of my favorite writers, but this novel is boring to read, I was reading F. Sionil Jose and other Philippine history books while reading this book, those books were still better to read than this.

Totalne zaskoczenie :) Moja pierwsza przygoda z Victorem Hugo i XIX wiecznym nurtem frenetycznym.
Typowo gotycka, miejscami mroczna i brutalna historia infantylnej miłości Ordenera i Ethel z historią Danii i Norwegii w tle.
Najbardziej podobała mi się postać Hana z Islandii :) małego szatana z ostrymi pazurami, który pragnie ludzkiej krwi, przyjaźni się z białym niedźwiedziem a do tego jest chytry, bystry i niezwykle przewrotny. Han - jego buta i przebiegłość - bije na głowę dworskie intrygi.
Świetnie opisane postaci. Mamy kochanków, niesłusznie skazanego kanclerza, intrygantów dworskich, kata, strażnika umarłych, biskupów, rybaków, górali i wojaków. Świetne dialogi i zwroty akcji. No i typowy gotyk :)

Victor Hugo's first novel (1823) and it's absolutely awful. The best thing about it for me was picturing the earnest 20 year old producing it -- did he know he'd one day be considered a genius? It reminded me of reading the dreadful romances Louisa May Alcott wrote before Little Women. Even great writers need to learn how to write.

Two works by Hugo on the Kobo: Hans of Iceland is the longer one written as an epic/fantasy style Nordic tale and The Last Day of a Condemned Man a anti-death penalty themed short story. I enjoyed them both.

Some of it seemed sophomoric and some of it seemed to have some actual weight. The middle parts of the book could have been cut down a good bit and Hans himself seemed more caricature than character.

Scattered, delayed reactions:
My second experience reading Victor Hugo. Considering that my first experience was with an English translation of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"--I stopped at page 99 and the plot still hadn't begun--I was surprised at the lack of description, but also pleased that I enjoyed it.
Once I got through the first few chapters, I found the novel to be a quick enough read. The plot advances almost as directly as an adventure/quest film, and because the narration follows many of the characters separately, the reader is in a "privileged" position to see the action develop from all angles, which makes the ending exceptionally neat. (Too neat?).
Although the characters are defined by a single trait/motivation, they were well-crafted to validate the story. Perhaps, Huge chose medieval Denmark as the novel setting for it's "primitive" culture where the characters could be simple (pure--and in contrast to French society?).
The title character, Han, is a wild, devilish, literally blood-thirsty hermit, who takes pleasure in terrorizing the region...and is also driven by a single philosophy: his purpose is to torment humans, evil in their own way. However, Han does face some internal conflict when he faces the death of his son (and his lineage), and his previous abandonment of his birthright by integrating himself in society. Despite all of his actions, Han, like the noble hero, is a creature of principle, and thus remains sympathetic. (To me, at least).
Actually, this novel superficially reminds me of "Hamlet" because of the setting, the prince, the supernatural presence of Han, and the question of suicide brought up at the very opening of the novel, which is re-posed again at the end of the novel as a question of sacrifice. Ordener is ready to sacrifice himself in order to help the father of the woman he loves despite his (false) political status as an enemy and traitor. Ethel is also willing to sacrifice her life and freedom for love.
More generally, death is omnipresent throughout this novel, whether it be in battle during a misled rebellion, a cursed encounter with Han, or as a political punishment at the hand of the enthusiastic executioner. So, what is the value of a human life and why does a life have value? The novel doesn't offer an obvious answer.

Primeiro romance do autor, publicado em 1823 e escrito quando ele tinha 18 anos. Talvez isso justifique a mediocridade da obra, principalmente se pareada a seus outros títulos.
A ação se passa em 1699 na Islândia e é uma história de amor entre Ethel e o nobre Gundeldew. A moça está presa junto ao pai por uma acusação injusta de traição ao rei, plano elaborado pelo pai do rapaz com o objetivo de usurpar o posto de Schumaker, o pai da moça.
Antes de ler imaginei que Han fosse algum tipo de nobre, mas é uma espécie de assassino sanguinário que mal parece humano e tem ódio a toda a humanidade por ter perdido o filho, sendo movido por uma insaciável sede de vingança.
Romântico em excesso, com cenas de violência que chegam a ser grotescas, trama absurda cheia de resoluções absurdas. Não dá pra reconhecer Victor Hugo nessa obra, mesmo assim fico feliz em ter a oportunidade de conhecer mais um romance de um autor tão admirado.
