Biography

European Aristocracy
Lady Harriet Howard was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.
Harriet (Howard) Leveson-Gower is a member of Clan Sutherland.

Lady Harriet Elizabeth Georgiana Howard, the third daughter and fifth child of George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle, and his wife, Lady Georgiana Dorothy Cavendish was born 21 May 1806.[1]

She married 28 May 1823 by special licence at Devonshire House, Piccadilly, London, George Granville Leveson-Gower, at that time styled Earl Gower. He succeeded his father as 2nd Duke of Sutherland in 1833, and his mother as 20th Earl of Sutherland in 1839, changing his name to Sutherland-Leveson-Gower by Royal Licence 12 May 1841.[2]

They had eleven children;[3]

  1. Lady Elizabeth Georgiana, born 30 May 1824;
  2. Lady Evelyn, born 8 August 1825;
  3. Lady Caroline, born 15 April 1827;
  4. George Granville William, born 19 December 1828, succeeded as 3rd Duke of Sutherland, etc;
  5. Lady Blanche Julia, born 26 June 1830, died young 24 February 1832;
  6. Lord Frederick George, born 11 November 1832, Lieutenant Coldstream Guards, died in the Crimea 6 October 1854;
  7. Lady Constance Gertrude, born 16 June 1834;
  8. Lady Victoria, born 16 May 1838, died young 19 June 1839;
  9. Lord Albert, born 21 November 1843;
  10. Lord Ronald Charles, born 2 August 1845;
  11. Lady Alexandrina, born 3 February 1848, died young 21 June 1849.

She held the position of Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria from 1837-1841, 1846-1852, 1853-1858 and 1859-1861. As part of this role, she organised the Queens female household, drawing up schedules for the various Ladies in waiting and Maids of Honour [4]During the last period in this position, she was the sole companion of the Queen at Windsor during the first weeks after the death of Albert, Prince Consort.
