That time I think I feel like everything is so beautiful and fits together so well from the image that Katie chose on the slides, to the songs, to the words God has given us this morning. I invite you to open up to to the book of Acts. If you've got your Bible, if you brought it, there's some at the back if you want one or you can read along on the screens behind me. Um, this is one of those scriptures that there's a whole lot going on behind the scenes. So I always encourage folks to have your Bible there beside you so you can refer back to it. Make sure, you know, fact check, make sure I'm telling the truth. Um, I want to read from Acts chapter eight verses 26 through forty and this comes the the story of Acts is the story of how the church begins. and so Jesus is crucified. He's resurrected. He spends 40 days on the Earth. Uh hearing to his disciples and others. And and then he ascends into heaven. They have 10 days where they go oh my goodness. Now what? And then the Holy Spirit comes upon them at Pentecost. And they start this great ministry and the ministry grows. And this is just before Paul is called to become a great apostle. Listen to this Acts 826 it says, now an angel of the lord said to Philip, go south to the road, the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. Yes, it's the that Gaza. So, we started out and on his way, he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake which means queen of the Ethiopians. Man had gone to Jerusalem to worship And on his way home, he was sitting in his chariot, reading the book of Isaiah, the prophet. The spirit told Philip, go to that chariot and stay near it. Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. Do you understand what you're reading? Philip asked. How can I? He said. Unless somebody explains it to me. So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. This is the passage of scripture the eunuch was reading from Isaiah. He was led like a sheep to the slaughter. And as a lamb before its shearer is silent so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation, he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth. The eunuch asked Philip, tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about? Is he talking about himself or someone else? Then began with that very passage of scripture and told him the good news about Jesus As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized? And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then, both Phillip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the spirit of the lord suddenly took Philip away and the eunuch see him again but went on his way rejoicing. Philip, however, appeared at Azotus about 30 miles away and traveled about preaching the good news in all the towns until he reached Caesarea. Would you pray with me inform me? Oh god, come to us. Speak to us. Help us to hear you and to know you. God, use me. I give myself to you and ask for your spirit to blow through me that we could all hear your voice. God, we know that you want to call us and send us and so do that work, that good work now. We prepare ourselves and ask for you to breathe your breath over us. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen So y'all have you ever wished that you could hear God's voice? Like god just just tell me what I'm supposed to do and I will do it. Has anybody here ever felt that way? God, just speak. Let me know where I'm supposed to go, what I'm supposed to do. Anybody else ever felt that way? I I personally have never heard an audibly detectable divine voice but when I was 27 years old, my heart felt certain that I was called by god to go and learn and in a black church And so I left a thriving youth ministry job where I ministered to anywhere from about 35 to 50 kids every week and I left that great church where I had a great history, great people supporting me and I I moved up to Boston, Massachusetts And I went into the inner city neighborhood there and I went down the street. I went into every single black church along that street and I said, hi, my name is Sean. And if you have the budget and wanted to take a chance on a young white kid from Oklahoma that you've never ever met, here I am. I'm your guy. Well, I didn't get a job. I had to take that great expensive master of divinity degree back to waiting tables. And I had some serious frustration. I I had some big questions for god like, god, what are we doing? I thought this was the plan. What is happening? But one year to the day, one year to the day, from that day that I left the church in McKinney, Texas and moved. A black Methodist congregation offered me a position. While the job description said requirement, African Methodist Episcopal Ordained Pastor, not me. I said, okay god. But have you, have you ever wished you could hear god's voice? You could know that I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. I'm in the place where I'm supposed to be. Well, this scripture describes two men who are listening and searching for god. The first is Philip. Now, in Acts chapter six, if you backed up a couple chapters, you'd start to read about Philip. Philip was ordained as one of these seven men that are ordained as deacons. They're ordained