Giuseppe Rinaldi: Winemaking Traditions & Philosophy

Giuseppe-Rinaldi-barolo.jpg

The Giuseppe Rinaldi winery was founded by Guiseppe Rinaldi in 1890 in the Barolo sub-region of Piedmont.

In 1947, Guiseppe’s son, Battista Rinaldi, took over the winery, and in 1992, Beppe Rinaldi continued the family’s work.

Beppe Rinaldi admired the past generations of Italian winemakers. This inspired him to adhere to strict traditional winemaking techniques like:

  • Blending: The wines are Barolo blends from several sites rather than single-vineyard bottles. Even the cru wines are often laced with non-cru fruit to enhance their complexity and richness.
  • Fermentation: The prolonged fermentation process (about a month) happens in traditional wooden vats with no temperature control. At the end of the fermentation process, the wines are punched down and remain on the grape skins for about 30 days.
  • Aging: The wines are aged in old oak barrels for three and a half years.

These unconventional techniques brought the estate into conflict with the production guidelines of the Barolo Consortium.

The estate is now run by Beppe’s wife Alessia and daughters Marta (specializing in cellar work) and Carlotta (vineyards) who continue the Giuseppe Rinaldi winemaking traditions.
