The following contains spoilers for Web of Spider-Man #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The Spider-Verse's next team of unlikely heroes includes at least one current villain.

Web of Spider-Man #1 opens to Julia Carpenter, better known as Madame Web, explaining that some grave new calamity is about to befall the Multiverse. Though she cannot tell what the threat is quite yet, she does know that there are at least a few Spider-Totems who are currently walking a fine line between hero and villain, and it is up to them which side of that line they end up on. While the likes of Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Norman Osborn are certainly involved, there are a handful of more intriguing figures with parts to play in these proceedings as well, including Ben Reilly, Kane Parker, and the Spider-Man of 2099 himself, Miguel O'Hara.

First seen in the form of one of the Jackal's unnamed Spider-Clones back in 1975's Amazing Spider-Man #149 by writer Gerry Conway and artist Ross Andru, Ben Reilly spent the better part of 20 years existing off-page before making his return to the pages of Marvel Comics. Despite seemingly sacrificing himself in heroic fashion all those years ago, Ben's return marked a whole new era in Spider-Man's long-running and much-maligned Clone Saga. While Ben has taken on a variety of heroic mantles since then, his recent experiences as the Beyond Corporation's corporate-sponsored Spider-Man directly led to his downfall and subsequent return as the villainous Chasm.

Another Jackal-produced clone of Peter Parker, Kaine Parker made his debut in the pages of 1994's Web of Spider-Man #119 by writer Terry Kavanagh and artist Steven Butler. As the first of the Jackal's attempts to clone Spider-Man, Kaine was prone to a dangerous degenerative process that ate away at his mind and body. Kept alive to be used by the Jackal as a test subject, Kaine's initial outings in the pages of Marvel Comics saw him play the role of the villain. Although Kaine has had a particularly complicated life in the comics, he ultimately came around to taking up Ben's old mantle of the Scarlet Spider and joining his fellow heroes in saving the world on more than one occasion.

1992's Spider-Man 2099 #1 by writer Peter David and artist Rick Leonardi marked Miguel O'Hara's official introduction to the pages of Marvel Comics, as well as that of the futuristic world of Earth-928. After nearly three decades spent slinging webs as the Spider-Man of 2099, Miguel was given something of a fresh start with 2019's 2099 Alpha #1 by writer Nick Spencer and artist Victor Bogdanović. While the former set the stage for the future of 2099 as a whole, the latter unified the then fractured 2099 timeline, streamlining multiple branching stories under a single Multiversal roof.

Spider-Man

Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics' most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man's most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character's lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O'Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.

Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he's changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