to help serve the widows, the Greek ones who are not receiving food. So, essentially, Philip is a glorified, holy spirit-filled food service worker. But then persecution breaks out against the church and everybody is forced to flee from Jerusalem. Everybody except for the apostles leaves and so Philip runs away. He goes up to Samaria. Y'all remember, Samaritans, those hated, despised Samaritans. That's where he goes. And Philip starts this great ministry. He starts performing miracles and people start to follow and get to know god through his ministry there. He he has the biggest church is growing. The the Holy Spirit is moving. It's active and great things are happening. He has the successful and that is going great and then suddenly, the Holy Spirit, an angel of the lord shows up and he says, Philip, I want you to leave it all Leave all these people you've been ministering among and go down to the desert road towards Gaza. Now, the word in scripture there that your translation probably says, south is actually a combination of two Greek words. They mean south and noon. In other words, what the spirit is trying to say is is telling him, go south along the desolate, desert road at 12 o'clock noon. And y'all, it's hot in South Israel. Oh, but it's a dry heat. Well, yeah, because it's the desert. I I wonder y'all, I wonder if Philip thought, God, what in the world? What are we doing? Like, there's nobody's going to be down there. I've this great thing. I've got things, I've memes, I gotta be at, people I can minister to, you're sending me here where nobody's going to be, but Phillip goes, and in this most unlikely place, at the most unlikely time, Philip meets the most unlikely person. Y'all, you you probably have a greater chance of winning the lottery than meeting a man like this. Number one, he is an Ethiopian. Ethiopia was down south of Egypt and at this time in Greco, Roman culture, Ethiopia represented the ends of the earth, quite literally. This man is a wealthy, powerful, exotic, black man from the ends of the earth but secondly, secondly, this man is somehow familiar with the Jewish religion At a time in history when when the Jews didn't do evangelism at a time in history when when Jews didn't try to help others with the good news about god's love for all people. This man has somehow become a believer and a follower of the god of Israel. Now, perhaps, you people say, why, how, how did this happen? Perhaps, maybe it happened when the queen of Sheba came to visit King Solomon. Perhaps somebody in her entourage became a believer in this god of Israel and passed that faith on to his children and and his children's children and and through the generations but y'all, that visit was 900 years before this. That is 900 plus years. Oodles of generations to to pass down a faith in a foreign land where you are a religious minority and to continue to say this is what I believe and hold on to. So, first is Ethiopian. Second of all, he is somehow a god follower. Third of all, not only is he a believer but this man also possesses a copy of the Hebrew Bible. At a time when people people could not read. At a time when almost nobody outside of the synagogue owned a copy of scripture, this man possesses a copy at least of the prophet, Isaiah. And fourth, this man just happens to be on this desolate desert road at noon. Because he's just traveled over a month long journey, one way. In a chariot, to worship at god's temple in Jerusalem. Now, take a minute just to think about the gravity of that. It's for, for, to make that kind of pilgrimage to to make that kind of commitment, to go that far. I feel like you have to have some kind of burning question, some kind of burning desire. God, I'm looking for something. I'm going to go on this journey to hopefully meet with you, to discover you, to find you in this place. This man has gone all the way to Jerus all the way to the holy temple, the place where they believe the presence of god dwelled. He he went there because this was the special place where people felt like god's presence was and yet, when Philip meets this man, after he's been to the temple and he's on his way back home, when Philip meets him, he seems a little bit frustrated. I can't understand this stuff. I've been looking for god but I don't have anybody to help me. The intonation of somebody who went looking for god in the most likely of places and feels like he's still returning home empty. He's leaving Jerusalem still confused with with those still unanswered prayers in life. Have you ever felt like you like you prayed and you went to church and you said, god, help me. God, answer my prayer. God, say something. Hoping for an encounter with the spirit but Nada. Heard nothing. Felt nothing Have you ever felt disappointed When God didn't seem to show up for you. You felt like you were in that dark night of the soul and it seemed like you were all by yourself. This eunuch follows God's spirit. But he doesn't receive his gift in the temple. He doesn't receive his gift in the church in worship. He doesn't receive his gift at the climax of this holy pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He receives the gift of God's presence in the most unlikely of places