Filmmaker Jason Reitman said that the new film will tie directly into the original movie from 1984. The new characters are a family made up of Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Grace. The mother inherits a farm from a father she didn't know. The family finds that this farm in a small Oklahoma town is littered with world-saving, ghostbusting equipment.
“As the family arrives at an old farm, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters,” Reitman said. “Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they’re ready to pick up the proton pack themselves.”This brings some light to the minute-long teaser trailer from January that featured the Ecto-1 hidden under a tarp in a barn. A photo in the Vanity Fair article shows the Ecto-1 in a field. It's Wolfhard's character that gets it going again, according to the caption on the image.
As Wolfhard's character works on the car, Grace's character is observing the ruins of a mine where she noticed something strange going on.
Rudd's character is a summer school teacher named Mr. Grooberson. His character is a Ghostbusters fanatic and is shown in a picture holding one of the traps.
Reitman (Juno) is directing from a script by himself and Gil Kenan (director of 2015's Poltergeist). Ivan Reitman, Jason Reitman's father and the director of the first two Ghostbusters movies, is producing. Reitman's frequent cinematographer Eric Steelberg (Dolemite is My Name) is re-teaming with the director.
Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts are all confirmed to return. For more on Ghostbusters, check out what Aykroyd thought of the film's script and see an image from the last day of principal photography.
