Biography
Prince Gustav was born in The Hague, where his parents lived in exile after his father was defeated at the Battle of the White Mountains and deposed from the thrones of both Bohemia and the Palatinate. He was named after King Gustav Adolphus of Sweden, a close friend of his parents. His paternal grandparents were Frederick IV and Louise Juliana of Nassau, and his maternal grandparents were James VI and I and Anne of Denmark. His father, a Calvinist, died on November 29, 1632, when Gustav was a baby. Gustav died of epilepsy on January 9, 1641 at the age of eight.