Out along the road. While he's driving home. In the desert at noon when some crazy random guy runs up to his chariot and starts a conversation with him. My wife would say that is Shawn Wallace. This Ethiopian eunuch probably felt like god himself had showed up to him in the flesh Especially after Philip is miraculously whisked away. and the confirmation is this that that there's suddenly water along the road. Enough water to be baptized in. It's it's like God suddenly created this pool of water in the middle of the desert so we can have a baptist tree. Hey, y'all. Let me, let me try to land this sermon as beautifully as Phillip lands 30 miles away in his Otis. The real message here is how God's spirit moves. The mysterious ways of God and and the obedience to listen for and follow that good spirit. This Ethiopian eunuch is is following God's call, following that spirit, hoping to to have an encounter and and even though he doesn't feel all the time like God is listening. Like God is present. Even though it doesn't seem like God is responding to him. Even though he's feeling spiritually drier than the desert he's in. Even though he's hotter with God than ever. Even in the wilderness and those desert places. God still has a plan. God is still working things out even when we forgotten, even when we thought that ship had sailed, that time was past. God is still doing it. After all, the wilderness, the wilderness is where the Israelites were prepared for god's promised land and if god showed up for them in the wilderness, god will show up for you in the wilderness too. And and for those folks like Philip, who feel god's call to place don't seem to make any logical sense. God's call to go to those lonely, desert places, to speak to strangers in McDonald's, to to share words of hope Follow that spirit's call. Because there are people just like this eunuch. People around you and me who are all alone. Who are hurting even when we can't see it. People who need help. People who need that good news about God's love. That yes you. I see you and you are loved. You are good. You are received. There are people who are hurting and struggling and Wanting to know God so desperately in their spirit And God's will is to carry the gospel. The good news. To the ends of the earth. That's what Jesus says right before he ascends at the end of the book of Matthew. Go and carry this to the ends of the earth. For all people to know, to be loved, To be whole. And sometimes when God doesn't call us to the ends of the earth. God calls the the earth to us. Would you pray with me? Oh god, we pray for that Pentecost outpouring of your spirit. Oh god, guide us not only so that we could feel good about ourselves but guide us to be what you created us to be. For we know that we find joy in serving joy in being who we were made to be. God, we pray that you would use us to heal this world for those who are hurting and lonely, for those who need something and can't even name what it is. God, send us We pray for those who are hurt. God, may your presence be with them. That they can hold on just a little longer. Even when they feel that disappointment of not finding you when they thought they would. You're still at work. That you're still coming. Will be there right on TV. God, we pray for you to be our right on time God. In the name of Jesus, all of us If you have anything on your heart today that you'd like prayer about. Grab us or just play We have a few moments just to sit and from God. Be able to respond and speak that God here I am. So, I encourage you to spend some time in prayer. If you like a prayer partner If you'd like to join this church, this is your opportunity Let's all go to God. If you have been you have been so so I will of the you have been so so I will of the of the goodness I will of the goodness of god And now we come to our time at this table. Jesus table, not ours. On the night that he was betrayed, Jesus took bread and broke it. He was gathered there with his disciples. His chosen family When he broke it, he said, this is my body. Given for you. Then he took the cup and he said, this is my blood. The new covenant that I have developed for you. Do this in remembrance of me. This is our chance to come together with our chosen family These people in this room are family. I invite you to spend a little bit of time and and they come to the table I ask you not to just stand and look over your bread but to look at the other people who are there They are your family. They rely on you to give them support and love. And the word. And you can also give it to them. So, come to the table when we have a group here. I will lead us in the taking of the bread and the cup and then you can return to your choice Holy Christ. Dearest heavenly father, we thank you so much for this morning your spirit is here We all felt it from the moment that we came in this room. The music, the word the friendly faces, the love, We ask you to be with us this week for us to take what we've gotten here and to take it out with us into the world that need you so desperately. For in your holy name we pray. Take a daily breath. At the table Hey, Philip. At the there's a place just just for you able there's a place just for