The old US Embassy in Grosvenor Square is completely demolished apart from the original cladding frame. Even the great American eagle that sat on top of the building has gone, so too has the statue of Ronald Reagan which was only unveiled in 2011.
Grosvenor Estate, which is redeveloping the old embassy building is consulting on the future of the Square, which still has American links with the statue of Theodore Roosevelt and monuments to the those who died in the Eagle Squadron in the Second World War and to British citizens who died in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The planned refresh is to be welcomed as the Square feels a little tired at the moment.
Hopefully Ronald and the eagle will return in the future plans.....

This is a lovely green suave in a very pleasant part of London.
The park is primarily grass, offering excellent picnic opportunities, although there are aren’t installations and trees offering pleasant shaded areas.

Lovely large garden square in the heart of Mayfair. It is apparently the centrepiece of the Duke of Westminster property. Flanked by beautiful residences.

Nice park that close to everything (hyde park, green park, regents park, picadilly, regent street, etc.). I stay at a hotel in this central area, and once per day walked through this small but beautiful green space, with a few walking paths, and some very nice memorials. The nicest memorial to me was the September 11th piece; thoughtfully built with nice engravings and a public place to recognize and remember the horrid event in a tasteful manner.

Grosvenor Square is Mayfair’s largest square and is the focal point of the Duke of Westminster’s property empire in London. It has been built up initially with residential
properties from the early 18th century onwards. The gardens in the centre were for the exclusive use of the property owners. In recent times it has become a public park albeit increasingly filled with US statuary only recently being dismantled. Between 1938-60 Macdonald House on the north side housed the US Embassy before it moved to newly built premises on the west side in 1960. But now the US Embassy has moved to Nine Elms that building is being gutted before its reinvention as a Qatari-owned hotel. And not only has the Ronald Reagan statue been removed from outside the former Embassy but that of Roosevelt is currently under wraps. All that remains of the US influence is the Eagle Squadrons memorial and the 9/11 Memorial. The former is a sculpture of an American Eagle atop a tall plinth commemorating (mainly) US pilots who fought against Nazi Germany before Pearl Harbour. It was designed by Elisabeth Frink and unveiled in 1985. The latter is a garden in front of a columned hut commemorating the victims of the 9/11 atrocity in New York. Will that be removed soon to a Trump swamp in front of the Nine Elms Embassy I wonder? As for MacDonald House part of which recently housed Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Grill but this too is now completely under wraps whether pending refurbishment or demolition I know not. But at the moment much of Grosvenor Square and its gardens are a mess.

Over the years, we have walked on all sides of Grosvenor Square, mostly heading to one restaurant, or another. This Spring trip found us IN the Square, and for the first time. We were headed out from Claridge’s to The Dorchester, and took the time to actually enter, and spend time in Grosvenor Square. Maybe it was the lovely Spring day, as we had spent time in Berkeley Square Gardens, just a few hours before, or maybe it was just curiosity, having passed the Square so very, very many times. Regardless, we spent about an hour, exploring the Square.
Located, in the heart of Mayfair, Grosvenor Square is quite large, and has lovely landscaping. It was still a bit early for all of the plantings to be blooming – actual Spring was coming late to London.
I was a bit surprised at how much there was, within the Square. Yes, I had seen it, and usually across Brook St on the North, or Upper Grosvenor St to the South. Often, we cut through on the west side of the Square, in front of the USA Embassy, and then on the east, heading between Duke and Carlos Streets. I guess that I had just never bothered to look at the Square, in any detail.
On this day, we sat near the September 11 Memorial Gardens, and I explored that pavilion a bit. Then we walked to the center, and to the FDR (Roosevelt) and Eisenhower statues. Remember, the USA Embassy was across the walkway, so adjacent to this park.
I had never noticed all that was contained here, so it was as though I had never seen Grosvenor Square before.
Lovely, and quite (compared to Berkeley Square Gardens), I will return, and hopefully see all of the flowers in full bloom.

A large square in a quiet neighborhood. Surrounded by residential homes and the former American Embassy. It has benches, statues ( Reagan, Eisenhower, Roosevelt and a bold eagle) as well as the memorial garden dedicated to September 11. If you are in the area and the weather is cooperating, its a nice, quiet garden to sit and read. Or if you have little kids and are looking for a place to have them run around, this is a good option.
