I'm a fan of non-realist Knox so had some difficulty knowing how to read this period piece/detective story/biography of the author's father. But once I got into it I found the novel fascinating and ultimately very moving, as most of authors books are.

Wellington in the 1940s, the "invasion" of American troops. And also Knox's father Ray. Principal theme - how people change with time, and do you remain the same person? Very good, plus fun to read a story with streets you recognise.

Identity and change, losing and finding love in and around Wellington in the 40s; this is a multiperspectival kaleidoscope, smartly written.
