Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dennis Pavao's song "I Kona" speak of a place called Kona, specifically its opua, or clouds, and the peace that they bring. The singer expresses a sense of unity with this place, stating that there is no one comparable to the warmth that Kona brings. The second verse explains that the singer and their companions are strangers to Kona, but they have come with a request for love. The bridge of the song reveals that the message being conveyed is sacred and important, and that there is no one else like the person being addressed.

The lyrics of "I Kona" are poignant and evoke a strong sense of connection to the land and its beauty. The use of the term "opua" to describe the clouds is significant, as it is a term that is unique to Hawaii and highlights the importance of the natural environment to the island culture. The song is ultimately about the power of love and the hope that it can bring, even to strangers in an unfamiliar place.

So sad that our musicians/singers passed at a very young age: Pavao 50; Iz 38; Kamakahi 61; John Koko 51; Martin Pahinui 65; Pua Alameda 53; Kui Lee 34; Sonny Chillingworth 62; Alfred Apaka 41; Gabby 59; Sonny Waiau 40; Roland Cazimero 66; and there were more who have contributed to being Hawaii's gifted singers/musicians and sharing their Love of Music for Hawaii and abroad. Some have lived well beyond 70's and 80's and into their 90's. We cannot question as to why they were taken from us but maybe there was a reason for their passing. I bid them Aloha in Heaven Above. Mahalo nui loa.