there's a place as a an act of worship, we can help each other to know here's God, that God is still here, and so if you have seen God, maybe you have exactly what somebody else needs to hear today, to have that faith of a mustard seed to continue on. So I ask the question, what have you seen God recently in your life or in the life of somebody near you or has a microphone, so all I could hear, we'll all say, praise the Lord together to give thanks to God for God's movement. So, is anybody recognize God? Yes. I, I'm first position since I have the mic. So, now, I think and I've said stuff similar to this before but every week coming here, and just, you know, we mentioned family, of this church and stuff, just seeing how supported Brie and I are, and stuff here, as we're both preparing for leading worship, and then leading worship, and we have one child sprinting around the thing and another who needs to be fed or needs to be rocked or anything like that. I mean, I am just over the last couple of weeks, I can't count the number of people who have, you know, held Rowan or played with Taylor or you know, moms, dads, older kids, everything like that and just the fact, you know, I've been in lots of different churches and lots of different worship services and I mean, especially some more recent ones that I've been in Sunday morning is is a big production. You know, everything is really intentional and everything is really produced. You know, it's it's a concert almost, you know? Um and I just the fact that here we can feel the spirit of God, and that, I mean, maybe some of y'all get annoyed with the kids running, the logo running around or something like that, but no one's expressed it up until this point, and the fact that we can have those little interruptions, the fact that we can have a random drummer, and, all, all kinds of things like that, just means so much more here and even if it means, you know, I might get a little bit off on a harmony or something while I'm up on stage for a second. Um I I just, I feel the spirit so much more in the fact that we have the family here, that, that everybody can come just as they are, whether they're three weeks old or 100 years old, you know, and so that's really awesome. So, thank you, Reid. The whole church said. Right. Praise the Lord. Amen. Maiden, you have one? Where have you seen God Maiden? I saw it with Ariana Uh Nora, and then Aria for playing around with Taylor for a little bit. Mm hmm. Lots of people who love one others and we all have something to give and something to receive. So, and god's in that. The whole church said. Praise the lord. Praise the lord. Amen. Yes, Jeanette. Jean, I'll just do it really loud. No, people online can't hear you if you don't have a mic. Yes. Um I have the, are you, I know you should know I don't have a car so I have this buggy that I push around. I want to do shopping and stuff and I was at Dollar Tree and I got this little sign I made on it that said, remember, whose you are and whom you serve and this total strange woman who I don't know can walk after me and she said, darling, that's just what I needed to hear today. Thank you. And that made me like, wow, because nobody talks to me. But thank you. Annette, you have a ministry like nobody else and so I thank God for every single person that sees God in you because you minister in ways that that nobody else does. The whole church said, praise God. Praise the Lord. Amen. Okay. Well, this is my sister in Christ, Courtney, And She hasn't been here a couple of weeks and it's been difficult And so this week, I prayed for her that she would be here today. And even today was difficult. However, she's here and I just feel like that god answered my prayer. Amen. Amen. The whole church said, praise the lord. Amen. Okay, last one. Go ahead, Mikey. The way that Matias can always bring humor wherever the heck he goes. Like today he was talking about his worm. Yeah, you know, we talk about, sometimes we feel like we're supposed to be serious and everything, but God's also in laughter. God has a sense of humor, and so when we laugh, the the spirit of God is there as well. So, I thank God for those who bring laughter. The whole church said. Praise the lord. Praise the Lord. Amen. Offering We have a basket here if you want to bring your offering upfront. If you're a visitor today, please bring your green card up and place it in the basket. There are lots of other ways that you can give. You can send a check to the office. You can drop a check by the office. You can go online and give. We even have text to text to give. So, yes, we still do. Um but don't just leave it to money. We need your body. We need your spirit. Do jobs here at church. We have all kinds of things that need to be done. I am so emotional today. Like we need people who are going to work the tech. If you come to early service and you want to be a tech worker, or you want to sing? Yes? By the Okay. So, there are all kinds of opportunities for you to give here at church, not just monetarily. So, don't let that, don't let not having money to give handicap you Because you have much more than money. You are much more than money to ask. Um so, now we're going to get joyful and we're going