Difficult business record reviewing. It's so easy to be distracted by external influences and rate an album because of them. Not that this exercise was ever meant to be objective. After all, I did shell out good money for everything in the collection so, technically, they all should attract high marks but, as with life in general, disappointment is a constant companion. So it was with trepidation that I put Greetings From The Gutter in the CD player as, apart from the singles "Heart Of Stone" and "Jealousy", I can't remember hearing this in its entirety since I bought it. And so, on a lovely summer's morning, I underwent what I'm sure can be likened to a religious conversion.
This is a good album. No, let me qualify that - this is a great album. Throughout Stewart veers between impressions of Lou Reed and Bowie during his scary monster phase, taking the opportunity to showcase his guitar playing talent which was sorely restricted when with the Eurythmics. His lyrics are psychedelic-retro but the music retains his pop sensibilities and it's a crying shame that this was released as Britpop was hogging the musical limelight. Even so, it probably still wouldn't have shipped units. What worries me now is will this have the same effect on me if I play it in the rain? But, if I'm right about external influences, maybe if I listen to Celine Dion facedown in a bath of cold custard I'll come to like her - not!