to sing this song and you're going to bring your offering and then I'll pray over it once we're done. Y'all staying with us you call me out of the grave you call me into the light you call my name and in my heart came alive your love is greater your love is your love awakens awakens awakens me your love is greater your love is stronger your love awakens awakens awakens me your love is greater your love is stronger your love awakens awakens awakens me your love is greater your love is your love awakens awakens awakens me your love is greater your love awakens awakens awakens me your love is your love is awakens awakens awakens me. Let's pray over these gifts. Dear heavenly father, we thank you so much for all that you have given us. And now we give back to you. Through these offerings, through our gifts of of loving and caring, and kindness. We thank you for everything you've given and we are so glad that you have blessed us with this wonderful place. For it's in your holy name we pray. Amen. Amen. Amen. Be seated for just one second. I want to share a few things, few announcements, fun opportunities for you. First of all, I hope you invite a friend. Um, I know that god is moving in this place and I know that there are others that each of us know that could need a little love and a little community, a little family. So, invite someone to come with you next week. Uh today, we are starting the Koinonia Bible Study is starting a brand-new walk through the Bible and so if you've ever wondered like how Abraham connects to Moses connects to Gideon and all that stuff and within under a year, we will walk through the whole Bible. I'm going to connect all those stories and so if you want to, if you're interested in that, you can get in on the ground floor. We're talking creation fall and all that today. Um it's right down right through this door, right down this way in the Koinonia classroom. Uh we'd love to have you join us. Uh all ages are welcome. Uh and then next Sunday is youth Sunday. So we have some kids that are going to be leading us in worship. I'm still going to bring a sermon and everything but the kids are going to lead a lot of the worship and so I hope you'll be here. Um not only to be blessed because you will be, you will hear and see God in some ways you didn't think. Um but also these kids need your encouragement love, to grow into who god is calling them to be. So, I hope you'll be here and be extra loud and bring your presence to encourage them and to support their growth in their spiritual walk and then right after after the 11 o'clock service, next Sunday, we're going to have lunch. It's Cinco the Mayo. So, we're going to have some tacos and some fun together. So, lunch and worship next Sunday. It'll be a great day and that is that lunch is it's if you want to make a donation, all the donations go towards the youth mission trip. Again, to help these kids to grow and to serve and to to find God where they are. Uh last thing I have, Mandel Samuels, chair of our search team. Our other pastor is going to come and share an update. So, man to the floor is yours. Hello, thank you pastor Shawn. This is the latest update from the committee and I'm hoping to embarrass a couple of people today. So, the final review of a congregational profile that we've been speaking about. At our meeting today, we meet on most Sundays. We'll be finalizing that profile. Then, that profile will be sent to the regional office this week. Along with the job position. That will officially open the position. This past week, the committee we started doing cursory reviews of candidates who already have their information in the regional's Office Data Bank. And we'll discuss some of those potential candidates today to see which ones that we want to move forward with and do further review or consideration of. We're in the final weeks of editing the video about the church and the Northwest Arkansas area that interest the candidates will be able to view online. Uh the video will contain interviews with members of our congregations, pictures of the church, information about the church. The committee would like to thank Kristen Page for conducting the interviews and for the following families for agreeing to be interviewed. Clay and Shannon Bacher, Jermaine Brown, John and Misty Burton, Irma Flores, Lopez, Dennis and Christine Pinkley, Courtney Ra and we also would like to thank EJ Hoganbotham who is our new social media coordinator. He's working with us on the video. So, thank you to the congregation for your continued prayers and support. Amen. Thank you. So, grab somebody's form of a circle around the sanctuary and we'll share a blessing as we go from this time together. Amen. As you go out from this space, let the service begin. Go from this place and may the spirit of god be upon you. Whispering into your heart, calling you to maybe strangers, to people who are hurting, who need what you have. Go and be faithful to that call. Be Phillip and share the good news, the hope, the joy, the love, the forgiveness, and the grace with all that you meet. In the name of the father, the son, and the spirit, and all of god's people said, amen. Hey, Hog people's neck before you get out the door. Made
